I Finally Understood What MCP Actually Does in Claude Code

When I first started using Claude Code, I treated MCP as another feature I probably didn't need yet.

I could already ask Claude to read my code, modify files, run commands, search through a project, and help me debug things. So I kept wondering:

Why would I need MCP?

After spending more time experimenting with Claude Code, I realized I was looking at MCP from the wrong angle.

MCP isn't really about making Claude "smarter"

The simplest way I understand it now is:

Claude Code can work with the things it already has access to. MCP gives it a structured way to interact with additional tools and external systems.

For example, imagine Claude is helping me work on a project.

Without an external integration, my workflow might look like:

Claude Code
    ↓
Read repository
    ↓
Edit files
    ↓
Run tests

With MCP, the workflow can become much larger:

                    ┌── GitHub
                    │
Claude Code ── MCP ├── Database
                    │
                    ├── Browser
                    │
                    └── Other tools/services

That changes the interesting question from:

"What code can Claude write?"

to:

"What parts of my development workflow can Claude actually interact with?"

  A simple example

Suppose I'm working on a web application.

I might want Claude to:

Understand an issue

Inspect the repository

Check relevant documentation

Make the code changes

Run tests

Inspect the result

Update the issue

Prepare the final change

The important part isn't that Claude can write the code.

The interesting part is connecting the different pieces of the workflow together.

That's where MCP starts becoming much more interesting to me.

  The mistake I was making

Initially, I thought adding more MCP servers would automatically make Claude Code better.

I don't think that's true.

Adding ten tools doesn't necessarily make the workflow better. It can actually make things more confusing.

The more useful approach seems to be:

Start with a real problem → identify the missing capability → connect only the tool you actually need.

For example:

Problem:
"I need Claude to interact with X."

        ↓

Can Claude already do it?

        ↓

No

        ↓

Find an appropriate MCP integration

        ↓

Test the workflow

        ↓

Keep it only if it actually saves time

That last step is important.

I'm much more interested in tools that remove friction from a workflow than tools that simply look impressive in a demo.

MCP vs normal Claude Code tools

This was another thing I had to understand.

Claude Code already has tools for working with the local development environment.

MCP is useful when you want to extend that environment and give Claude access to additional capabilities or external systems.

So I now think about it roughly like this:

Claude Code
│
├── Built-in capabilities
│
└── MCP
     │
     ├── External tools
     ├── Services
     ├── Data
     └── APIs

Once I started thinking about MCP this way, it became much easier to understand why people are building increasingly complex Claude Code workflows around it.

  What I'm experimenting with next

The thing I'm most interested in now isn't collecting MCP servers.

It's finding a workflow where connecting one actually makes a noticeable difference.

For example:

Before

Find information
→ copy it
→ paste it into Claude
→ make changes
→ manually update another system

After

Claude Code
→ access the required context
→ perform the work
→ verify the result
→ interact with the relevant system

That's the direction that makes Claude Code interesting to me.

Not "AI can code."

More like:

AI can potentially become part of the entire development workflow.

I'm still experimenting with this, so I'm curious:

What MCP integration has actually saved you time in your day-to-day development?

Not the coolest one you've tried — the one you genuinely kept using.

I also recorded the experiment and walkthrough here for anyone who prefers seeing the workflow rather than reading about it:

Full disclosure: this is my own channel. I'm sharing it as a companion to the technical explanation above, not as a replacement for it.
