ITShifting.com analyzed job listings on Glassdoor to find out hiring trends to watch for in 2020 in the American tech job market. The analysis includes data for 33 IT occupations in the 25 largest US cities and surrounding towns.

The analysis showed that, by a number of occurrences, the most popular programming languages that can be spotted in job listings in the United States are Java, JavaScript, and Python. They are by a long shot far ahead of other popular programming languages such as C and Go. K, C++, R, Ruby, and PHP also make the top 10.

Other popular hard skills (frameworks, libraries, markup and query languages, platforms, tools, etc.) sought after by US employers include SQL, AWS, Azure, CSS, HTML, Angular, and Docker.

Top 10 trending programming languages 2020

ITShifting.com analyzed Google search queries and found out the top 10 trending programming languages as well as top countries showing the highest interest in those languages.

Google Trends is a tool that shows the relative popularity of search queries — the ratio of a query’s search volume to the sum of the search volumes of all possible queries. The resulting numbers are scaled on a range of 0 to 100 based on a topic’s proportion to all searches, where 100 speaks of the maximum interest.

Over 12 months ending in August 2020, the most searched programming languages were JavaScript, Kotlin, and Python — the average ratio of queries related to these terms exceeded 90.

Other popular languages include TypeScript, Groovy, Go, Powershell, Assembly language, Ruby, and C#, with ratios of 85 or more.

ITShifting.com also looked at the interest by region to see in which locations terms related to programming languages were most popular over the last 12 months.

For all top 10 queries, the maps look almost alike, with China leading in popularity of search terms. Here are several examples:

China is the location with the highest popularity of all top 10 terms (popularity ratio 100) except Powershell (popularity ratio 39). However, a higher value means a higher proportion of all queries of total searches in that location, not a higher absolute query count.

In other countries, terms related to programming languages are less than half as popular. If we exclude low search volume regions, countries with the popularity > 10 of the top 5 terms are South Korea, Israel, and Belarus.

Locations with higher interest also include Armenia (JavaScript and C# related queries), Singapore (Python-related queries), Luxembourg, Switzerland, Denmark, New Zealand, Netherlands (Powershell related queries), Ethiopia and Pakistan (Assembly language), and Japan and Tanzania (Ruby search queries).

ITShifing.com has analyzed websites of 180 tech companies in the United Kingdom and found out what perks and benefits they offer to their employees.

Health care and retirement plans are the most common benefits: they are mentioned by 71% and 62% of the companies analyzed, respectively.

This is the share of tech businesses that consider these benefits worth mentioning on their websites — the real percentage might reach 100% as health care insurance and pension plans are among the must-have services that should be offered to all permanent employees.

Other popular (50% or more companies) perks and benefits in the UK include annual leave, learning and development opportunities, snacks and drinks, and flexible hours.

Out of 127 companies that mention health care benefits on their websites, some also offer:

Vision coverage, eye test vouchers or paid eye tests — 37%
Monthly free or subsidized massages, or weekly massages onsite — 8%

Out of 93 companies that mention flexible hours, 22% also mention work from home or remote work opportunities.

Out of 60 companies that mention sports, 39% mention corporate gym membership of gym reimbursement, 13% mention ping pong, and 7% table tennis. Surprisingly, football is favored by only two companies.

Less common perks include Cycle to Work scheme, stock options, commuter benefits, volunteer days off, and more.

Until President Donald Trump has suspended H-1B visas, this visa program remained one of the most popular among international high-skilled workers.

H-1B is a nonimmigrant visa that allows U.S. employers to sponsor foreign workers to temporarily perform jobs in skilled occupations. These visas are rewarded on a first-come, first-served basis, or through a lottery based on the number of applications submitted to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The duration of stay on an H-1B visa is 3 years, extendable to 6 years.

Which nationalities receive the visas most often

According to analysis by ITShifting.com, almost 72% of all H-1B visas in 2019 were approved for Indians and 13% for the Chinese. These categories of migrants account for 278,491 and 50,609 visas, respectively (including visas that were extended). Canadians come third with 1.2% of visas. All other nationalities are trailing far behind, each having less than 1% of approved visa petitions.

Top companies requesting H-1B visas

About 65% of H-1B visas certified in the first half of 2020 account for the IT sector, with 8 companies out of the top 10 employers that requested H-1B visas being technology corporations (according to Myvisajobs.com data).

Almost 9% of visas (or 15,150) in the first half of 2020 were requested by Cognizant — an American multinational corporation that provides IT services and is headquartered in Teaneck, New Jersey. The company’s total number of employees in North America stands at about 46,400 as of 2019.

Google requested 5,188 visas for its international employers. Additionally, six more companies applied for more than 3,000 visas, including Deloitte Consulting, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Amazon Services, Microsoft, and Ernst & Young. Top 10 companies also include Capgemini America and IBM.

Top IT occupations receiving H-1B visas

Software engineers and software developers are the top IT occupations by the number of H-1B visas in the first half of 2020. They account for 7.5 and 5% of visas, respectively.

Senior systems analysts, IT managers, and senior software engineers also make the top 5 occupations, according to the Myvisajobs.com data.

US cities with the highest IT salaries

Average IT salaries vary dramatically across the top 25 largest cities. The general (and quite obvious) trend is the following: the larger and more developed the IT job market is, the higher the IT salaries in the city are, regardless of the city’s size and population.

In three cities — San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle — the average IT salary surpasses the $100,000 mark. The average annual pay for IT workers stands at $122,800 in San Francisco, $115,600 in San Jose, and $105,100 in Seattle.

In New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, DC, and Chicago, IT salaries are also higher than the national average of $91,800 per year.

Jacksonville, San Antonio, Nashville, Indianapolis, and El Paso offer the lowest IT salaries among the largest cities. El Paso hits rock bottom in terms of the average remuneration for tech workers — $65,500 per year or almost two times lower than in San Francisco. This city in the far western part of Texas also offers the fewest number of IT job listings among 25 locations.

Highest-paying IT jobs

The top three most highly-paying tech occupations in the United States are architects: cloud architects, solution architects, and network architects. Their average salary surpasses $100,000 per year. As opposed to developers who mostly execute tasks, tech architects set standards and make high-level design choices.

Other IT occupations whose average salaries are $100,000 or higher include engineers, namely cloud engineers, site reliability engineers, software engineers, and DevOps engineers. Like architects, engineers also design and plan while being aware of the “big picture”. Apart from architects and engineers, salaries in the range of $100,000+ are also offered to data scientists and scrum masters.

Salaries in the lower range ($80,000 per year or less) are offered to systems analysts, data analysts, technical writers, and technical support specialists.

Popular hard and soft skills

The most popular programming languages that can be spotted in job listings in the United States are Java, Python, JavaScript, C, Go, and .NET.

Other popular hard skills (frameworks, markup and query languages, platforms, tools, etc.) include SQL, AWS, Azure, Excel, CSS, HTML, Oracle, and Docker.

As to soft skills (or personality traits), the most commonly mentioned ones include “leadership”, “collaborative”, “problem solving”, “flexibility”, “accuracy”, “energy”, “teamwork”, “respect”, “creativity”, and “productivity”.

In other words, US employers tend to appreciate the ability to work in a team and solve problems, be collaborative, flexible, and respectful. At the same time, job candidates need to be creative, productive, and full of energy.
