Struggling with Forms in HTML...

This one was difficult.

Whilst I’m sure this may be trivial for more experienced coders, and perhaps it’s easier in CSS or JS, my head could not wrap around how to code a form correctly.

I understand the individual aspects of it such as selecting which type, using ‘for’ to associate a label to a input type. But I just found it rather clunky to create and really tedious.

Maybe it is just me but who knows. This has been my first main struggle coding HTML. Thus, I would like to dedicate some time this week building my knowledge on forms and actually getting the hang of it.

 Progress

189/214 Steps Complete : HTML

I only have accessibility and the quiz left now and then I can move onto CSS. My goal of finishing HTML by the end of the week is now almost a certain haha.

I’m excited to get to CSS as from my limited knowledge on it, it’s a way to make webpages more hospitable and get a bit of personalisation in there. Which will be cool.

 Aims for the Week:

Complete HTML and get a start on CSS

Create a dummy form website

What was your first experience with HTML forms? If you’re enjoying my journey leave a like! It really helps me out :)

Semantic HTML? Completed it Mate

 Today’s Progress

Finished with Semantic HTML

Created a fake “Event Hub” built with sections, articles, images and a navigation section

Moved onto Forms and Tables in HTML

I knew when I woke up this morning I wanted to complete the semantic HTML section in freecodecamp.org, and I did it!

I didn’t have much to go, however this was the section that I previously gave up on at the beginning of the summer, hence being significant that I got past my previous struggles.

Looking forward, I want to create something out of freecodecamp. What that is entirely I am not sure, given my rather novice skill level it will probably just be a dummy website. But, the act of making it all from scratch will be very rewarding. Thus, I need to brainstorm a topic to do the website on, something interesting.

A thought for another day perhaps.

 Overall Progress

130/214 through HTML code camp

A small number, but I have set myself the goal of completing HTML by the end of next week.

Writing a blog is something I have never attempted before, so keeping up with it will be a testament to how much I keep up with my coding progress. I’m hoping that they both influence each other in a weird way (if you get me).

Lectures start up again next week for my course. I’m hoping that the motivation to code stays with me and doesn’t falter as university continues, but time will tell.

Enjoying the journey? Interested in Coding yourself? Well follow along and we can learn to code together!

My Coding Journey - The Beginning

Today is the day I finally decided to start. I finally decided I wanted to learn how to code.

On a bleak September morning in my modest 3rd year accommodation, I have no idea if I’ll succeed or even get anywhere with this. But I believe giving it a go and possible failing is better than sitting on it and passively waiting for something to happen.

But why? This is a question I ask myself all the time whenever this idea came to mind. I’ve always liked the idea of coding, it seems oddly therapeutic to me how you can create something out of (basically) nothing; where you can get to the point that any problem you have could be solved, or eased, with just the power of coding.

I could just be really naïve and not know what I am about to embark on, but I am excited to get started.

To assist me on my journey I am going to be using the help of freecodecamp.org, and I will be going through their “Certified Full Stack Developer Curriculum”.

 What I Learnt Today

Overall refreshed myself on some coding basics (I dabbled a little at the beginning of the summer)

Created a heart using SVG

Created a fake cat blog, with clickable phone number and email address

Learnt about semantic code: Blockquote, U, S; Ruby elements

Below is the code for a little red heart!

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8" />
<title>Heart Icon</title>
</head>
<body>
<svg width="24" height="24" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="red">
<path
d="M12 21s-6-4.35-9.33-8.22C-.5 7.39 3.24 1 8.4 4.28 10.08 5.32 12 7.5 12 7.5s1.92-2.18 3.6-3.22C20.76 1 24.5 7.39 21.33 12.78 18 16.65 12 21 12 21z"
></path>
</svg>

 Where I aim to go with this

I don’t expect to become an absolute genius at coding anytime soon, I’ve still got my final year of uni to crawl through after all.

However, in six months I’d like to be able to confidently make my own websites and have at least 1 live project.

Being able to call myself a full-stack developer will be extremely rewarding and a skill that I hope can transfer to other aspects of my life.

In 12 months my goal is to be making £200+ per month from coding, whether that be from apps, templates or freelancing.

A dream of mine would be to keep up with this blog and create an awesome community who, through my journey, can learn to code and help each other.

💡

I hope you enjoyed my first blog post! Follow me on my journey, experience the ups and downs of coding and maybe, just maybe, you’ll learn something too!
What was your Day 1 like?
