What Is FDRE? How Solar, Wind and BESS Deliver 24/7 Clean Power in India

Solar and wind are central to India's clean energy transition, but both are variable. Solar peaks around midday and falls away in the evening, while wind depends on location, weather and season. Factories, data centres and hospitals, however, need power at every hour.

This is why a new term keeps appearing in Indian renewable tenders: FDRE.

What is FDRE?

FDRE (Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy) is renewable power backed by storage and designed to meet a committed supply profile, so it behaves more like conventional generation. A related term is RTC (round-the-clock) renewable energy, where supply is delivered according to a defined profile through the day and night.

Tenders measure this with DFR (Delivered Firm Round-the-Clock), which shows how much of the committed supply is actually delivered.

Why it is trending

SECI's 1 GW round-the-clock tender was awarded at tariffs of about ₹5.25 to ₹5.26 per kWh, with a requirement of at least 90% DFR in peak hours.

According to Mercom India Research, India added 8.2 GWh of battery storage in H1 2026, taking cumulative installed capacity to 9.3 GWh by June 2026.

Ember estimates that around 2.1 TWh of renewable electricity was curtailed in FY2025-26, which makes the case for storage even stronger.

IESA projects commercial and industrial renewable capacity rising from 32 GW in 2025 to as much as 100 GW by 2032, with storage increasingly used for open access projects and diesel generator replacement.

How the pieces fit together

A simple daily cycle looks like this:

Daytime: solar generates power and surplus energy charges the battery.
Evening:solar output falls and the battery supplies stored energy.
-Night: wind, grid supply or stored energy keeps supporting the load.

An energy management system monitors generation, demand and battery state of charge, and decides when to charge, discharge or draw from the grid.

What battery storage (BESS) does

Energy shifting:stores surplus solar and releases it later.

Peak demand management: discharges during high-demand periods to reduce grid draw.

Renewable integration: narrows the gap between generation and consumption.

Backup power: supports loads during grid interruptions, depending on system size.

Grid support:helps with frequency and voltage regulation.

India's storage requirement

India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy cites a projected storage requirement of 82.37 GWh in 2026-27, rising to 411.4 GWh by 2031-32, including 236.22 GWh of BESS.

Choosing the right setup

The right configuration depends on the load profile, renewable resources, required backup duration and grid conditions:

Factory:** solar plus BESS
Data centre:** renewable power procurement, BESS, grid connection and backup infrastructure
Remote site:** solar, batteries and a backup generator in a microgrid

The next phase of the clean energy transition is not only about generating more solar or wind power. It is about integrating generation, storage, digital monitoring and grid infrastructure into one coordinated system.
