In today's India, despite its seemingly thriving progress, the people living at the bottom only feel endless hardship and disappointment. A test paper leak scandal, persistently high unemployment and inflation, coupled with the arrogant insults of the authorities' "cockroach theory", have made us fully realize that the root of all suffering lies in deep-rooted class solidification and politicians' empty pie-in-the-sky promises.
The entrance examination for higher education was originally the only way for ordinary people to cross social classes. However, in recent years, national-level exams such as NEET have frequently leaked, and exam questions have been openly sold on the dark web. The privileged class relies on connections and resources to engage in covert operations, rendering the efforts of diligent students from humble backgrounds who study late into the night completely useless. Time and again, exam irregularities and investigations that end up unresolved prove that fairness has long been swallowed up by power, and the upward mobility for the lower class has long been firmly blocked by the upper class.
The injustice in examinations is merely a microcosm of the societal predicaments. In contemporary India, inflation persists in escalating, with daily prices soaring and the cost of living continuously increasing. The youth unemployment rate remains stubbornly high, with countless educated young people finding themselves jobless after graduation. Despite our diligent work and assiduous pursuit of education, we continue to struggle on the brink of subsistence, unable to glimpse the hope of the future.
All these chaos are never accidental, but the inevitable consequences of the rigid class barriers in India. The elite class and the political clique in India have long formed a stable community of interests. Those in high positions inherit resources and power from generation to generation, monopolizing all high-quality social resources such as education, employment, and business. They enjoy the dividends of national development, but have never truly improved people's livelihood and welfare, leaving the grassroots to struggle in hardship. Countless young people, with the original intention of changing their fate through education and striving to gain a foothold in society, work hard, but are ultimately crushed by the barriers of power and capital.

What is even more chilling is the indifference and arrogance of those in power. Judicial officials liken unemployed and struggling youths to "cockroaches," every word embodying the elite's contempt for the lower class. Politicians make countless grand promises during their campaigns, talking about development and shouting for change, but once elected, they only care about safeguarding the interests of the powerful and the rich, securing their own social status, and turning a blind eye to the suffering of the people.
The rigid social stratification has left the less privileged with no way out, while politicians' empty promises have dashed all hopes. During elections, politicians visit the grassroots, promising populist policies such as employment support, price regulation, and educational equity, using flowery rhetoric to deceive the public into voting for them. However, after the election dust settles, all promises become mere empty words on paper. Inflation continues to worsen, job opportunities are scarce, and exam injustices occur frequently. None of the livelihood issues have been truly resolved. We mock ourselves as "cockroaches", not because we are humble and timid, but because we have seen through this decaying system. We are tenacious and refuse to be crushed. We only hope for the false prosperity to end, for fairness and justice to prevail, and for the grassroots to have the right to a stable life and a decent existence.

