[Event] Panel Climate Change, Tokenization, and the Carbon Market

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the first day of BB Digital Week, the largest innovation and technology event in the Midwest, participating in the panel "Climate Change, Tokenization, and the Carbon Market." I spoke as a tokenization and blockchain specialist from BlockC (https://blockc.com.br/).

In the panel, we discussed technologies that promise to make the market more transparent, honest, and, more valuable. The use of AI, machine learning, georeferencing, and tokenization has the potential to fulfill this promise, yet caution and deep reflection are needed to ensure value is actually delivered.

At the end of the panel and throughout the week, several people suggested that I summarize and share these discussions with the community. It seemed like a good excuse to return to writing, this time on my website, Corp Insider, where I hope to maintain an active blog on crypto, technology, and innovation.

So, let’s get to the main points, with some of the highlights I shared during the panel.

How to ensure value creation through tokenization

Digital assets, whether blockchain-native or derived from tokenization (like RWAs and similar), tend to exhibit high liquidity, traceability, automation (via smart contracts), and low operational costs.

During the panel, we discussed how combining AI with georeferencing can generate data used in theses, typically in a PDD (Project Development Document) for carbon credit projects. By using blockchain, we can also achieve added value through traceability, ensuring data origin and integrity.

Different AI models may yield varying results on the same forest area; therefore, documenting the data acquisition and auditing process becomes an intriguing case for tokenization. It’s not merely about recording the process or the origin of data but capturing different versions of responses these models produce, strengthening the methodology behind the asset creation pre-tokenization.

Opportunities we can create through tokenization of environmental assets

What really adds value to tokenizing an environmental asset? There are various possibilities. We should also consider the business model to identify specific ways to leverage the technology. However, we explored a few concrete opportunities during the panel:

Better distribution of environmental assets, enabling access for different clients and networks (legacy systems and blockchain networks).
The possibility of replicating bundles of operations, much like a rollup, for official registries, both international and national, such as Verra and Cetip of B3.
The use of tokens in smart contract automations, enabling the development of derivatives, structured operations, royalty systems for environmental service payments, and the creation of financial products linked to investment and credit.
Ease of DvP (Delivery versus Payment) operations using the asset.
Increased trust through the inclusion of data, evidence, and information that characterize environmental assets in their digital form.

The tokenization of environmental assets can open a range of new possibilities. One practical example we discussed was the project by B3 in partnership with ACX (AirCarbon Exchange) Brazil—of which BlockC is a shareholder—that uses blockchain technology to establish a public registry for carbon projects, including the use of the Brazilian PSA Carbonflor methodology, created by ECCON Soluções Ambientais for Votorantim Reserves.

Essential considerations for carbon tokenization projects

In tokenization projects, the purpose must be questioned before any implementation begins. Are we tokenizing to meet internal demands, perhaps for traceability and process control, or are we aiming to create real and tangible value? The answer to this question can determine the type of legacy the project will leave behind and the risk of generating technical debt along the way. For technologies still building their foundational structures —like blockchain and tokenization — every choice, every commitment, constructs a foundation that can either become an advantage for adaptability or a maze of complexity with future limitations.

One must consider whether the effort to make the implementation “future-proof”—integrated with emerging networks and technologies, whether regulated (CBDCs and DREX are on their way) or in DeFi environments — truly generates long-term value. Interoperability and durability are not virtues in themselves; they must serve a concrete, viable purpose. Perhaps, instead of aiming for a definitive solution from the outset, it would be wiser to design a technical plan that allows for updates and adaptations as the landscape transforms.

And here is a crucial point: tokenization itself does not create rights, nor does it establish ownership in the legal sense. Any initiative that seeks to add value through tokens must clearly link to current legal sources, such as laws and formal contracts, which are as ancient and solid as the very concept of property. A smart contract may automate operations, but the legal foundation still lies within the traditional contract, at least on Brazil.

Na semana passada tive a oportunidade de participar logo no primeiro dia do BB Digital Week, o maior evento de inovação e tecnologia do Centro Oeste, fazendo uma participação no painel "Mudanças Climáticas, tokenização e o mercado de carbono", falando como especialista de tokenização e blockchain da BlockC.

Durante o painel, discutimos sobre as tecnologias que prometem tornar o mercado mais íntegro, transparente e mais valioso. O uso de IA, machine learning, georreferenciamento e tokenização tem o potencial para alcançar essa promessa, mas é necessário cuidado e muita ponderação para garantir a entrega de valor.

