Good morning, good evening, or good night! I am Jamaica Sabrina, a first year student studying Computer Science at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa! Ever since Junior High School, my mind was already set on this program. From small curiosities, came the choice of choosing Computer Science as my future passion. I am writing this to share my worldview, why I chose this program, and why you should choose it, too!

  The Beginning And My Idol

Since I was little, I wrote little stories about characters I made up. At first, I dreamt of making my own animated show or comic using these stories. Then I found out that anyone persistent enough can make their own game, so I decided that games would be the medium I wanted to use to share my worlds.

Realistically, I should have known that games are made by really passionate people, but that did not really click in my head until I discovered how the game Stardew Valley was created. The game was created by only one person, Concerned Ape. When I first played the game, I was awestruck every time I was reminded that only one person was the sole creator of the game. Every pixel, every mechanic, every enemy, was all created by a single passionate person.

Concerned Ape studied Computer Science, and he, along with his game, was the catalyst that introduced me to the program I am in right now. His game made me more curious about how games are created, and it made me choose the strand ICT in Senior High School. In Senior High School, I was so excited to learn how to program, but the school I went to stopped offering classes about programming, when I became a senior. I got unlucky, but that would not stop me from achieving my dreams, so I studied on my own using tools I found online.

  How I Failed, Will Keep Failing, And Will Not Stop Trying

My goal ever since Junior High School is to make a game, but it is like the universe is always trying to stop me from reaching that goal. At first, I only tried making visual novels, using an app called Kocho, but that did not satisfy me since I can only make visual novels in that app. I wanted to make a game. I did not want to only write stories, so I tried to find another way to make something that did not seem too hard for me.

After that, I tried numerous apps that promised game creation without programming, but none of it felt enough. It felt like I cannot make what I have exactly in mind. That is when I discovered Godot. Godot is an open source game engine, but you would need to learn how to code. During this time, I was about to graduate Junior High School, and I thought that my school would teach programming in Senior High, so I decided to just try it.

I followed a few tutorials online about making games on Godot using GDScript. The first one I tried taught the viewer how to make the player walk. It was easy, but a bit slow, so when I understood the basics, I stopped learning for a bit and had a bit of fun and made a really quick platformer. Sadly, that game is already gone, because of an unfortunate canon event for me.

During Senior High School, I was pretty busy, so my dreams of making a game was paused for a while. I still watched a few videos about game making and tutorials, here and there, but I did not really create anything much that time. Then I was devastated when I learnt that the teacher in our school that taught programming left, so it would not be taught there anymore. Then when I finally had the free time to make a game, my canon event happened. My laptop, where I installed Godot, broke. That will not stop me, though.

  My First Game

When my laptop broke, I wanted to give up for a time. It felt like making games was just not for me. That still will not stop me, though. I found out that they made a mobile version of Godot, so I installed it. Although my phone is not the best since it often crashes, I still have hope in me that I can create a game. I joined a game jam to make a game, and made a game about escaping a cave using bombs.

This is a screenshot of Godot on my phone

Creating that game was the most fun I had in a while, and it made me realize that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, and I was right for not giving up, so I decided that Computer Science is the program for me. I still want to make games, and by choosing this program, I aim to create better games in the future.

  My First Lines of Code

When I was first starting, I followed tutorials, but I was too excited to learn the basics first. So in order for it to be interesting for me, I tried starting with something simple, but not too simple. So I learnt how to make controls for a player to walk in Godot using GDScript.

extends KinematicBody2D
var velocity = Vector2.ZERO

func _physics_process(delta):
    velocity.y += 7
    if Input. is_action_pressed("ui_right"):
        velocity.x = 150
    elif Input.is_action_pressed("ui_left"):
        velocity.x = -150
    else:
        velocity.x = 0

    if Input.is_action_just_pressed("ui_up"):
        velocity.y = -400

    velocity = move_and_slide(velocity)

  Why I Chose Computer Science, And Why I Think You Should, Too

It seemed fun! (and it is) You can learn programming, and if you are like me and your dream is to make a game, this program can be the foundation of reaching that dream.

Technology is booming, so learning more about tech can be helpful. Since technology is evolving, you would need foundational knowledge to understand how newer tech works.

There is a high demand for tech professionals in the Philippines. There are many opportunities for your career, because of this. Although it should be noted that positions in this field are also competitive.

It will teach you about problem-solving. Since you would need to fix errors everyday, problem-solving is a requirement, so by going into this program, it will exercise your skills in problem-solving.

  What do you think?

You made it to the end! Thank you!! If you are reading this, and you are someone in this field, can I ask for your thoughts? Do you think I will regret choosing CS? Do you have any advice for someone like me? I hope this was a good read for you, and I wish you a great day!
