This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

StudyMate — An Offline AI Study Buddy Built for My Friend

 What I Built

I built StudyMate, a private AI-powered study companion designed specifically for my friend Ben, who was struggling to revise large amounts of study material before exams.

Instead of building another general-purpose AI chatbot, I wanted to build something that could actually understand the material my friend was studying from.

StudyMate allows them to upload their own notes, PDFs, study material, and other academic resources and then interact with them using natural language.

It can:

📚 Explain difficult concepts in simple language

📝 Summarize chapters and notes

🧠 Generate questions from study material

🎯 Create practice quizzes

🎤 Simulate viva/interview questions

⚡ Generate quick revision notes

🔎 Answer questions based on uploaded documents

📊 Help identify topics that need more revision

The most important part is that the AI is designed to run locally, keeping my friend's study material on their own machine instead of automatically sending it to a third-party AI service.

The goal wasn't to build something huge.

It was to build something useful for one person I actually know.

 Demo

🎥 Demo Video: [ADD YOUR DEMO VIDEO LINK]

🌐 Live Demo: [ADD YOUR DEPLOYED LINK IF AVAILABLE]

The demo shows how my friend can upload their study material and use StudyMate to ask questions, generate revision material, and practice for exams.

 Code

💻 GitHub Repository: [ADD YOUR GITHUB REPOSITORY LINK]

The complete source code is available in the repository.

The project is designed so that the AI layer can be changed without rebuilding the entire application. This makes it possible to experiment with different open models and local inference setups.

 How I Built It

The core idea behind StudyMate is simple:

Your documents → Local knowledge base → Open-source AI → Personalized answers

 Tech Stack

Frontend

React

JavaScript

HTML

CSS

Backend

Python

FastAPI

AI

Ollama

[Qwen / Llama / Gemma — USE YOUR ACTUAL MODEL]

Knowledge Retrieval

Local embeddings

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)

[ChromaDB / FAISS — USE WHAT YOU ACTUALLY USE]

Document Processing

PDF/text extraction

Document chunking

Embedding generation

Semantic retrieval

 How the system works

When my friend uploads a document, StudyMate processes it and breaks the content into smaller chunks.

Those chunks are converted into embeddings and stored locally.

When my friend asks a question, the application first searches the local knowledge base for the most relevant information.

The relevant context is then provided to the local open-weight model.

The model generates an answer based on that context.

So instead of:

User
↓
Cloud AI API
↓
Answer

StudyMate follows:

User
↓
StudyMate
↓
Local Documents
↓
Local Vector Database
↓
Local Open Model
↓
Answer

This gives the application much more control over the data and AI pipeline.

 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

This is the part of the project that matters most to me.

I could have built StudyMate using a closed AI API and probably finished the prototype faster.

But the whole point of this project was to explore what becomes possible when the AI itself is more open and controllable.

 🔐 Privacy

My friend's notes can contain personal information, assignments, class material, and other documents they may not want to upload to an external AI provider.

With local inference, the documents can remain on their own machine.

Their study material doesn't need to leave the device just to ask an AI a question.

 💻 Local AI

StudyMate can work with a local model through Ollama.

That means the project doesn't fundamentally depend on a cloud AI API being available for every question.

With the appropriate model and hardware, the application can continue working locally.

 🔄 Model Freedom

One of my favorite parts of using an open approach is that the model isn't permanently locked into the application.

I can experiment with different models.

For example:

StudyMate
 │
 ├── Model A
 ├── Model B
 └── Model C

I can compare their performance and choose the one that works best for the specific use case.

🛠️ Control Over the AI Pipeline

Using an open approach also gives me control over more than just the prompt.

I can modify:

Retrieval

Chunking

Embeddings

Context size

Prompting

Model selection

RAG strategy

Local storage

Application behavior

That flexibility is important because StudyMate isn't trying to be a general-purpose AI assistant.

It's being built around one specific person's workflow.

