Creating, testing and Deleting Policies

Search for 'policy' in the search menu bar on azure portal.
Select the 'assignments' blade.
Select Assign Policy.
Define the Policy then add. For this tutorial we'll be creating a policy that requires resources to have a Tag.
You can optionally add exclusions and create a description for the policy.
Set Tag name and Value in parameters.
Create the Policy.
It should look similar to the image below if successful.
Let us test the Policy created by creating a storage account.
I will purposefully omit the assigning of tag in the storage account to test if the Policy will work.
As shown below, the Policy prevents the storage account from being deployed because it does not have the specified tag.
Now I will try to create the storage account again but this time I will include the Tag.
As shown below, the deployment of the storage account was successful.
To delete the Policy, simply go back to the policy created in the 'assignments' blade and click delete assignment from the drop down.

Assigning and Removing Resource Locks in Azure

We'll be using an already created resource group to create the resource locks.
Select the 'locks' option.
Click on add.
Add the necessary parameters i.e name, lock type and optionally a description note.
It should look like the image below.
We can test the lock by trying to delete a resource within the resource group. I will try to delete a storage account created earlier
The storage account cannot be deleted because of the resource lock placed on the resource group.
To remove the resource lock simply go back to the locks option in the resource group and click delete on the lock.

How to view, assign and remove roles in Azure

Login to azure portal.
You can either create a new resource group or use an already created one. For the intents of this tutorial I will use an already created one
Select Access control.
Click on add, then select add role assignment.
Search for "Virtual Machine Contributor" and click on next.
Select the member you wish to assign the role to. Optionally, you can add a description.
Click Review and Assign.
Select Activity log to view the timeline of roles created.
To remove a role, Go back to Access control, Select the role you wish to remove and click remove.

Creating a key vault and adding a Secret in Azure

Login to azure portal.
Search for Key vault on the search menu.
Click on create.
Set the required parameters i.e name, region etc.
Click on Review and Create.
After confirming that there are no issues with the key vault, click create.
Now to create the secret, go to the newly created key vault and select secrets from the objects blade.
Click on Generate/Import.
Set the name of the secret and its contents.
There are optional settings that could be adjusted if you wish to do so.
Click create.

How to create Resource Groups in Azure Portal

Login to azure portal.
Using the search menu, type in Resource Group.
Click on create as shown below.
Input the required parameters for the Resource Group such as;
Region etc.
Click on Review and Create. This takes to you the review page.
Click on create and wait for the deployment process to finish, after which the Resource Group should have been created

Creating A Virtual Machine Using CLI in Azure

1. The first step would be logging into your Azure portal account.

2. The second step would be opening the opening the command line interface on the portal.

3. For the purpose of this particular session, we will be using Powershell instead of Bash. Use the dropdown button to switch to Powershell.

4. After switching to Powershell, it should look like similar to the image below.

5. Create a Resource Group using the syntax below.
New-AzResourceGroup -Name 'myCoolerRg' -Location 'EastUS'

6. Create the virtual machine using the syntax below.

New-AzVm `
-ResourceGroupName "myCoolerRg" `
-Name "myVMps" `
-Location "WEST US" `
-VirtualNetworkName "myVnetPS" `
-SUbnetName "mySubnetPS" `
-SecurityGroupName "myNSGPS" `
-PublicIpAddressName "myPublicIpPS"

7. Notice that the code snippet specified above is a multi-line code. This is achieved with the use of the backtick symbol

8. After running the code, you will be prompted to enter the username and password that will later be used to access the virtual machine.

9. Ensure that the password created follows the guidelines specified below otherwise it may not work.

10. After inputting the username and password, you should get the prompt below signifying that the Virtual Machine is being created.

11. Once successfully created, you will see a message indicating the creation of the Virtual Machine and the attributes that you had earlier specified.
