Web Developer Roadmap 2024 | Step-By-Step Guide

The web development journey is not easy. This is true in our personal lives and this rings true in Web Development as well. You'll fail, rise again. You fall again, rise again.

This is demonstrated in the life of Chris Sean. I've been following his videos. I got busy with so many things for almost a year (things important to me of course). I tried another path (Data Analyst). But I think web development is the path that I want to pursue. It is this skill that I keep on coming back to.

I was reminded by an email from Michael that I am one of the Dev Mods. My job pushes me to learn JavaScript and Python more to be effective in what I am doing as required by my present role.

So I am taking this roadmap from Chris, though not entirely, since I have already learned some of the skills he mentioned. I'll continue the Odin | Foundations course that I started. It's time to make use of the skills I gained and build more projects. I've said this before but hey! This is life. We must press on by the grace of God!

Another YT channel that I love is from James Quick, check out his latest video on how to actually be a developer in 2024.

ASK Great Questions

"Good questions save time. Bad questions waste time. Bad questions create unnecessary back-and-forth conversations, which create frustration and conflict. People that ask bad questions get frustrated because they can’t get help, and people that are trying to help get frustrated because answering bad questions is so damn frustrating." - Gordon Zhu

While taking the Foundations Course on Odin Project, I was led to read a great article by Gordon Zhu Founder at https://watchandcode.com on How to be great at asking coding questions.

It is really a helpful one and it corrected how I asked questions before in Stack Overflow and got a downvote. It was such an embarassing experience, but I learned a lot! Here are the process that are worth remembering when asking questions according to Gordon Zhu:

Understand the code to the best of your ability.

Clearly describe the problem.

Provide the code that illustrates the problem.

Make sure the code you’re sharing can reproduce the problem.

Format your code consistently.

Check yourself for typos.

Explain what you did to troubleshoot the problem.

Explain what you think the problem might be.

Proofread your question.

Send updates and remember this will not be your last question.

I hope it helps as it helped me a lot. Happy Coding!

Get A Dev Job # 3

It's December! It's been a busy two months but I am still pressing on!

I'm so glad that I sustained my commitment to consistently code (with some miss due to emergencies). Here's my Github profile now.

That 5 days break in November was when I attended a conference, but the rest was consistent coding. I maintained the website that I created for our school/seminary and added other features to help students.
Here's the website: lovegreek.

I was also able to apply the features that I stated here. That is the ability to change the background. It worth celebrating for me (maybe not that much for others), but I learned to celebrate every milestones.

I still have other features in mind that I like to implement, but I enjoy its present state. I will still continue my journey until I get that web developer job by God's grace.

As a Christian, I also write blogs about the goodnews. If you are interested, please read here: The Glorious Gospel

Get A Dev Job # 2

Last month, I posted about restarting my web dev journey with a clear goal to get a full time front-end web developer job.

With consistency and dedication, I was able to press on! Here's a screenshot of my Github contribution:

I faced challenges and trials that almost caused me to give up again. But hey! I overcame them all by the grace of God. I coded and labor to understand difficult concepts sometimes with little amount of time daily.

I am inspired by difference posts here and from daily.dev. Most of all, my family is my motivation and my responsibility to provide for them by God's grace.

There are still javaScript concepts that I am trying to get around my head. But I'll press on. I created projects, though not yet complete, based on the concepts that I learned from Florin Pop's tutorial on YouTube.

Here are some projects that I created. They are few and simple but I worked hard with the ability that I have and skills that I've learned.

View here.

++++++++

This coming month, I like to create more and improve the apps that I created. Please, be patient with my posts. And I would appreciate comments that would really help me improve as a web developer and programmer.

As a Christian, I also write blogs about the goodnews. If you are interested, please read here: The Glorious Gospel

I Used JavaScript to Help My Students

So I just completed a webapp in order to help my students in reviewing our vocabulary lessons.

I learned more by building project and building this vocabulary review app to help my students is both exciting and challenging. I love how they are able to use it and enjoy its features. As for me, my skills grow as a web developer while helping them.

I'd ever thought that I would be able to create this simple app!

This webapp contains the following features:

It loads every new Greek Vocabulary.

They get to choose which vocabulary lessons they need to review.

The vocabulary review is challenging since it is randomized.

They can also mark a vocabulary thay they missed in order to review it again at the end of the initial review.

They can show and hide the vocabulary's meaning to check if the answer.

In creating this, I learned and almost mastered:

Event handling

Manipulating objects and arrays using different methods

Improved in understanding the logic of JavaScript functions.

Helper functions

ES6 syntax

Manipulating checkbox using Javascript

You want to see the code? I know it is a bit messy and I want to improve a lot. Please, check it here:. Here's the link to the webapp.

I am determined to improved more and get better at programming so I would want to add more features to this in the future. Feel free to recommend, please!

As a Christian, I also write blogs about the goodnews. If you are interested, please read here: The Glorious Gospel

Learn Through Projects 1: Event Timer

As I mentioned last week, I was going through Florin Pop's tutorial on YouTube. and I have completed the first project. In order to keep what I learned, I built it myself with looking at the tutorial and added some features. I am also planning to add more features, but I guess I will have to learn new concepts (as for me). Nonetheless, I'll put it here for your suggestions.

It is a simple one. But I am learning a lot. It has no background image yet, as I am planning to add a feature that would allow the user to set his own.

Features added:

Ability to set the name of the event

Ability to change the date of the event

Control section that can be toggled (show/hide)

Features/Task for future development:

Ability to change background

Set multiple timers where a user can choose from his timer which one he would like to broadcast

Publish to chrome as a web extension.

