      <description>&lt;p&gt;When an application starts using more than one language model provider, the hard part is rarely the first API call. The hard part is everything that follows: separate credentials, different request shapes, provider-specific errors, billing dashboards, and model migrations scattered across the codebase.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A useful way to reduce that surface area is to keep one OpenAI-compatible client contract and move provider choice into configuration.&lt;/p&gt;

  3. Test compatibility, not just HTTP 200
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;An OpenAI-compatible endpoint gives you a stable request shape. It does &lt;strong&gt;not&lt;/strong&gt; mean every model behaves identically.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Before switching production traffic, run the same evaluation set against each candidate and record:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;task correctness&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;response latency&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;retry rate and timeout behavior&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;context and output limits&lt;/li&gt;

  4. Add bounded retries and request tracing

&lt;p&gt;Do not retry authentication errors or malformed payloads. Those need a code or configuration fix, not more traffic.&lt;/p&gt;
