Responsibility for the development of new services and be accountable for the overall success of deliveries including analysis and design,

Responsibility for the interaction of backend services with both each other and dependant frontends that will allow the business to maintain a platform of capability for websites

Gain an understanding of the infrastructure set-up, and use AWS to host and maintain sites

Skills & Experience:

Considerable hands-on experience developing services for backend APIs (e.g. REST, RPC, GraphQL)

Strong understanding of modern containerisation strategies (ideally Docker)

Experience with git source control

Experience with PHP Laravel or other back-end technology stacks and frameworks (Desirable)

Demonstrable understanding and experience of NodeJS and TypeScript (Desirable)

The job market seems to be picking up in most sectors again now, but jobseekers still generally outnumber the positions available. So how do you make sure your application stands out?

I put together a list of common stumbling blocks to help you focus your efforts where they count.

Are you already doing any / all of these? I know number 3 can be a bit controversial but honestly it's more important than ever!

Did I tell you guys I decided to make the most of the lockdown extension by taking Harvard University's online Intro to Computer Science course?

Well, last week for problem 0 I made a little game 🙈

I was excited to finish and get to share it with you guys whilst I was making it and then felt too shy to actually share it once I was done but I'm feeling brave again so here it is 🙈

It's a bit silly but I don't think it's too bad for a first attempt. Be nice 😂

How is Covid-19 impacting the UK job market?

Should you still be looking?

It's come as yet another blow to the high street and airlines are struggling, but there are some postives:

1) Many companies are now interviewing remotely to minimize risk, which is making the overall hiring process faster, more convenient and cheaper for candiates.

2) Companies which have always been hesitant about remote working are now realising that flexibility doesn't come at the expense of productivity, something which increases access to opportunity to a great number of people and increase diversity

3) Infrastructure will also improve for people who already work remotely as it becomes "the new normal"

4) There's a reduction in meetings for the sake of meetings or "face time" - boosting productivity

5) As with any time of change, there will be less competition for the top jobs as many people hold off on making any moves

So overall, still a good time to look depending on industry.

The difficulty seems to be that as Fortune 100 companies increasingly have AI doing more and more autonomously, they’re not sure if they can find (a human) someone who would qualify as an inventor which is resulting in patent applications being turned down due to legislation which stipulates the inventor must be a natural person.

Is this going to slow down the advancement of AI and Machine Learning technology as companies don't want to risk losing the protecting of patents? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Advice for hiring managers

This is possibly the best hiring advice for the current market!

With UK employment rates at an all time high, there are fewer people actively looking for new opportunites, meaning greater competition for a smaller talent pool.

Companies need to be mindful of this and as considerate as possible throughout the hiring process - provide feedback as quickly as possible and streamline the interview process where you can.

How to structure your CV when you have limited experience

It’s #TipTuesday - my (not so new) little mini series where I share little things that can make a big difference in helping you to secure as many interviews as possible and stop you from getting lost in the mix.

Tip number 4 is about how to structure your CV when you haven’t got much experience (i.e. for entry level or graduate roles).

I’m not going to lie to you, it’s tough out there. Everyone seems to be looking for a fresh grad with 10 years’ experience and you’re sifting through job ads like poor Winona here.

Here’s what I know to help you navigate through one of the most difficult stages of your career:

1) Hands down the most valuable things you can do to land your dream graduate role are sandwich years and internships / graduate programmes. If you’ve done these, highlight them right at the top of your CV above your education. If you haven’t, I would seriously look into it. Roughly a year of experience through a either a sandwich year or internship is what employers are looking for when they’re asking for experience in entry level / grad roles.

2) Keywords (see #TipTuesdays numbers 3 and 4) are still important – what tech have you used / studied? List out everything you can, including personal projects.

3) Showcase your portfolio by adding links to your CV

4) Participate in the tech community – twitter, LinkedIn, https://buff.ly/2A0lKXV, etc (Tae'lur Alexis is an incredible example of this - https://buff.ly/38QbVbl)

5) Contribute as much as you can (https://buff.ly/1QxPHQb)

6) Don’t underestimate the power of networking – I heard of one lady who wrote a list of the top companies she wanted to work for after graduating and reached out to friends and family asking if any of them knew anyone working at any of those companies. She was able to set up 20 or so coffee dates in her final year. This Forbes article also offers some good tips - https://buff.ly/2RzZoDg

Hope you found this #TipTuesday helpful. It’s a bit of a difficult topic and I don’t specialist in graduate recruitment but you guys requested so I’ve done my best.

Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments and what you’d like advice on in future #TipTuesdays!

If you’ve missed the rest of my #TipTuesday series, you can find them all here:

Week 1 - https://buff.ly/30vh5Xk

Week 2 – https://buff.ly/38PB32i

Week 3 – https://buff.ly/37DCgcw