I am motivated to complete this project as I learn by building project so that it can be used for our church events.

Here is the github page.

As a Christian, I also write blogs about the goodnews. If you are interested, please read here: The Glorious Gospel

Get A Dev Job # 1

I want to begin my journey again. I learned to code July 2020, however, due to other important stuff that made me busy, family (had our first baby), church, ministries, and schooling, I was not available to keep it consistent. Nevertheless, because of my web development side projects I was able to get a long-term job as a software consultant. But now, I wanted to pursue a web development, software engineering or programming job.

I restarted my journey last week following through Florin Pop's tutorial on YouTube. But this time, for every project I'll do my best to create it on my own and not simply follow every lines of code. I'll commit to code a minimum of focused 1 hour/day code except Sunday (I am at church on Sundays).

I got encouraged by a single tweet from a random person who checked my github profile. The message motivated me again.

Here's a screenshot of my Github profile and contribution. Yes, It's look messy, but I'll do better. All for the glory of God!

May God bless us all!

Tips for Getting Your First Developer Job

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

I am sharing 5 Specific Tips for Getting Your First Developer Job by James Quick.

Engage in community - being part of a community is impactful. Twitter as an example is where you can connect with other devs. I am currently connected to a Facebook community with self-taught programmers and slack channel with Clever Programmer students. Build your network. Build your career.

Create BOMB portfolio projects - stand out not only through your resume but by creating BOMB projects (it proves your passion and demonstrates your ability to create one project from start to finish). Resume is just bunch of words, your portfolio project is the proof.

Reach out to people - ask advice from tenure or senior devs. It never hurts to ask. Ask advice from people with specific job that you wanted to get. Start making connects and learn the job, companies and roles you wanted to work in.

Create content - The best way to learn is to teach! Be visible!

Practice confidence - Talk about yourself confidently! Feel really good of what you are and what you have accomplished. Pay attention to how you talk about yourself, what you build, and what you do.

I learned a lot here. Hope you'll do too!

To God be the glory!

Can I Write A Clean Code?

I have been having difficulties in writing clean code. But the series of posts in Medium helped a lot. So here are the links to the posts and my takeaways that are worth sharing from part 1, part 2, part 3, & part 4 of the Writing Clean Code series by Logeshvar L.

Avoid redundant information. E.g: UserWithNameAndAge is more redundant and is very lengthy. Prefer User

Follow the casing conventions according to the language you’re using. Example: camelCase in Java/Javascript, snake_case in Python and so on.

Be consistent in naming your variables/methods. Example: Avoid using getAge(), fetchName(), retrieveMail(). Instead, be consistent and name them getAge(), getName(), and getMail().

Avoid slang, unclear abbreviations and disinformation (indicative of wrong data structure in the variable name, etc).

Avoid comments that say the obvious or those which are misleading.

Never comment out code, just remove.

Use comments only when you want to provide licensing information, warnings or there is a need to provide API documentation.

Use comments when code is difficult to grasp at a single sight and it would make it easier by providing some comments as explanations (e.g: regex).

Properly format the code by adding blank lines to separate unrelated concepts and grouping similar/ related concepts together.

Do not write an unreadably long line of code or name in a single line. Split them into multiple lines and use precise short names.

Write functions with a minimum number of parameters.

Keep your functions simple to read and understand without writing 100s of lines of code inside a single function. Instead, split into multiple short functions.

Consider splitting of functions, but be sensible.

Increase reusability and make code DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself).

Try not to mix different levels of abstraction in the function.

Avoid unexpected side effects.

Check if your function makes unit testing easier.

These are the takeaways that you can pretty much read in the blog posts. After reading the posts. I hope we can all answer the question above that Yes! We can write clean code with practice and tips provided in the blog posts.

I encourage you to read each post as he provides helpful examples and detailed steps/tips to implement writing clean code.

I'll surely get back to these posts as I write codes.

To God be the glory!

How to fix domain change error

Have you ever tried updating you website domain name then got an issue where the domain name is changed but you cannot log-in on your website? For example, you're changing your website domain name in the WordPress general settings from www.yourdev.com to www.yourdeveloper.com. The site domain has been changed but you cannot access it and all that you are seeing is the sample image below:

Today, we'll learn how to retrieve your domain name after changing it in WordPress general settings. Note that this does not require database or PHP knowledge, and I am indebted to Webdev Maestro for this resolution.

Log-in to your website CPanel.

Then go to the file manager under files section.

Next is to find the wp-config.php file in the main page of your public manager. If it is not there, you can find it in the public_html folder.

Right click on the wp-config.php file, then hit view. Then locate define DB Name and take note of the particular name.

Next, go back to your your CPanel and under databases click phpMyAdmin.

On the side bar, click on the plus "+" sign beside the name of the database that you have taken note earlier on the wp-config.php to collapse the options.

Then click on the name of your databases suffixed with "_options".

You'll see that the siteurl and home have the domain name that you are changing your domain to which also gives you an error. Now, our goal is to change siteurl and home variables.

Click on the pencil icon on the left to edit each variables.

Then you'll get to the next page so that you can change the website URL to the old one. Make sure that you are updating it to the initial domain name that you have before changing it.

Make sure on the options down the page you have the settings below (save and then go back to previous page):

Do the same for the home variable. If you can't find it on the first page then go to the next.

Once done, close the current tab, then go to the initial domain name and there you go, you'll have it back. Congratulations! You are able to retrieve your website and domain.

Do you have the same issue?
Let me know what other fix resolution you have for this error.
