I connected with Jakob through Bluesky. He runs FakeMayo.com, a platform that features stories of entrepreneurs and how they acquired their first 100 users.

At the time of being featured, Habit Card was in its pre-registration phase.

Benefit of being featured is the creation of high-quality backlinks, which enhance visibility and SEO.

How I Gained 100+ Users Through Pre-Registrations for My Habit Tracker App

After two weeks of beta testing, I launched pre-registrations for my habit tracker app, Habit Card, on the Google Play Store. Pre-registration is a great way to generate interest and build anticipation before the official launch, and I wanted to make the most of it.

To incentivize users to sign up, I offered an exclusive deal: a 100% discount on the Lifetime plan, valued at $15, for all pre-registered users.

Thanks to this strategy, I was able to onboard 152 users through pre-registration alone. These users now form the initial base for my app, providing valuable feedback and creating momentum as I move toward scaling and promoting the app further.

Key Takeaways:

Offer a strong incentive: The free Lifetime plan added a clear value proposition that encouraged users to act quickly.

Build anticipation: Pre-registration helped create excitement around the app before its official launch.

Engage with early users: This initial group of users is crucial for feedback and word-of-mouth promotion.

Pre-registration proved to be a win-win, as it helped me gain a solid user base while giving my audience something valuable in return. If you're launching an app, I highly recommend incorporating a pre-registration strategy with a compelling offer to attract early interest.

How I Turned My Habit Tracker Idea into Reality in 28 Days

The first step was creating wireframes for the concept. Once I had the basics down, I designed the Habit Card logo in Figma and moved on to designing the home screen, including the card.

The next day, I jumped straight into development. I chose to build Habit Card using native Kotlin instead of cross-platform tools. I wanted my app to feel natural and intuitive, deeply integrated with the platform, ensuring a smooth and refined experience for everyday use. Plus, this helped me keep the app size under 4MB.

One of the biggest challenges was building complex widgets since Android widgets don’t support regular UI components.

I documented my daily progress on X (@jithin_jude) if you're curious to see the journey!

How I came up with Habit Card

Small Habits, Big Changes — Start Today!

I’ve tried many habit trackers to manage my daily routines, but none completely satisfied my requirements. I wanted a tracker that combined a GitHub-style contribution graph with the ability to mark habits as completed directly from notifications and a home screen widget for seamless tracking.

Although some trackers with GitHub-inspired designs exist, they lack the seamless integration with notifications and widgets that I envisioned. So I build one for me: Habit Card.

Why does Habit Card stand out?

Focus and Simplicity: Habit Card offer a straightforward, intuitive approach to help you start and stick to the habits you care about. The design makes it easier for users to focus on one habit at a time, reducing cognitive overload.

Creator-Friendly Design: Inspired by GitHub’s heatmap design, Habit Card caters especially to creators and entrepreneurs.

Habit Health: The app prioritizes habit health. Users can track their habits at their own pace while maintaining a clear visual understanding of their progress.

Lightweight and Privacy-Focused: The app is under 4MB and gives you the option to turn off analytics.
