Doing Everything You Can, With Everything You Have

3 weeks ago my lens, my perspective on my world, shifted.

I, Jacqueline Nagle went north to visit my daughter, staying the weekend in Yeppoon – a town I lived in for 15 years where I married, raised my children, built businesses and loved life.

What was interesting was not that I went back but a conversation with my daughter that reminded me just how much her father and I had done in that town. The homes we had built and renovated, the businesses he had built, that I had built, and the ones we had built together. The Chamber of Commerce I was part of starting, the Local Tourist Organisation I reinvigorated, and the Business Women’s Network I took from irrelevant to sought after.

It was a place where my children got to create, as my eldest son recently put it on social media, a childhood worth remembering. A town that if not for the breakdown of my marriage I may well still be living in.

And yet, moving through the centre of town where we could see many of the landmarks of that life, I realised there is barely a trace of us there now. That most people there now would not even know my then-husband or I and what we did, and how hard we worked, lived, loved and played there.

Instead of listening to the whispers in my mind I realised the messages were reverberating.

Because what worked in that beautiful seaside village was not how beautiful it is. Nor the opportunity that did or did not exist.

It was in the decision to be there. To be completely there. To forget popularity and allow heart to rule. To see things you knew you could help and to simply shift to do it. It was in finding ways to connect, to contribute.

I realised what terrifies me more than anything on this planet, is the thought of a life most ordinary; a life not lived on or in purpose; a life where we don’t get to do great work that permeates every corner of our world.

And this is where honest self-reflection comes to play. Because since that marriage meltdown, since literally trying to outrun the emotional impact of that, since taking a hit on every level in the events since, I have skimmed through the questions that matter.

*What is the business I truly want?

What does matter to me about the work that I do?

How and what can I best create to make the world of the people I work, live and play with better?*

Those questions, together with standing where the beach collides with the street in a seaside village I still love, crystalised what matters.

I created a purpose for this current business, this current thing that I do, and that was to give everyone a voice; that everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to be heard.

But it’s far, far more than that.

It is about micro-economic empowerment. To breathe life into opportunity and potential, to see something that should be done, and simply do it. It is about connecting in, being a part of something greater than me, and contributing to the future success of a place – one business, one opportunity, and one person at a time.

It’s about finding ways to make the most of whatever stands before you. It’s about doing everything you can with everything you have in this moment right now.

Which means there are changes afoot. Some will be obvious, some will appear a seamless evolution, and most will be invisible to anyone but those closest to me.

And as I start to unpack all of this, to elevate and evolve what it is we do, where we play and how we play there, I wanted to take a moment to ask you.

*What is the thing you are most here to do?

Who is it you believe you can and simply must serve?

And how can you bring that to the world in a way that both the world craves, and continually lights you up?*

Until next we speak.

Tips to Ignite Your Zeal by Jacqueline Nagle

Can a person be successful without the zeal or passion to do something? I doubt it! Businesses, CEOs, politicians, successful career men and women, the zeal to pursue it against all odds is what makes them who they are today. The fact is the journey to success is not always smooth. The pain, the struggles, the challenges, the disappointments and so much more are enough to make any man quit. Hence, the end goal becomes the focus, the zeal becomes the driver driving you through the rough road to your destination.

But what happens when you lose that zeal? Well, it’s okay to be tired, weary, disappointed, and discouraged. It’s all part of human nature and even machines that tend to work like a clock sometimes require reignition once the power is turned off. The good news is you can restore your passion. You can power your tenacity, that zeal can be reignited. Jacqueline Nagle, a passionate mentor, strategist and speaker is here to help you power up and remind you of how it all started. She shares these powerful tools to help you reignite your zeal. Keep reading!

Be grateful
Be thankful for life, for the people in your life, your achievements- pasts and presents, and all the goodness in your life. Being grateful makes you feel more positive about life, it relishes good experiences, and builds your mental and emotional health. When you are in a positive mood, even mountains that seem difficult to climb will be far easier for you.

See mistakes as a teacher
So far you are progressing, mistakes are bound to happen. Expect them, learn from and move on. Easier said than done right? Well, mistakes are not really pleasant, but when you see them as the best teachers, you wouldn’t dwell too much on them. The point is one doesn’t always learn from success. Learning from others’ mistakes as well is great but when it’s your own mistakes, it hits deeper. However, it’s not the mistakes that matter. It’s how you handle it, what you learn from it, and how you apply that to your life.

Stay in the present
“Enough of mind wandering. Enough of always being on your phone and keeping up with others living on social media. Enough of worries and anxieties. These are what steal you of your moments, your presents and it all looks like you aren’t living at all, “Jacqueline Nagle advises. Although this might be difficult especially when you have a lot of things on your to-do lists, however, there are many benefits to this. You get to increase your focus, improve your memory and promote emotional health. Plus, if you’re caught up in all of these, it’s hard to get anything done. Caught out all distractions, take a deep breath, be mindful of your environment and enjoy the moment.

