Adding DRM to Native Video Apps and AWS Live Streaming: What to Validate

A protected video player has to work across several playback environments. Android, iOS, Apple TV and Samsung Smart TV do not share one player stack, and a live event adds packaging, key exchange, delivery and viewer authorization to the picture.

The DRM-X 6.0 Beta SDK previews offer one example of how to connect these pieces. This article looks at the integration points and the test results developers should distinguish from broader platform support.

 Start with the playback environment

The current SDK previews cover different native paths:

Platform

Integration path

What has been verified

Android phones and Android TV

Kotlin, Media3 and Widevine

Playback and protected download workflows on Samsung Android devices; the preview includes phone and Android TV samples.

iPhone and iPad

Swift, AVFoundation and FairPlay

Streaming and protected downloads on iPhone.

Apple TV

tvOS sample in the Apple SDK bundle

Protected on-demand playback and remote navigation on a physical Apple TV. The current sample focuses on streaming.

Samsung Smart TV

JavaScript SDK preview with Samsung AVPlay

Full HD on-demand playback and subtitle switching on a physical Samsung Smart TV.

These are useful starting points, but a sample app is not a compatibility guarantee for every device model, codec or playback feature. Before committing to a release, test the exact devices, subtitle formats, download rules and playback modes your audience will use.

 Map the live delivery path

The AWS Live DRM workflow described in the DRM-X 6.0 Beta connects three services:

AWS Elemental MediaLive encodes the live video.

AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 packages and encrypts it, using SPEKE 2.0 for DRM key exchange.

Amazon CloudFront delivers the packaged streams to viewers.

The workflow supports Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady delivery paths. Your application backend still needs to decide which authenticated viewer may access a stream. That decision should use your existing accounts, subscriptions, purchases or course entitlements rather than assuming that possession of a playback URL is sufficient authorization.

In testing reported for this Beta, a native iPhone successfully decoded a protected 4K live stream at up to 3840 × 2160. A Samsung Android device was used to test live playback and key rotation at 1080p. Those are separate results: the 4K iPhone test should not be read as a claim that 4K and key rotation were verified on every supported device.

 A practical validation checklist

For a real event, verify the end-to-end path with your own content and target hardware:

Confirm that each target device supports the chosen codec, DRM path and intended resolution.

Test authorized and unauthorized viewer accounts against your backend rules.

Check playback startup, subtitles and any protected download flow your app exposes.

Exercise the live stream for the event duration, including key rotation where configured.

Measure behavior under the network conditions your viewers are likely to encounter.

Actual playback resolution depends on the device, codec, network and content policy. DRM-X 6.0 is still in Beta, with ongoing releases and device testing. Customer SDK downloads require an active Professional or Enterprise subscription; public guides and selected evaluation resources are available without an SDK download.

The native app SDK guides and AWS live streaming tutorial provide the platform-specific starting points. The public player demo can help teams inspect the playback experience before beginning a native integration.

Disclosure: This article discusses a Haihaisoft product and was drafted with AI assistance.

Connecting an Existing LMS to Multi-DRM Playback: An Integration Pattern

An online course platform already knows whether a student can access a lesson. Adding protected video should use that decision instead of creating a second enrollment or purchase database inside the DRM system.

The DRM-X 6.0 Cloud Multi-DRM integration projects illustrate this pattern for WordPress, Moodle and custom web applications. Haihaisoft has published 15 public integration repositories that include LMS plugins, backend examples, reusable SDK packages and web player components.

 Keep authorization in your application

The standard playback flow uses a DRM-X Content ID:

Publish a protected video and register its DASH or HLS media URLs. With configured 1aicloud or supported S3 publishing, DRM-X can record those URLs during publication. If you host protected files on your own server, register their URLs first.

Map the video or lesson in your application to its DRM-X Content ID.

When a viewer requests playback, check your existing login, purchase, subscription or course enrollment rules on the backend.

If the viewer is authorized, request playback information. The player receives the registered media URL and a DRM License Token for the DRM-X playback workflow.

Once the media URLs are registered, the player page can resolve them from the Content ID. There is no need to hard-code a separate manifest URL into every lesson page. Keep the Site ID, Site Key and Access Key on the backend, following the relevant integration guide.

Choose a starting point that fits your stack

For WordPress education sites, separate repositories cover LearnPress, LearnDash, Tutor LMS, Sensei LMS and MasterStudy LMS. They use a shared DRM-X Universal Player plugin that is installed once per WordPress site. The Moodle repository includes activity and filter plugins, with instructions for installation, server configuration and adding protected content to a course.

For custom applications, the published examples cover PHP, Laravel, ASP.NET Core, ASP.NET Framework, Python/Django, Node.js/Express and Java/Spring Boot with Vue. Frontend teams can examine player components for React, Next.js and Vue. Reference bridges are also available for LTI, hosted LMS platforms and Shopify.

The backend projects include SDK packages where applicable, alongside source code and examples. Django and Laravel provide authorization extension points so that an existing business system can supply the access decision. Each repository includes README files in English, Simplified Chinese and Spanish.

 What to check before deployment

Start with one course and one protected video. Verify that a subscribed user can play it, that an unauthorized user cannot, and that the mapping remains correct when an enrollment expires or changes. Then test the specific browser, device and DRM path your audience will use.

The integration download center offers a complete package and individual platform downloads. You can also inspect the public GitHub repositories before choosing a sample.

The published code is open source under each repository's included license. DRM-X 6.0 Cloud Multi-DRM is a separate hosted service, and downloading the code does not include a service subscription. These website and LMS integrations are public previews, with continuing testing and improvements; available playback features depend on the DRM technology, browser, device and platform.