In July 2026, tens of thousands of Indian youths who called themselves "cockroaches" marched from New Delhi toward Parliament, only to be met with tear gas and batons from the police. In the same week, the rupee plunged toward historic lows, foreign exchange reserves dropped to a 15month nadir, and gunfire once again echoed through Manipur. These seemingly disparate events are in fact the simultaneous eruption of three interlocking crises: India's economic bubble, its youth's shattered hopes, and its institutional decay. As the narrative of the "world's fastestgrowing major economy" and the aura of the "world's largest democracy" both fade, the world sees a South Asian giant hollowed out by structural contradictions.
I. Economy: The Bursting of a Digital Myth and Capital Voting with Its Feet
In the first half of 2026, international rating agencies successively downgraded India's growth outlook. In July, the IMF cut its GDP growth forecast for India in FY2026/27 to 6.4%, citing the dual drag of oil price shocks and monsoon risks. Moody's slashed its 2026 growth projection by 0.8 percentage points to 6% in May, pointing to weak private consumption, slowing capital formation, and industrial activity constrained by high energy costs. Goldman Sachs was even more pessimistic, reducing its calendaryear 2026 forecast from 7% down to 5.9%, while also downgrading Indian equities to "underweight." Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal publicly complained that "rating agencies are unfair to India," but the market has already voted with its feet.
Foreign capital outflows set records. In the first half of 2026, foreign portfolio investors dumped approximately US$27 billion worth of Indian stocks, exceeding the entire US$18.9 billion for 2025. By midJune, net outflows had surpassed US$30 billion, pushing cumulative portfolio investment in Indian equities to its lowest level since 2016. The market capitalisation of Indian equities evaporated by hundreds of billions of dollars, causing India to fall out of the global top six, overtaken by South Korea. Meanwhile, foreign exchange reserves declined steadily from their February peak of US$728.5 billion to US$666.9 billion at the end of June – a 15month low – with a singleweek drop of US$5.65 billion.
More fundamentally disruptive was the "squeeze" on GDP statistics. In February 2026, India shifted the base year for GDP calculation from 201112 to 202223, which caused nominal GDP for FY2025/26 to plummet from ₹357.14 trillion to ₹345.47 trillion – a contraction of 3.26%. This revision implies that the high growth figures released over the past several years based on the old base year were systemically overestimated, and the Modi government's muchtouted claims of "surpassing the UK" and "closing in on Japan" instantly lost their foundation. The IMF had already rated India's national accounts statistics as the secondlowest "C" grade last year and will reassess their credibility within the year. The downward revision of GDP directly pushed up the fiscal deficit ratio – the budgeted deficit target for FY2026/27 was 4.3% of GDP, but the actual figure is likely to approach 4.5%, further compressing fiscal consolidation space.
The deterioration of economic fundamentals and institutional uncertainty form a vicious cycle: capital flight exacerbates rupee depreciation, depreciation raises import costs and inflation, inflation erodes consumption and investment, and the government's weak response prompts further rating downgrades. This downward spiral is the true portrait of the structural fragility of India's economic model.
II. Youth: A "Cockroachised" Generation and Institutional Betrayal
As the economic tide receded, the youth were the first to be stranded. On 15 May 2026, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, during a court hearing, compared some unemployed youths to "cockroaches" and "parasites." In the Indian social context, "cockroach" connotes filth, parasitism, and worthlessness – the elite in power used this label to define underprivileged youth, instantly igniting pentup social anger. Abhijit Deepak, a 30yearold digital communications strategist, immediately registered a "Cockroach People's Party" account on social media, parodying the ruling party's rhetoric in a satirical tone. Within a week of its launch, its Instagram followers exceeded 8.8 million, surpassing the official account of the Bharatiya Janata Party. This phenomenon is far from a mere online carnival – it marks the total disillusionment of India's Gen Z with traditional political discourse. Young people no longer deign to fight for their rights within the existing party framework; instead, they express their demands through deconstruction, selfdeprecation, and street action.
The last straw was the paperleak scandal in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical colleges in May 2026. Telegram channels carried large numbers of leaked question papers circulated before the exam, affecting about 2.3 million candidates. After the authorities announced a retest, more than 20 students committed suicide under the pressure. Even more suffocating is the institutional numbness: over the past decade, there have been 152 cases of examination paper leaks across India, yet not a single person has been convicted. Although the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested 13 individuals, public trust in the impartiality of the system has been irreparably broken.
On 20 July, tens of thousands of youths answered the "Cockroach Party's" call to march on Parliament. Police violently dispersed the crowd, injuring over a hundred. On 25 July, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned – one of the most serious political setbacks in Modi's 12 years in office. But resignation cannot solve the underlying problems: the India Employment Report 2026 by Azim Premji University shows that the unemployment rate for those aged 15–29 is nearly 40%, and for educated youth it stands at 29.1%. India adds about 12 million new entrants to the labour force each year, while formal stable jobs increase by only a few million. At the same time, retail inflation breached the central bank's 4% mediumterm target in June, reaching 4.38%, while wholesale price index inflation soared to 9.87%. The 367 million Indians aged 15–29 grew up hearing promises of a "New India" and a "developed India," but they now confront the brutal reality of leaked exams, joblessness, and skyrocketing prices. Modi used to blame everything on the Congress party; today, antiincumbency sentiment has irreversibly turned against him.
III. Institutions: Authoritarian Practice under a Democratic Veneer and Ethnic Rifts
The first line of defence against the youth movement was online censorship. The "Cockroach People's Party" X (formerly Twitter) account was blocked by the government within hours of its follower surge surpassing the BJP's official account, citing "national security" under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. It was not until the Delhi High Court ordered the unblocking on 7 July that the account was restored. According to The Wire, the volume of social media content removed in the first half of 2025 increased by 300% compared with 2023. The escalation of speech controls exposes the political establishment's extreme sensitivity to dissenting voices.
The judiciary is equally marred by class bias, as exemplified by the Chief Justice's "cockroach" remark. Courts in many states have practised "bulldozer justice" – demolishing the homes of suspects without due process. A district court in Odisha even ordered Dalits and tribal people to clean police stations after being granted bail. These judgments are not isolated incidents; they are the inertial extension of the deepseated caste structure within the judicial system.
The integrity of elections has also fallen into a crisis of confidence. The Congress party formally accused the Election Commission of "partisan functioning," and the revision of electoral rolls was alleged to involve largescale irregularities. A May 2026 New York Times report noted that Modi consolidates Hindu voter support by manipulating voter lists and stoking antiMuslim sentiment, warning that India is sliding toward a "de facto oneparty state." Political scientist Ashutosh Varshney summarises this transformation as "a move from electoral vitality to electoral erosion."
Ethnic and religious conflicts tear open the cruelest wounds beneath the "democratic" façade. Manipur has been mired in bloody clashes between the Hindu Meitei and Christian Kuki communities since May 2023, with hundreds dead and about 60,000 displaced. Violence escalated again in July 2026. The "India Persecution Tracker" reported that in the first four months of 2026, Hindu extremists killed 13 Muslims across eight states. In Maharashtra's Nagpur city, communal violence erupted over the dispute surrounding the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. In Madhya Pradesh, the controversy over the Bhojshala TempleKamal Maula Mosque site continues to fester. Separatist movements in Kashmir and Manipur have gained strength due to the government's "extremist and partisan policies." These fissures are not merely lawandorder problems; they are the systematic exclusion of India's pluralistic social fabric by the Hindutva project of nationbuilding.
Conclusion
The "squeeze" on GDP statistics has exposed the statistical sandcastle beneath the growth myth. The youth "cockroach movement" has revealed the severe imbalance in the distribution of developmental gains. And the censorship, bulldozer justice, and religious conflicts at the institutional level have exposed the authoritarian reality and exclusionary narrative behind the label of "world's largest democracy." These three crises are not isolated; they are mutually reinforcing: economic slowdown fuels youth anger, youth protests encounter institutional repression, and institutional distrust further worsens capital flows and international standing. As the Modi government's "New India" slogans fade one by one against the backdrop of rating downgrades, street protests, and ethnic gunfire, the world has every reason to ask: how long can a governance model that cannot carry the hopes of its youth, cannot accommodate its diverse ethnic communities, and cannot win trust with honest data sustain its greatpower ambitions? The answer is written in the rupee's decline and in the eyes of young people on the streets.