Finish what you started
Are you a starter or a finisher? You already know the race is for those that finish well and part of being successful is knowing how to finish what you started. If you have a lot of unfinished business i.e, a business you quit along the way, a project you got tired of, a course you never finished, chances are all these might dampen your enthusiasm and kill your zeal. Success breeds success, therefore, never quit anything until you see it to finish. Look at your past, what are the things that make you throw in the towel? How can you avoid them? Then, measure up your progress and get going.

Remain focused on your goal
Remember the purpose and what drives your passion. Remember what makes you get started in the first place and what you stand to gain when you reach your goal. Constantly remind yourself how great it will be and how you will feel when you get there. All these are enough reasons to get up and get drilling. Why do you start? What will you gain from it?

Reward yourself for every win
Another thing to do is to break big challenges into chunks. Do it and watch your self-motivation increase. However, don’t just stop at that. Pat yourself on the back for every milestone achieved by rewarding yourself. It could be taking yourself out on a date. Reading a book you enjoy or treating yourself to a good spa. In other words, give yourself a good reward for those things you get completed.

Be inspired
Sometimes, everyone needs motivation and encouragement. The good thing is there are people around you whether online or offline who might have finished the same project that you are currently working on. There are those that can be regarded as mentors, who will be more than willing to share their success stories with you. You can also google those that you see as role models to know how they go about it. Read motivational quotes written by successful people. All these are sure to encourage you and get you to rise and put in the energy and enthusiasm you started with.

These tips provided by Jacqueline Nagle are proven ways for self-motivation that will set you up for success. They will let you push through challenges, difficulties, pains and make it to the end goal. Hence, regularly check yourself to see if you are on the right track. If not, reignite and get your zeal running. The goal is to finish well and strong!

Speaking Is The Ultimate Expression Of Emotional Intelligence

Young, impressionable, and ambitious, when working in recruitment and consulting in 1998 I (Jacqueline Nagle) stumbled on Daniel Goleman's book Emotional Intelligence and instantly felt he had unlocked the mysteries to building great places of work.

I became obsessed, and over the next three years became accredited in as many EI and EQ assessment tools as I possibly could, taking each accreditation as far as possible without actually being a qualified and licensed psychologist.

That world was vastly different. Even when EI caught your attention as a concept, you were still caught in a world of change, fighting sometimes to bring understanding to the shift from IQ to EQ and EI and just how critical it was in creating great spaces to work, live and play in the future.

Now, Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Competence spill out of our mouths as easily as 'do you want me to grab a coffee?' and our attention has shifted to the next coming intelligence - Artificial Intelligence, and its impact on leadership, the way we work, and the way we interact with the world around us.

Google 'The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on work' and Dr Google will deliver 157,000,000 search results in less than a second. Google 'The impact of Artificial Intelligence on Leadership' and the good Dr will bring you back more than 25,000,000 search results.

Skim, read, or deep dive; consume the articles written and participate in the conversations and you will see the consensus which has rapidly formed - from high performance organisations, defence, researchers, thought leaders, practitioners in the space, and commentators on the future of leadership and of work - AI and everything it brings with it means there is one intelligence that will become critical in navigating the world unfolding before us:

Emotional Intelligence.

The ability to develop a deep level of self-awareness, to be aware of others emotions, and to bring that information together in a powerful way to navigate and manage both the relationship you hold with yourself, and the relationships you hold with others.

But how do we see who is emotionally intelligent, who isn't, and who is still building the muscle of emotional intelligence?

It is in how they speak.

Through the words they use. The way their articulate their message. The ability to build a picture in someone else's mind, to distil a vision, a way of thinking.

The ability to wrap us up in the dramatic, the unacceptable, in hope and possibility, to challenge us to think and act differently. To inspire, to coach and to mentor.

It is the ability to rapidly assess when in crisis, to identify where we stand right now, the possibilities before us, and to articulate the solution - rapidly.

It is the ability to use our words to instill confidence, to destroy belief, to create consensus, and to build momentum.

It is in how we craft our ability to influence, to dissolve conflict, to lead the people surrounding us through adaptive change.

It is how the great speakers and orators transport us to an alternate reality, a world of possibility, where we fall in love with both people and message - or choose to exit stage right.

The great speakers and orators understand they are the curators of the greatest emotional incubators in the world… the places where people gather to listen, be told, inspired, find answers, unlock courage and hope.

It is in how they:

-Create connection through story, weaving empathy, similarity and familiarity into their messages.

