AI-assisted tools such as Lovable and Replit can take a project surprisingly far.

A founder can move from an idea to a working interface, authentication flow, database connection or even a payment integration without following a traditional development process.

The difficult part often starts later.

Something stops working after deployment. A payment succeeds but the account is not updated. Authentication behaves differently in production. An integration works in a preview environment but fails on the live site.

At that point, another developer may need to take over or investigate the project.

The handoff becomes much easier when a few basic things are prepared first.

 1. Describe what should happen

Start with the expected behaviour.

For example:

“After a customer successfully completes payment, their account should be upgraded to the Pro plan.”

That is much more useful than simply saying:

“The payment feature is broken.”

A developer first needs to understand the intended behaviour before investigating why the current behaviour is different.

 2. Record what actually happens

Describe the result you currently see.

Include:

Visible error messages

Unexpected screens or redirects

Whether the issue happens every time

Whether it happens only after deployment

Whether it affects every user or only some users

Screenshots or screen recordings can also help when they do not contain private customer information.

 3. Write reproducible steps

A reproducible issue is much easier to investigate.

For example:

Open the pricing page.

Select the Pro plan.

Complete the payment.

Return to the application.

The account still displays the Free plan.

These steps give the developer a clear starting point.

If you cannot reproduce the problem consistently, say that too. Intermittent behaviour is useful information.

 4. List the services connected to the project

AI-built applications often involve several services outside the original builder.

Your list might include:

Lovable or Replit

Supabase or Firebase

GitHub

Stripe

Vercel or another hosting provider

Authentication providers

Email services

External APIs

This does not need to be a detailed architecture document.

The goal is simply to show which systems may be involved.

 5. Share access safely

Eventually, a developer may need access to the repository, deployment logs, database configuration or another service.

Do not paste passwords, API secrets or production credentials into public discussions or ordinary project documents.

Instead, determine which access is actually required and share it through an appropriate private method.

It is also useful to remove access again when the engagement ends.

 6. Separate facts from assumptions

This can save a surprising amount of debugging time.

For example:

Fact:
“The payment appears as successful in Stripe.”

Assumption:
“Supabase must be causing the problem.”

The assumption may eventually be correct, but it should not become the starting conclusion without evidence.

Write down what you actually observed and keep theories separate.

 7. Define the outcome you want

A developer needs to know whether the goal is to:

Repair one specific bug

Finish an incomplete MVP

Make an existing feature production-ready

Prepare the application for launch

Add an integration

Move the project to another hosting environment

Take over ongoing development

Those are very different assignments.

Defining the desired outcome helps determine what investigation is needed before development begins.

A good handoff does not need to be complicated

You do not need a perfect technical specification before asking a developer for help.

For many projects, a useful starting handoff contains:

Expected behaviour

Current behaviour

Reproduction steps

Relevant platforms and services

Screenshots or logs where appropriate

A clear desired outcome

Safe access when it becomes necessary

AI-assisted development changes how projects are started, but many of the fundamentals of debugging and software handoff remain the same.

The clearer the evidence and expected outcome, the easier it is for another developer to understand what should happen next.

I work with Fix My AI Build, a specialist service delivered by Keshav Infotech that helps repair, finish and launch existing AI-built web applications and SaaS projects.