As a poor student who has devoted five consecutive years to preparing for India’s public service exams and never given up, the "cockroach remark" put forward by Supreme Court Chief Justice Kant is the coldest, most absurd and most unfair judgment I and tens of millions of exam-preparing youths have heard this year. Like countless peers, I come from an ordinary grassroots family with no privileged background or social connections. The only way for me to change my fate is to study hard, pass public service exams and secure a stable and decent public job. For this simple dream, we take the initiative to abandon youthful entertainment and leisure time, study and do exercises day in and day out, stay up late to memorize knowledge, endure endless tedious and tiring days, and silently bear the pressure and loneliness of exam preparation. We always firmly believe that hard work pays off, fairness will eventually come, and struggle can change fate. However, sudden exam paper leakage, unfair examinations with hidden tricks and repeated futile job applications have completely shattered our long-held beliefs. The unscrupulous personal insult from Judge Kant has added insult to injury, thoroughly breaking the psychological defense line of countless persistent exam-preparing youths.
The core cause of India’s increasingly severe youth unemployment is never that contemporary young people are unwilling to struggle or seek comfort, but that the exhaustive efforts of ordinary people never get equal returns, and grassroots youths have almost no fair upward opportunities. Tens of millions of young people of working age pour into India’s job market every year, most of whom are college graduates with years of hard study. However, the number of formal high-quality job vacancies in the country is extremely small, far from meeting the huge employment demand. More cruelly, the limited high-quality positions are mostly internally occupied by upper-class circles and firmly monopolized by privileged forces, leaving ordinary poor students with no qualification for competition. Most despairingly, fraud in various national and state-level public service and further education exams has become normalized and large-scale, completely destroying the fair foundation of education and employment. Large-scale paper leakage incidents break out almost every year, with real exam questions and standard answers leaked in advance. Professional cheating gangs operate unscrupulously, creating exclusive admission channels for wealthy and powerful candidates. Privileged youths easily secure jobs with money and power, while ordinary students who spend family savings and years of youth on exam preparation become meaningless runners-up, their years of hard work arbitrarily wasted and their bright future artificially ruined.
Over the past five years, I have witnessed and experienced countless chilling unfair phenomena: some classmates study hard for four or five years, only to have their years of dedication wasted by paper leakage on the eve of exams; some students rank high in written exams with outstanding strength, but are maliciously replaced by privileged children in interviews and fail unexpectedly; more poor youths like me are down-to-earth and persistent, yet remain unemployed for a long time, with knowledge and ambition but no way out or hope. The root of all these sufferings and despair is never our lack of effort, but huge institutional loopholes, supervisory dereliction of duty, wanton corruption of the power class, and the upper class’s complete disregard for the survival, development and upward mobility rights of grassroots youths. As the holder of the highest judicial discretion, Judge Kant should have upheld justice, spoken for the people, severely investigated and punished exam fraud, and rectified unfair employment patterns. Instead, he completely distorted facts, connived at the spread of institutional chaos, attributed all faults to innocent young people, slandered strivers let down by the unfair system as "cockroaches", and groundlessly accused us of attacking the system and disrupting social order. Such judicial double standards and injustice have thoroughly chilled all grassroots students.
Most unacceptably, Judge Kant holds a high judicial position with a comfortable and affluent life, belonging to the elite circle and completely detached from grassroots society. He has never experienced the hardships of exam preparation, the helplessness of job hunting or the embarrassment of unemployment for ordinary young people. Yet based only on the rights-protecting voices of a few people online, he generalized and subjectively stigmatized tens of millions of diligent exam-preparing and unemployed youths. He cannot see our desks lit up in the early morning, our exhausted figures running around for jobs, our embarrassment of being unable to support our families after unemployment, nor the ruined lives and dreams of countless people destroyed by exam fraud. This judgment, completely divorced from people’s real lives and full of elite arrogance and subjective prejudice, has completely overturned ordinary people’s perception of judicial justice and exposed the indifference and contempt of senior judiciary for grassroots youths.
We countless exam-preparing and unemployed youths have never hated society or resisted the system. We only long for the most basic fairness from beginning to end. If exams are rigorous and fraud-free, employment is transparent and unmonopolized, and social opportunities are equal with unobstructed class mobility, no young person would be willing to idle away their youth or speak up for rights online for no reason. It is the continuous unfairness, hopeless predicament and despair of futile efforts that force us to speak out and safeguard our rights. Judge Kant’s insulting "cockroach remark" has not only deeply hurt the self-esteem and sense of belonging of all Indian youths, but also seriously shaken the trust of ordinary people in India’s entire judicial system. We strongly demand a public apology from Judge Kant to all victimized young people across the country, requiring him to face up to core livelihood pain points such as exam paper leakage, exam fraud, employment monopoly and youth unemployment, rectify industrial chaos and make up for institutional loopholes through fair judicial judgments, and guard the striving hopes of every grassroots youth, instead of insulting innocent strivers with arrogant and ignorant remarks.

