How I saved over ₹50,000 in taxes as a freelance dev using Section 44ADA (and templates that helped me do it)

Freelancing in software development sounds like the ultimate dream:

Work from anywhere 🌴
Choose your own projects 💻
Set your own rates 💰
But for developers in India, the reality often looks like this:

A client requests "just one small change" for the 15th time.
You deliver the code, and the client suddenly goes ghost.
You get your payment but realize 10% was deducted, and you have no idea how to file your taxes.
You realize you are charging ₹500/hour but spending half your time on unpaid admin work.
I've been there. Most Indian developers start freelancing with great coding skills but zero business systems.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to protect yourself, price your work correctly, and handle Indian taxes (GST/TDS) like a professional.

Stop Doing Unpaid Requirements Gathering (Use a Questionnaire)
When a client says: "I want an e-commerce website, how much will it cost?"

If you jump on a call and spend 2 hours discussing it without any commitment, you are losing money.

The Fix: Before scheduling a call, send them a structured Project Intake Questionnaire. Ask about:

Business model and target audience.
Tech stack preferences & required integrations (Stripe, Twilio, WhatsApp API).
Brand assets and Figma designs (Do they have them, or do you need to design too?).
Budget range & expected timeline.
If a client refuses to fill out a 10-minute form, they aren't serious about hiring you.

Eliminate "Scope Creep" with a Scope Document
"Scope Creep" is when a client keeps adding features without paying extra. It kills developer profit margins.

The Fix: Always draft a Project Scope Document before signing a contract. It must have two clear sections:

Included in Scope: Detailed feature list (e.g., "User login via Google, 3 database models, responsive UI").
EXPLICITLY OUT OF SCOPE: Things you will NOT do (e.g., "Logo design, copywriting, free server maintenance post-launch").
Include a Change Request (CR) clause: "Any feature requested outside Section 1 will be billed at an additional hourly rate of ₹X and will extend the deadline by Y days."

The "India-Ready" Freelance Contract
Do not copy-paste standard US templates. Indian courts and tax rules are different. Your contract needs to specifically handle:

TDS Section 194J: Registered Indian companies will deduct 10% TDS from your invoice. Your contract must state they must provide Form 16A (TDS Certificate) so you can claim that money back during ITR filing.
Intellectual Property (IP) Transfer: The source code belongs to you until the final payment is cleared.
Late Payment Penalty: A clause charging 2% per month interest on overdue payments. This magically makes clients pay on time.

Taxes & Presumptive Taxation (Section 44ADA)
Here is a tax trick most Indian freelancers don't know: Section 44ADA.

If your gross freelance revenue is under ₹75 lakhs a year, the government allows you to declare only 50% of your income as profit. You only pay tax on that 50%!

If you make ₹10 Lakhs a year.
Instead of showing complex business expenses, you declare ₹5 Lakhs as profit.
You pay income tax only on ₹5 Lakhs. Under the new tax regime, your effective tax is almost ₹0!

Automated GST Invoices
In India, you must register for GST once your annual turnover exceeds ₹20 Lakhs (for services).

If you and the client are in the same state: Charge 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
If in different states: Charge 18% IGST.
Export of services (US/EU clients): 0% GST (requires an LUT form).
Always include the SAC Code: 998314 (Information technology design and development services) on your invoice.

🎁 Need a Shortcut? Download the Freelance Dev Starter Kit
If you want to skip building these documents from scratch, I have packaged my personal business templates into a ready-to-use kit:

Download the Freelance Dev Starter Kit ($24 / ~₹2,000)

It includes:

📋 Client Onboarding Questionnaire (.md)
📝 Project Scope Document (.md)
⚖️ India-Ready Contract Template (.md)
🧾 Automated GST Invoice Generator (HTML)
💰 Interactive Hourly & Project Rate Calculator (HTML)
📖 Comprehensive Setup & Tax Guide (PDF)
It costs less than one hour of your development time, but it will save you lakhs in unpaid scope creep and tax mistakes.

How do you handle scope creep with your freelance clients? Let's discuss in the comments! 👇

I Made 5 GitHub Profile README Templates (Free + Paid Pack)

Your GitHub profile README is the first thing recruiters and collaborators see.

Yet most developers either:

Have no README at all 😅

Copy-paste a basic template that looks like everyone else's

I spent time creating 5 different README styles for different developer personalities. And I'm sharing them here!

 Why Your GitHub Profile Matters

Think of your GitHub profile as your developer resume. When a recruiter or open-source maintainer visits your GitHub:

They spend less than 10 seconds deciding if you're interesting

A great README = instant credibility

A blank profile = missed opportunity

 The 5 Templates I Made

 1. 🎯 Minimal Clean

Best for: Job seekers, senior developers

Vibe: Professional, no distractions, clean layout

## Features:
- Clean badges for tech stack
- GitHub stats widget
- Featured projects table
- Social links

 2. 🎨 Colorful & Animated

Best for: Creative developers, frontend devs

Vibe: Vibrant, animated typing text, GIFs

## Features:
- Typing animation (readme-typing-svg)
- Animated GIF
- Code block "About Me" section
- Colorful badges
- GitHub trophies

 3. 📊 Stats Heavy

Best for: Data-driven developers, open source contributors

Vibe: Numbers, graphs, WakaTime coding time

## Features:
- WakaTime weekly coding breakdown
- GitHub activity graph
- Streak stats
- Achievements/certifications table

 4. 💻 Dark Terminal Style

Best for: Backend devs, systems programmers

Vibe: Everything looks like a terminal command

## Features:
- $ whoami JSON output
- $ ls skills/ with progress bars
- $ cat projects.json
- $ ping me --ports for social links

 5. ✍️ Simple Story-Based

Best for: Developer-bloggers, writers

Vibe: Narrative, human, personal

## Features:
- First-person storytelling style
- Blog post auto-integration
- Minimal but warm
- Focus on who you are, not just what you build

How to Use Any of These Templates

Go to GitHub → Create a new repo with same name as your username

Create a
README.md
file

Paste the template

Replace all
[placeholders]
with your info

Replace
yourusername
with your GitHub username

Commit → Done! ✅

Free Tools Used in These Templates

Tool

What it does

GitHub README Stats

Shows your GitHub statistics