-Take a vision and recreate it in the minds of their audience through the words they use, their flow, and the charisma with which they deliver it.

-Understand the privilege of the platform, the opportunity to impact lives, to serve in creating a better world - starting as the individual, then causing a ripple effect of global impact.

-Deeply understand the responsibility they hold for the emotional state of the room in front of them, being completely aware of the power they have to create an environment of their choosing.

-Articulate messages which are digestible, which wrap all of us up, and allow them to enter someone else's world with empathy.

-Use their words with volition and on purpose, to navigate their own path. And in doing so, create a path which their audience can easily follow should they choose to.

The greatest speakers and orators - on any stage in any room - have spent the time honing their craft.

It is far beyond crafting great content and building, it is:

-A high level of emotional self-awareness and its impact

-Striving to bring emotional balance, to speak with strength and grace

-Holding a deep understanding that even when raw they must deliver a level of hope and insight

-Building sensory acuity to be able to adapt to environment and nuances rapidly to deliver consistency

-Infusing everything they do with incremental improvement, to push through to the next level

-Building empathy, rapport, understanding, and relatability rapidly through the words they use

-Understanding the power of influence, and the opportunities to educate and coach in the moment

-Knowing when to inspire, to agitate, to instigate, to ignite and how to do it with strength and grace

They are emotionally intelligent, and it shows in the way that they speak.

Original Source: jacquelinenagle.com

The Truth About Impact by Jacqueline Nagle

One of the projects I, Jacqueline Nagle, most proud of in my life happened almost by accident. As the General Manager of a Recruitment Firm in Regional Australia we were working with clients through the first of this business generations skills shortage in the mining sector, about 15 years ago.

One particular mining services business had both ‘in town’ and site operations and were struggling to attract great talent to the in-town positions because even though it paid the same salary and you could be home every night, people were so enamored with the huge amounts of money being earnt by ‘going to the mines’ they weren’t even seeing the opportunity.

In a meeting to discuss yet another failed attraction strategy, I asked the Site CFO if they would be interested in something really left field? They were desperate and said yes. The Site CFO walked me out to my car and asked me what I had in mind, and my response was nothing yet, I just need to know if I create something you will at least listen.

The project which resulted was at the time revolutionary; to hire unskilled women who were not in the workforce, who’s children were now in school. To over employ by 30% so those women could take time off without pressure when their children were ill. To work the rostering so that every woman between rostering and leave accruals could have half the school holidays with their children. To pay them the same as the mine site conditions so they could say goodbye to Centrelink, and let their earnings shut up their communities who would remind them it was their job to stay home with the kids. We stripped the purely process driven tasks out of the Tradesman’s jobs, tested the manual dexterity of these women, and taught them those tasks.

The results were so powerful the project became part of how the organisation operated, it was rolled out to other sites and financially they became one of our largest clients in an 8 figure recruitment business.

But most importantly, this changed the lives of these women forever, giving these women opportunities they had never thought possible. And that is what I remember.

True, sustainable, impact which improves the life of another human.

The truth is impact is not something you create sitting in a vacuum. It exists at the collision of doing great work, lived experience, and collaboration.

It is in doing what it takes to do great work that we create the foundational strength necessary to really elevate what we do and to have the strength to navigate the hits and apparent impasse’s which appear.

Great work by its very nature means we have to delve into it, beyond thinking and learning, we have to build lived experience and evidenced strategies to continually deepen the strength of what we do. The surprise is it is through this lived experience that we are able to create strategic positioning congruent to who we are that is uniquely, unassailably ours.

And in a world obsessed with the word collaboration, few of us realise the true power in collaboration; that great collaboration is more than simply alignment of purpose and agreement to do something together. It is the combination of resources, of true commercial savvy which delivers longevity through being unapologetic in your belief that commercial viability is oxygen when it comes to creating sustainable impact.

This game, creating sustainable impact, belongs to those of who understand this is not about the next game, but as Simon Sinek calls it, the infinite game. Where we are willing to build deep expertise through great work knowing that work still matters — even if not right in this split second. It is in our ability to step back, to survey, and to choose the next best move. It is in knowing our voice, our messaging doesn’t have to change, except in acknowledgement, and in that the people surrounding us feel they can rely on us, our ability to remain consistent. It’s because we have built our commercial savvy quotient to a level which means we have the resources and the skills to make the necessary decisions and take the necessary steps to be commercially sustainable in an environment that will prove itself to be simply a moment in time.

Lockdown and pandemics do not create a vacuum; we do. And right now you can choose to sink into the vacuum or think about your infinite game, redefine and recommit to the impact you say you want to make, and you can choose to create your own collision point — where your great work and lived experience can fuse with the power of collaboration to make a truly you-shaped dent in the universe.