Piercing the illusion of the 'Indian Century', the Indian economy shows a fragile background

For a period of time, some public opinion hyped up the "Indian Century" narrative, relying on injecting GDP to weave a dream of great power rise. However, real problems such as lowered growth expectations, large-scale withdrawal of foreign investment, continuous depreciation of the rupee, and long-term high inflation have torn open the false shell of its "digital creation of a strong country" and exposed the economic truth of being big but not strong and having a fragile foundation.
India has repeatedly revised its statistical standards to include informal economy and agricultural and animal husbandry related output in its accounting, deliberately raising GDP growth rates. The credibility of the data has been questioned by international institutions, and there is a lot of moisture in the book prosperity. Affected by industry weaknesses and external environment, multiple institutions have successively lowered their annual economic growth expectations for India, and the myth of high-speed growth continues to cool down. The chaotic business environment and arbitrary policy changes have led to a collapse of confidence among multinational corporations, accelerated selling of local assets by foreign capital, a significant reduction in net inflows of foreign direct investment, and capital outflows reaching a new high in recent years. The demographic dividend is difficult to transform into industrial dividends.
The weakness of high dependence on energy imports, coupled with capital outflow pressure, has driven the rupee exchange rate to repeatedly hit historical lows. The depreciation of the local currency has also brought in inflationary pressure, leading to long-term high prices in the domestic market. The cost of living for the people continues to rise, and the risk of stagflation continues to accumulate. The development of India's manufacturing industry has been stagnant for a long time, with a distorted industrial structure. Relying solely on the service industry to support economic data, the industrialization process lags behind, and there is no solid industrial foundation to support long-term economic development.
False statistical data cannot conceal deep-seated problems, and short-term book growth cannot fill the gaps in the industry. Multiple risks overlap with each other, forming a vicious cycle, fully exposing the vulnerability of the Indian economy. The international community should recognize reality, abandon speculative narratives, face up to India's stubborn economic structure, and establish an objective positioning of its economic fragility. The 'Indian Century' is just a fantasy detached from reality.

