Ghost in the Machine: "The Living Ofrenda" (A 100% Local AI Memory Vault)

What I Built
I built 'The Living Ofrenda' which is an air-gapped, multimodal memory vault for Día de los Muertos. It's a completely private, offline web app where you can upload a photo of a loved one you've lost, share a memory and get back a bespoke poem and an ofrenda blessing. The whole concept is that it's a sacred space to honour the past and the memories we hold, rather than anything at all spooky.

The Living Ofrenda: Local Memory Vault

Description
An air-gapped, multimodal memory vault built for the Hacktoberfest Ghost in the Machine Challenge.

The Living Ofrenda is a completely private, offline web application where users can place a photo of a departed loved one, share a cherished memory, and receive a customized, poetic celebration of life. It runs entirely locally on consumer hardware (tested on an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G with no discrete GPU).

Features

Zero Cloud APIs: Memories and family photos never leave your hard drive.

Multimodal Vision: Uses the Moondream model to look at uploaded photos and understand their context locally.

Offline Text Processing: Uses the Llama 3.2 model to weave traditional, respectful Dia de los Muertos poetry.

CSS and Vector Art: Features native, flickering SVG candles and CSS-aged Polaroid effects without needing external image files.

Dependencies

This project requires Python and the following packages:

streamlit (version 1.39.0 or higher)

…

View on GitHub

How I Built It
The app is Python and Streamlit (so it's a very much a 'software' interface rather than a physical altar) and I've gone to quite some lengths to make it look and feel like an altar. The background is a pure CSS deep plum to midnight radial gradient. I've embedded native SVG vector art to create the animated flickering candles and the traditional cempasúchil (marigold) flowers.

When you upload a standard photo it's immediately given a vintage look via custom CSS (sepia filter, heavy drop shadow and a tilted Polaroid border) so it looks like a real physical keepsake sitting on the altar.

For the AI we're using Ollama to run the inference locally. The local moondream (1.8B) vision model looks at the photo you've uploaded to get a sense of the visual context. It then passes that visual context along with your written memories to llama3.2:3b which creates the traditional Día de los Muertos tribute and outputs it as a CSS styled parchment paper letter.

Why does Open Innovation matter?
Open innovation is the only way this project could possibly exist securely. The whole premise of this build is built on open weight AI. A closed API would simply be untenable in the context of an app that's dealing with grief and memory.

Total Privacy: people should never be required to upload intimate photos of their dead family members or private stories to the closed corporate servers where the data policies can change and the logs will remain. This is an entirely air-gapped system as it uses open weight models. The memories never leave your hard drive.

Accessible hardware: I built and ran the entire multimodal pipeline on a budget AMD Ryzen 5 5600G APU with 16GB of shared system RAM (so no discrete GPU at all). Using extremely well optimised models such as Moondream and Llama 3.2 we've demonstrated that you don't need a cloud instance or a high end GPU to run quite impressive vision language models locally.

True permanence: proprietary models get deprecated and endpoints get shut down. A memorial app shouldn't just vanish because the company has decided to pivot. The fact that I have the model weights on my own machine means this Ofrenda can be turned on years from now and will work exactly as it does today.
The Spirit of It
The fact that the AI took a simple picture that had been uploaded, turned it into a rather lovely aged Polaroid on a candlelit screen and then wrote a beautiful, very personal poem about a loved one's memory which was entirely offline was actually quite moving. It was a very effective way of keeping the story alive and didn't at all come across as some cold tech demo.
