How to Type German Umlauts (ä, ö, ü, ß) on Any Keyboard

If you have ever needed to write in German on an English keyboard, you know the problem: the letters ä, ö, ü, and ß are nowhere to be found. You end up writing "fuer" instead of "für" and hoping nobody minds.

Every major operating system already has a way to type these characters. Here is each method, platform by platform, plus a printable cheat sheet at the end.

 Windows

Alt codes (fastest if you have a number pad). Hold Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on:

ä = Alt + 0228, ö = Alt + 0246, ü = Alt + 0252

Ä = Alt + 0196, Ö = Alt + 0214, Ü = Alt + 0220

ß = Alt + 0223

US-International keyboard layout. Add it under Settings, then type
"
followed by a, o, or u to get ä, ö, ü. Right Alt + S gives you ß. The tradeoff: the quote key becomes a "dead key," so typing
"
followed by space gives you a plain quote.

Emoji and symbols panel. Press Win + . (Windows key plus period), switch to the Symbols tab, and you will find every umlaut there. Slow, but it always works.

 Mac

Option shortcuts. Press Option + U, release, then type the vowel: you get ä, ö, or ü. Add Shift for capitals (Ä, Ö, Ü). Option + S gives you ß directly.

Long-press. Hold down a, o, u, or s and a small popup shows the accented variants. Press the number under the one you want, or click it.

 iPhone and iPad

Long-press the letter: hold a for ä, o for ö, u for ü, s for ß. Slide your finger to the character and release. You can also add a full German keyboard under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard, then switch with the globe icon.

 Android

Same idea: long-press a, o, u, or s on Gboard or your keyboard app and the umlaut variants appear. For heavy German typing, add German as a language in your keyboard settings and switch layouts with the spacebar or globe key.

 Chromebook

Press Ctrl + Shift + U, then type the Unicode code and press Enter: 00e4 (ä), 00f6 (ö), 00fc (ü), 00df (ß). Capitals: 00c4, 00d6, 00dc.

 Linux

Set a Compose key in your keyboard settings (Right Alt is a popular choice). Then Compose followed by
"
and a vowel gives you the umlaut; Compose followed by s twice gives you ß.

 In Microsoft Word and Google Docs

Word has its own shortcuts that work regardless of your system layout: Ctrl + Shift + : (colon), release, then type the vowel for ä, ö, ü. For ß: Ctrl + Shift + &, then s. Capitals work the same way with Shift held on the vowel.

Google Docs: go to Insert > Special characters, search "latin" in the symbol picker, and click the character you need. It is slower, but it works on any machine with no setup.

 For developers: HTML entities and Unicode

If you are writing HTML and want to be safe with encodings, use named entities:

ä
ä
· ö
ö
· ü
ü

Ä
Ä
· Ö
Ö
· Ü
Ü

ß
ß

The Unicode code points, useful in code and on Chromebooks:

ä U+00E4 · ö U+00F6 · ü U+00FC · ß U+00DF

Ä U+00C4 · Ö U+00D6 · Ü U+00DC

In LaTeX,
\"a
,
\"o
,
\"u
produce ä, ö, ü, and
\ss{}
gives you ß.

 Troubleshooting

"Alt codes do nothing on my laptop." Most laptops have no numeric keypad. Either use the on-screen keyboard (Win + Ctrl + O, then its Options key enables a numpad), switch to the US-International layout, or open Character Map (
charmap.exe
) and copy from there.

"Alt codes type the wrong character." Two usual causes: Num Lock is off, or you typed the digits on the top row instead of the keypad. Alt codes only work from the numeric keypad.

"My quote key stopped working after adding US-International." That is the dead key behavior. Press
"
then space to get a plain quote, or
"
then a vowel for the umlaut. If it drives you mad, remove the layout again.

"Long-press on Mac shows nothing." The press-and-hold accent menu can be disabled by some Terminal tweaks or enterprise profiles. The Option + U shortcut always works as a fallback.

 The lazy option

If you only need a character once and do not want to memorize anything, a click-to-copy tool is the fastest route. I keep one bookmarked: Umlaut Letters puts all six characters on one page, click to copy, with the shortcut tables above it for reference.

Learn one method for the device you use most and the problem disappears. The Mac Option shortcuts and the phone long-press are the two worth memorizing first, since they work everywhere with zero setup.
