This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady

 What I Built

Students don't struggle to read one notice. They struggle to tell what each one means, who it is for, and what is due first.

CampusLens is an AI college notice assistant. You give it a college circular or an event poster, and it reads it for you and pulls out what matters: what the notice says, what you need to do, and the deadlines. I built it with hosted Gemma 4, an open-weight model.

 The Lazy Payoff

Colleges send circulars, posters and deadline reminders as photos, PDFs and long messages, and the important detail is usually buried in the middle. Instead of reading every one line by line, you upload the notice and CampusLens gives you the key points. Reading is the chore it takes off your plate.

 Demo

Try it live: https://campuslens-portal.vercel.app/

 Code

GitHub: https://github.com/SAI-RAKSHITH7/campuslens

 How I Built It

Gemma does the reading. Gemma 4 reads the notice (text or image) and extracts the summary, tasks and deadlines.

Code does the exact work. Anything that must be precise, like dates, is handled in code rather than left to the model.

Frontend deployed on Vercel. The model call is kept in one place, so the model can be swapped by changing configuration rather than rewriting the app.

 Why Open Innovation Matters

Gemma's open weights are what make this approach practical. I can swap the model or the provider without redesigning the app, and I can choose the model that fits the job. College notices are semi-private data, and open weights mean a college could self-host CampusLens so its notices never leave its own servers.

To be upfront: this build uses a hosted Gemma 4, so I'm not claiming it runs offline today.

 Limits

Accuracy depends on how clear the photo or document is.

It runs on a hosted model, so free-tier limits and downtime can affect it.

I haven't tested it with many students yet.

 Prize Category

Best Use of Gemma: Gemma 4 reads each college notice and extracts the key points, tasks and deadlines.
