Returns Are Retail's Messiest Job. Otto Just Handed It to AI Robots

Everyone who has ever sold anything online knows the secret shame of e-commerce: the returns. A shirt comes back crumpled into the wrong bag. A shoe box holds one shoe. Nothing is folded, nothing is labelled, and nothing is where the system expects it to be. It is the exact corner of retail where automation goes to die, and that is precisely why today's announcement from Otto Group and robotics software company Sereact caught my eye.

The plan runs in two phases. First, ten AI-controlled dual-arm robot systems go to work at Otto Group's logistics centre in Poland, inspecting and sorting returned customer orders. If the early results hold up, fifteen more robotic arms follow, taking the fleet to twenty-five, and Otto will weigh a broader rollout across its whole logistics network. These are real robots on a real returns line, not a trade-show demo behind glass.

The brain of the operation is Cortex, Sereact's physical AI model, and its party trick is the one returns actually demand: it generalises. Traditional warehouse automation only works when every product is known in advance and presented the same way every time. Returns offer neither. Cortex is built to handle objects it has never encountered before, deciding in real time how to grasp each item, judge its condition and route it to the right place. Anyone who has watched a human returns worker size up a mystery parcel in two seconds flat will understand how hard that judgment is to teach a machine.

The learning loop behind it is, to my mind, the real story. Cortex is trained and validated on NVIDIA's physical AI stack. Real picks from the returns line are turned into thousands of simulated variants with NVIDIA Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab, then re-rendered across different garment states, packaging, materials and lighting using NVIDIA Cosmos world foundation models. New skills are post-trained on NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and tested against held-out cases before they ever reach the robots. So when a robot fumbles an item on Monday, the fix can arrive as a tested update within days instead of weeks. That is a software release cycle wearing a robot's body, and it changes the economics of the whole machine.

Two honest caveats before anyone declares the warehouse solved. First, ten systems is a pilot, not a takeover, and returns are chaos by definition; the second phase only happens if the first one proves itself. Second, the jobs picture here is more reshuffle than replacement. The robots run under a Robotics-as-a-Service model, with Sereact operating and maintaining them, while Otto's employees hand over the repetitive grasping and lifting and move into supervision, exception handling and quality checks. In plain words: the robots take the parcels nobody can predict, and the humans keep the judgment calls. That split sounds about right to me.

I will be watching for the phase two results, because they will tell us something bigger than one retailer's warehouse. If AI can learn the messiest, least predictable job in e-commerce, the list of jobs we assumed were safe from automation gets a lot shorter. The returns desk was supposed to be where robots fail. This week, it became where they clock in.

Google's Genie 4 Builds Worlds You Can Step Into, and Now They Talk Back

Every video I make follows the same honest routine: I generate a short clip, the audience watches it, and that is the end of the road. Nobody can step inside it. Nobody can ask the character a question and hear an answer. That is why Google DeepMind's announcement of Genie 4 this week stopped me mid-scroll. This is not another video generator. It is a world model, a system that builds a place you can move through in real time, and for the first time, that place has a voice of its own.

Let me explain the difference, because it matters. A normal AI video model renders a clip and finishes. A world model simulates an environment as you explore it, predicting what you will see, hear and bump into next. DeepMind says Genie 4 is natively multimodal, which means the music, the ambient noise and even spoken dialogue are generated together with the world itself, not pasted on afterwards. You set an event in motion, and the model simulates how the world responds, how it sounds, and how the people in it move, react and speak.

The part that excites me most is the steering. While a simulation is running, you can type a prompt and change the scene on the fly: shift the weather, move the camera, drop in a new person or object. DeepMind says a scene can now stay consistent for up to two minutes, double the limit of Genie 3, with better physics and more humanlike characters. Under the hood, the Gemini family does the directing. Gemini Omni anchors the simulations in real-world appearance and behaviour, while other Gemini models supply the reasoning that keeps a scene coherent, more like a director planning steps and checking frames while the world renders around you.

DeepMind is aiming this at serious work, not just play. The company talks about safe, endlessly variable simulations for training robots and AI agents, and about unlocking entirely new interactive experiences. The timing tells its own story. Runway released its second world model, GWM Worlds 2, a couple of months ago. Fei-Fei Li's World Labs is being acquired by AMD, and Amazon is reported to be in talks to buy Decart. When the giants start buying the mapmakers, you know the territory is valuable.

Now the honest limits, because this blog does not sell dreams. Genie 4 is a research preview for trusted testers only. The wider rollout comes later, starting with Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie and early access partners on the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, and there is a waitlist if you want in. Even DeepMind admits the details in a generated world can still shift and drift over time. I cannot open it tonight and build tomorrow's cartoon inside it, and neither can you.

But I know which way the river is flowing. My craft today is stitching eight-second clips together and hoping the story survives. A world that holds together for two minutes, with characters who converse while you walk through it, is a glimpse of stories you do not just watch but inhabit. When this opens up, the winners will be the storytellers who were ready. I intend to be one of them.
