What It Takes to Become a Successful Programmer: Insights from Early Code Institute

Programming is no longer a niche skill—it is a cornerstone of modern careers. But what does it actually take to break into the field and build a sustainable career in tech?

I sat down with Mr. Henry, an experienced instructor at Early Code Institute, to explore this question and gain his insights into programming education, the challenges beginners commonly face, and his advice for aspiring developers.

Why Programming Matters More Than Ever

When asked why programming is so important in today’s world, Mr. Henry’s answer was straightforward: “We need to understand how programs are built and how systems are structured.”

He explained that programming is fundamentally about writing instructions that tell a computer what to do in order to achieve a specific outcome. While anyone can learn to code, developing a solid understanding of programming is particularly valuable for people pursuing careers in technology.

“You need to understand what programming is all about and how to get started.” — Mr. Henry

A strong foundation is essential, and that is where institutions like Early Code Institute aim to make a difference by helping learners develop the knowledge and practical skills they need to progress in programming.

The Real Challenges Beginners Face

One of the most insightful parts of our conversation was Mr. Henry’s discussion of the challenges beginners commonly encounter. He identified two major obstacles:

1. Lack of Attention to Detail

Beginners are often eager to learn but may overlook important foundational concepts.

“When you don’t pay attention to these things, you keep getting errors,” Mr. Henry explained.

Small mistakes can quickly lead to bigger problems in programming, which is why paying attention to details is important from the very beginning.

2. Fear of Error Messages

Another common hurdle is the anxiety beginners experience when they encounter error messages. Some students become frustrated, panic, or even give up when their code does not work as expected.

However, Mr. Henry encourages students to look at errors differently:

“An error is simply communicating that something is wrong somewhere. You need to understand the problem and then fix it.”

This shift in mindset—from seeing errors as failures to viewing them as useful feedback—is an important part of becoming a better programmer.

How Early Code Institute Prepares Students for the Real World

According to Mr. Henry, one of the key features of Early Code Institute’s approach is its structured learning process. Rather than rushing students through complex material, the institute takes a gradual approach to learning.

The approach includes:

Starting with the fundamentals before progressing to more advanced topics.
Checking students’ understanding at each stage and explaining the reasoning behind each concept.

“With all these things in place, I believe our students will be prepared and able to apply their skills when looking for jobs in the industry.” — Mr. Henry

As our conversation came to an end, I asked Mr. Henry what he would tell someone who is just beginning their programming journey. His advice was practical and encouraging.

Seeking support is not a weakness; it is part of the learning process. As Mr. Henry noted, “You can also seek support from your family.”

Having people around you who can encourage and support you can make the learning journey easier to navigate.

Programming is a broad field with many different career paths and areas of specialization. Instead of jumping into programming without a clear direction, aspiring programmers should first consider what they want to achieve.

As Mr. Henry put it:

“What do I want to do?”

Understanding your goals can help you determine which programming skills, tools, and learning resources you need to focus on.

Invest in the Essentials

Having the right resources can also make the learning process easier. Some important essentials include:

A reliable computer
A suitable learning environment
Access to quality educational resources and instruction

These resources can provide a strong foundation for learning and developing programming skills.