No final do painel e ao longo da semana, algumas pessoas sugeriram que eu resumisse e compartilhasse as discussões com a comunidade. Era uma boa desculpa para voltar a escrever, dessa vez no meu site, Corp Insider, onde espero manter um blog ativo sobre cripto, tecnologia e inovação.

Então, vamos ao ponto central, com alguns dos destaques que expus durante o painel.

Como garantir ganho de valor na inovação com tokenização

Ativos digitais, sejam nativos de blockchain ou derivados de tokenização (RWA e similares), tendem a apresentar alta liquidez, rastreabilidade, automação (via contratos inteligentes) e baixos custos operacionais.

No painel, utilizamos o exemplo da obtenção de dados usando a junção da IA com o georreferenciamento. Eles tipicamente serão utilizados em teses – como um PDD para projeto gerador de créditos de carbono - e usando blockchain, existe a oportunidade de ganho de valor com rastreabilidade, assegurando a origem e integridade dos dados.

Modelos de IA diferentes podem trazer resultados variados sobre uma mesma área florestal; assim, a documentação do processo de obtenção e auditoria de dados se torna um caso interessante para tokenização, não apenas gravando o processo e a garantia de origem dos dados, mas as diferentes versões de resposta desses modelos, fortalecendo a metodologia utilizada na geração dos ativos, posterior à tokenização.

Oportunidades que podemos criar a partir da tokenização de ativos ambientais

O que realmente agrega valor ao se tokenizar um ativo ambiental? Há diversas possibilidades, deve-se também considerar o modelo de negócio de para chegar a formas especificas de se explorar a tecnologia, mas exploramos no painel algumas oportunidades concretas:

Melhor distribuição dos ativos ambientais, permitindo acesso a diferentes clientes e redes(Sistemas legados e redes blockchain).
A possibilidade de replicar pacotes de operações quase como um rollup para registros oficiais, tanto internacionais quanto nacionais, como os da Verra e da Cetip da B3.
O uso de tokens em automações com contratos inteligentes, possibilitando o desenvolvimento de derivativos, operações estruturadas, sistemas de royalties para pagamentos de serviços ambientais e a criação de produtos financeiros vinculados a investimento e crédito.
Facilidade para operações de DvP (Delivery versus Payment) usando o ativo.
Aumento de confiança com a inclusão de dados e evidências que caracterizam os ativos ambientais em suas formas digitais.

A tokenização de ativos ambientais pode abrir um leque de novas possibilidades. Um exemplo prático que discutimos foi o projeto da B3 em parceria com a ACX (AirCarbon Exchange) Brasil – empresa da qual a BlockC é acionista – que utiliza tecnologia blockchain para estabelecer um registro público para projetos de carbono, incluindo o uso da metodologia brasileira PSA Carbonflor, criada pela ECCON Soluções Ambientais para as Reservas Votorantim.

Cuidados Essenciais em Projetos de Tokenização de Carbono

Em projetos de tokenização, o propósito precisa ser questionado antes de qualquer execução. Estamos tokenizando para responder a demandas internas, talvez para rastreabilidade e controle de processos, ou buscamos um valor efetivo e tangível no mercado? A resposta a essa pergunta pode determinar o tipo de legado que esse projeto deixará e o risco de criar uma dívida técnica ao longo do caminho. Para tecnologias que mal começam a firmar os alicerces e implementações padronizadas – como blockchain e tokenização –, cada escolha, cada compromisso, constrói uma base que pode se tornar em uma vantagem no momento de se adaptar ou um labirinto de complexidade que é uma desvantagem cheia limitações futuras.

É preciso ponderar se o esforço necessário para tornar a implementação "à prova do futuro", integrada a redes e tecnologias emergentes, sejam elas reguladas – CBDCs e o DREX estão chegando – ou em ambientes DeFi, realmente gera valor no longo prazo. A interoperabilidade e a durabilidade de uma solução não são, por si só, virtudes; devem servir a um propósito concreto e viável. Talvez, em vez de buscar uma solução definitiva desde o início, seja mais prudente desenhar um plano de evolução tecnológica que permita atualizações e adaptações conforme o cenário se transforma.

Por último, há um ponto crucial que precisa ser ressaltado. A tokenização em si não cria direitos, tampouco estabelece propriedade no sentido legal. Qualquer iniciativa que almeje agregar valor por meio de tokens precisa estabelecer ligação clara com as atuais fontes de direito , como leis e contratos formais, que são tão antigos e sólidos quanto o próprio conceito de propriedade. O contrato inteligente pode automatizar operações, mas a fundação jurídica ainda pertence ao contrato tradicional. No painel usamos o exemplo da tokenização de imóveis para ilustrar essa noção.