 💰 Cost

Once the required model and software are available locally, there isn't a per-request API bill for every question.

For a student who might ask hundreds of questions while preparing for exams, this can make experimentation much more accessible.

 🔓 Open Innovation

For me, open innovation isn't just about using something that is free.

It's about being able to understand the system, experiment with it, change components, replace models, and build something that isn't completely dependent on one closed service.

That's what made the open approach particularly useful for StudyMate.

 What Makes StudyMate Different?

There are already countless AI study tools.

So I didn't want to build another generic chatbot.

The difference is the philosophy behind the project.

StudyMate was built for one person first.

I started with a real problem:

"I have too much study material and don't know how to revise all of it efficiently."

Then I built around that problem.

Instead of asking my friend to adapt to another AI tool, I wanted the tool to adapt to how my friend studies.

That led to features like:

"Explain this simply."

"Quiz me on this chapter."

"Give me the important points."

"Ask me viva questions."

"What should I revise again?"

The AI becomes a study partner rather than just a question-answering system.

Building It for a Real Friend

One of the most important parts of this challenge was choosing a real person instead of an imaginary target user.

I built StudyMate for [Friend's Name] because I knew the actual problem they were facing.

That changed how I approached the project.

Instead of asking:

"What features would look impressive?"

I asked:

"What would actually help my friend tomorrow?"

That led me to prioritize simple features that could immediately be useful during exam preparation.

 What My Friend Said

After showing the project to my friend, their reaction was:

"[ADD YOUR FRIEND'S ACTUAL FEEDBACK HERE]"

The most useful part of the feedback was that it helped me see the project from the perspective of someone who wasn't building the application.

It also gave me ideas for what I could improve next.

 Challenges I Faced

Building a local AI application wasn't completely straightforward.

One of the biggest challenges was balancing the size and capability of the model with the hardware available for local inference.

A larger model can potentially provide better responses, but it also requires more computational resources.

I also had to think about:

Document extraction

Chunk sizes

Retrieval quality

Context limits

Response speed

Local storage

Model selection

User experience

Another challenge was making sure that the AI actually used the uploaded study material rather than simply generating a generic answer.

That's where the RAG pipeline became important.

 What I Learned

This project taught me that building with AI isn't necessarily about finding the biggest model.

The more important question can be:

What problem are you solving, and where does AI actually need to be involved?

I also learned a lot about:

Local LLM inference

Open-weight models

RAG

Embeddings

Vector databases

Prompt engineering

Document processing

AI application architecture

Privacy-focused AI design

Most importantly, I learned that building something for a real person changes the entire development process.

 What's Next?

There are several things I want to add in future versions:

 📱 Mobile Version

A lightweight mobile version so my friend can revise from anywhere.

 🎙️ Voice Mode

Allow my friend to talk to StudyMate instead of typing.

 🧠 Better Personalization

Remember the topics my friend struggles with and automatically focus future quizzes on those areas.

 📈 Progress Tracking

Track:

Topics studied

Quiz performance

Weak areas

Revision frequency

Improvement over time

 📴 Better Offline Experience

Make the entire application capable of operating without an internet connection after the required models and dependencies have been installed.

 My Agent Session

[ADD YOUR DEVRELAY AGENT SESSION HERE]

I used an AI-assisted development workflow while building the project and documented the process through DevRelay.

 Prize Categories

Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

Additional partner categories:

[ADD APPLICABLE CATEGORY]

[ADD APPLICABLE CATEGORY]

 Final Thoughts

StudyMate started with a simple idea:

Build something that would actually help one person I know.

The project became an opportunity to explore something bigger too — what happens when an AI application doesn't have to depend entirely on a closed API.

Using open models gave me the ability to experiment with the model, change the AI pipeline, run inference locally, and keep the application centered around the user's data.

For me, that's the real value of open innovation.

Not just making AI available.

Making it possible for developers to understand it, modify it, and build it around the people they are actually trying to help.

Thanks for checking out my project! 🚀
