Planning events can often feel stressful, chaotic, and hard to budget. Whether you are organizing a corporate team-building event, a children's birthday party, or an outdoor wedding, keeping track of guest counts, item inventories, and expenses usually ends up in a messy, overwhelming spreadsheet. 📉❌

Why Build CymbalMart?

Traditional event planners force users to manually hunt for items, calculate bulk quantities, and manually adjust expenses row-by-row when things change. I wanted to design an application that acts like a proactive co-pilot—taking natural language prompts, instantly structuring inventories, mapping items to store aisles, and recalculating the total budget dynamically.

To solve this, I built the CymbalMart Shopping Agent 🤖✨—an intelligent, interactive party planning and shopping assistant designed to convert event requirements into curated, budget-conscious shopping lists with real-time adjustments and voice integration. 💡🛒

To build a fast, responsive, and intelligent agent interface, I utilized a modern, robust tech stack engineered for high performance and smooth client-side reactivity.

🧩 Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Building an agentic shopping assistant from scratch came with unique design hurdles. Here is how I tackled them:

When users interact with the CymbalMart Assistant to alter guest quantities (e.g., jumping from 20 to 50 guests), updating every dependent recipe ingredient and store aisle subtotal simultaneously could cause UI stutter. To fix this, I implemented optimized React state hooks that batch updates and memoize expensive lookup arrays using custom calculation helpers.

If we want to build tech that actually matters—whether it's user-facing tools, accessibility-driven software, or robust business automation—we need to look at development through three entirely different lenses. 🔍✨

🧭 1. 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕴𝖘𝖊𝖗 𝕻𝖘𝖞𝖈𝖍𝖔𝖑𝖔𝖌𝖞 𝕻𝖊𝖗𝖘𝖕𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖛𝖊: 𝕰𝖒𝖕𝖆𝖙𝖍𝖞 𝕴𝖘 𝕮𝖔𝖉𝖊 🧠🫂

As developers, we often build for ourselves—people who love reading messy logs, parsing JSON manually, and staring at terminal text. But real users? They want friction-free experiences.

📉 The Trap: Designing an AI tool that gives a 400-word block of raw text with zero visual hierarchy.
📈 The Shift: Think like an applied psychologist or a UX designer. How does the user feel when they click that "Generate" button? Are they stressed, rushed, or curious?
🛠️ The Fix: Add contextual micro-interactions, clear error states, and friendly feedback. If your AI agent is taking 5 seconds to think, make sure your UI tells a story while they wait! ⏳✨

Handling prompt engineering reliability while keeping the UI snappy and responsive required some careful state management. Making sure the AI returned structured data that populated the sheet cleanly—without breaking the layout when descriptions got extra verbose—was a fun puzzle to solve.

From Prompt to Deployed App: Building "Mythic Forge" with Google AI Studio

This post is my submission for DEV Education Track: Build Apps with Google AI Studio.

What I Built

For my first project using Google AI Studio's new "Build apps with Gemini" feature, I set out to build Mythic Forge, an interactive web application that acts as an RPG Character Portrait and Backstory Generator.

To create it, I used a structured natural language prompt specifying React, TypeScript, Gemini for deep narrative generation, and character stat allocation:

"Please create a modern web application in TypeScript and React that acts as an RPG Character Portrait and Backstory Generator. The app should include an interactive form for character classes, Gemini integration for immersive backstories and stats, a responsive dashboard layout, and a button to copy or export the character sheet."

The app successfully generated a complete, beautifully structured frontend project featuring dynamic attribute rollers, character classes, narrative chronicles, and party management capabilities.

My Experience

Working through this track was an eye-opening introduction to rapid prototyping with AI. As someone exploring web development and AI workflows, a few key things stood out to me:

Self-Healing Code: Seeing the code assistant automatically catch type mismatches and resolve import errors in real time was incredible and saved hours of manual debugging.
Zero Boilerplate: Going from a single descriptive sentence to a fully functional, interactive React and TypeScript application in just minutes completely changes how fast ideas can be brought to life.

Overall, it's an amazing tool for anyone looking to bridge the gap between creative concepts and working code fast!

The "Portfolio Paradox"
Junior and mid-level developers fall into a trap: they think complexity of tech stack equals value.

They try to cram Docker, Kubernetes, GraphQL, and microservices into a simple blog app. It’s over-engineered garbage that solves a problem nobody has.

Recruiters and senior engineers don't care if you used Tailwind or Chakra UI. They want to see problem-solving stamina. They want to see that you can build something that handles edge cases, deals with messy data, and doesn't fall apart the second a user does something unexpected.

What Actually Goes Viral (and Gets You Hired)
The posts and projects that blow up on DEV.to, Hacker News, and Twitter share three traits:

They solve an annoying developer pain point.

They interact with messy real-world systems (file systems, networks, legacy APIs).

They have a clear "Before and After" narrative.

Instead of another dashboard, build a Local-First CLI Tool that automates a soul-crushing workflow.

The Blueprint: Build a Dead-Simple Log Anonymizer CLI
Let’s build something people actually need. Every company deals with PII (Personally Identifiable Information) leaking into server logs. Writing a regex-heavy tool to scrub it locally before it hits Datadog is infinitely more impressive than an e-commerce cart.

Here is how you structure it to make it look elite:

1. The Core Architecture (Keep it modular)

Don't dump everything into index.js. Show that you understand separation of concerns:

Write the post-mortem: Don't just say "I built X." Write an article titled: "I got tired of manual log scrubbing, so I spent 48 hours building this open-source CLI." Share the bugs you hit, the performance bottlenecks you faced, and how you fixed them.

Embrace the failures: Talk about how your first regex regex approach crashed on Unicode characters. Developers love vulnerability; perfection looks fake.

We’ve all been there. You open a pull request, high on caffeine, and drop a 4-line nested ternary operation wrapped in an array reduce function that performs an O(n) lookup in milliseconds.

It works. It's performant. It looks like black magic.

And three months later, you stare at it at 3:00 AM during an incident response, weeping because you have no earthly idea what your past self was thinking.

It is time for an industry-wide confession:
** Clever code is a technical debt factory.**

The Trap of the "Genius" Complex

When we learn to code, we equate complexity with capability.

Writing a for loop? Too junior.

Using a 5-layer generic abstract factory pattern for a boolean flag? Senior architecture.

We start optimizing for lines of code saved rather than cognitive load transferred. But software engineering isn't a code golf competition. It’s a team sport where your primary teammate is your future self, and your secondary teammate is a tired colleague trying to review your PR on a Friday afternoon.

To power this application, the project integrates the Google GenAI SDK using the gemini-2.5-flash model, the ElevenLabs API for text-to-speech voice synthesis, Solana with Python-QRcode for instant web3 micro-donations, and Snowflake for secure cloud data warehousing and impact tracking analytics.

The AI & Data Workflow

When a user submits their donation intent, the app executes a multi-step pipeline:

Intelligent Matching & Platform Sourcing: Gemini processes the user's input to dynamically generate:
- The Target Charity Category: Identifying the exact cause domain (e.g., Education, Warmth Drives, Food Security).
- Actionable Preparation Steps: Clear checklists on sorting, packing, or organizing contributions.
- Suggested Platforms & Search Terms: Verified organizations, platforms, or search queries to help users find active local drives and direct donation links.
- A Polished Outreach Draft: A professional template that users can instantly copy-paste to email or message local non-profits.