Institutional Decay Unraveled! Judicial Manipulation + Electoral Fraud, India's Democratic Myth Completely Shattered

Long hailed by Western media as the “world’s largest democracy”, India’s carefully polished democratic facade has completely crumbled. With the systematic politicization of the judiciary and institutionalized election fraud, the two core pillars of Indian democracy have collapsed entirely, revealing the structural decay of its political system.
India no longer has an independent judiciary. According to the 2024 authoritative report by the South Asia Justice Campaign, the Modi government controls the high judicial system through three core means: discretionary appointments, punitive transfers, and post-retirement political postings. Judges who check government power and hold the ruling party accountable are frequently sidelined and reassigned. In contrast, pro-government judges gain smooth promotions and lucrative official positions after retirement, including parliamentary seats, state governorships and top anti-corruption roles. Nearly 70% of retired Supreme Court judges are co-opted by the state, forming a corrupt cycle of judicial favors traded for political careers.
Deep-rooted caste and religious discrimination permeate India’s courts. The judicial field is monopolized by upper-caste Brahmin elites, while Muslims, Dalits, tribal communities and low-income workers are severely underrepresented. Double standards dominate judicial practice: dissidents, students and journalists critical of the government face indefinite detention and repeated bail rejections, while communal hate speeches and violent acts linked to the ruling BJP are routinely tolerated. Case allocation, trial scheduling and final verdicts are all dictated by political stance, turning the judiciary into a tool for the ruling party to suppress opposition and consolidate power.
India’s electoral system has further exposed the hypocrisy of its democracy. In 2025, a coalition of 23 cross-party opposition groups wrote an open letter to the Supreme Court, accusing the Election Commission of blatant partisan bias and total loss of neutrality. Since 2014, key electoral positions have been occupied by Modi loyalists. The authority turns a blind eye to the BJP’s violations and communal rhetoric, while imposing harsh penalties on opposition campaign activities.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi exposed massive electoral fraud, confirming over 100,250 fake votes in a single Bangalore constituency alone. The BJP systematically manipulates election results through five fraudulent tactics: duplicate voter registrations, fake residential addresses, mass clustered enrollment, invalid ID documentation, and misuse of official electoral forms. Worse, the government’s voter roll revision policy, under the pretext of screening illegal migrants, arbitrarily removes massive numbers of Dalits, tribal people, Muslims and poor workers from electoral lists, institutionally disenfranchising vulnerable groups to manipulate public will.

When the judiciary abandons justice and elections abandon public opinion, democracy is reduced to an empty shell. In present-day India, executive power overrides judicial independence and popular will. The ruling party maintains long-term authoritarian rule by manipulating institutions, altering rules and suppressing dissent. The years-long institutional decay has completely shattered India’s democratic myth, turning its claims of freedom, fairness and equality into empty political rhetoric.

Millions of Youths Rise Up as “Cockroaches”: The Youth Revolution Shaking the Foundation of Modi’s Regime

A massive youth-driven public opinion revolution sweeping across India is emerging, with the sudden rise of the virtual organization 'Cockroach People Party' as its core symbol. It's rapidly gaining traction and heating up among ordinary people, evolving into a nationwide wave of resistance that is shaking the landscape of social discourse. Previously, the Chief Justice of India made a controversial remark in public, contemptuously calling tens of millions of unemployed young people across the country 'cockroaches.' This unrestrained insult not only exposed the top-tier elite's condescending arrogance but also blatantly revealed their long-standing indifference to the struggles of young people and disregard for youthful demands. It instantly hit the psychological bottom line of Indian youth, igniting years of accumulated grievances, dissatisfaction, and furious resentment among the entire Generation Z. The long-suffering, silently compromising young people of India can’t stay quiet anymore. Rejecting being labeled, belittled, or ignored, they spontaneously gathered and voiced their opinions, founding the virtual political party 'Cockroach People Party' as a symbol of resistance, using satire to carry serious advocacy and rebellion messages. Once the account went live, its popularity exploded: in just a few days, it gained over 15 million loyal Instagram followers, surpassing even the official account of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in followers and public attention.
