This is me, I'm a "developer"

  This is me

Look out 'cause here I come. I'm not scared to be seen. I make no apologies, this is me
I'm Jasper, a 33-year-old developer from the Netherlands.

Web development is my hobby, and it also happens to be the way I make a living. Learning new stuff and mostly understanding how stuff works is what makes me tick. A lot of developers are like that I guess. So why did I quote the word developer in the title?

  My struggles

For a while now I have been feeling like I'm not showing my full potential and that feeling sucks. I always felt apart from the rest of the developers I've studied/worked with. Make no mistake, I can surely hold my own in a programming contest. I'm definitely a good programmer, but that's not all I am and, as I realized, not the only thing I want to be. I'm trying to break out of the standard developer role, and it is hard. Recently the company I work for was taken over by a bigger company. This can be a good thing, opportunities to grow and too finally break out of the traditional developer role. Up until now a lot changed in the company, all sorts of collaborations are starting to happen, except in the development department. I'm convinced developers can really make a difference and I think it would be a shame if they could never show their true potential because they are overlooked too easily.

  The developer stigma

Companies that have a development team often recognize their potential in writing code but (some?/ most?) developers can be so much more than that! I for example would love to apply my skills in other areas than just development. Invite me to a brainstorm about whatever, and I'm certain I can wow people with my ability to think outside the box and research new stuff in any area. The only problem is that developers often get overlooked. Sure I'd make mistakes when doing something I've never done (doesn't everyone) but developers can learn, and they learn fast!

  Make a change

A lot of developers showed that applying the basic skill set of a developer in other areas works and I think we'll see a lot more of this shift in mentality in the coming years. I certainly hope this article can help people see the full potential of this kind of developer. I'm still struggling to become the developer I want to be. It is not easy to break through the developer stereotype, but I try to do what I can to change it and that's all I can do right now.

  You're the best

Here at dev.to I feel heard. I think most of the blogging developers are a lot like me. This is the reason why I post this story here and only here. It isn't the positive story you are used from me, but I'd like to hear from all of you if you've also experienced something like this. In the meantime I'll keep moving forward to become the developer I want to be. I want to turn this into something positive and show everyone developers can do so much more than writing code!

If you're reading this: thanks for hearing me out 😘

  The ternary operator

It's a delight to use them but should we use them as much as possible? what do you think about the next example? ✔||🤢

H = (C == 0 ? null :

    V == g ? (b - r) / C + 2 :
             (r - g) / C + 4
    );

  nested ternary operators ✔||🤢?

❤: Commit (I'd commit something like this)
🏷: Vomit (we all know unicorns don't vomit)
Function currying

Hard to put vomit and curry together in a title, but I had to ask 😁

I see this posted a lot on dev.to, function currying, but I find it not that readable myself TBH. What do you think?
And please tell me why 😊

  Almost weekend!😎

But first another iconic developers 😊

Special thanks: @theowlsden
and @technoglot
🦄

Feel free to join and show your creativity!

Let's make the next one a monkey edition (🙈🙉🙊). 😎

  🤷‍♂️ The WOMM developer

Works On My Machine is their go to answer. While this is true (mostly) they usually forgot to commit the changes in their package.json (or something else that breaks the code outside their own machine...).

  Habitat

Their own machine. The rest of the machines are not good enough for them. 😲

  Best to ask for

What dependencies you're missing when his code doesn't work, again. 😅

  Needs work on

Own up to their mistakes, keep calm when installing something new and do it the proper way. 😊

  🐙 The unfortunate full-stack

They know the whole stack of a company. Not because they want to work as a full-stack, but because they have a small team.

  Habitat

You find them mostly in start-ups and scaleups. But you can also find them in specific departments of a mid-size company.

  Best to ask for

Advice on how you can implement a piece of logic. They most probably did something similar once upon a time. Oh, and about the frontend, ask them the basics.

  Needs works on

Delegating tasks. If they have a small team, they need to share the responsibilities, not take everything on themselves.

https://dev.to/theowlsden/comment/1dicj

  🤑 The Client's Butler

That person in the team, (sometimes a team lead) who's motto is: "The client is KING!". They tend to be very client-centric and say NO to whatever brings no value to the client. All else be damned, including the developer experience. 😢

  Habitat

This kind of developer is mostly found lurking around stakeholders and clients to obtain their wishes.

  Best to ask for

What the client wants, they now every single wish by heart.

  Needs work on

Accepting developer experience is king in getting the client what they wish for in time and with joy! 😍

https://dev.to/technoglot/comment/1denl

Soooo that's three again 😁

Looking forward to your input

## 💻 [name]

#### Habitat

#### Best to ask for

#### Needs works on

  It's Tuesday!

Time for a new ✔||🤢 Commit or Vomit! This time it is about using [].some(check ⇒ !check). What do you think of the following code?

The new iconic developers is here!

Thanks @technoglot
, @theowlsden
and @nefomemes
Keep it up!

I hope there will be three more in the comments so we can continue this list 😊😊

Maybe some ideas:
😴🤐🤒😵🥴🐱‍👤🙈🙉🙊

  🏹 The Bug Buster

Name says it all: that person on the team that is a master in bug squashing. No pesticides needed: their eyes are enough. No bug is safe from them!

  Habitat

They live inside IDE's and have static code analysis for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Code quality is their utmost priority!

  Best to ask for

Advice on how to exterminate bugs. They can sniff them from miles away! 👃🏻

  Needs works on

Working on actual features! Squashing bugs is important, but we've got a product to ship! 📦These features won't take care of themselves!

Based on this comment

  🎅 The tools Santa

Do you have a problem you don't know how to solve? They have a tool for you.

  Habitat

Your everyday office, forums, anywhere really. If you have a question, they are there to answer with a tool (a new software, library, etc).

  Best to ask for

An over-engineered solution to a problem. They have experience with a whole lot of tools.

  Needs works on

Tone it down a bit. Not everything needs to be solved with a new tool.

Based on this comment

  😳 The branch breaker

Look out! This developer will break your branch. A mistake like running git reset HEAD when they should have used git reset --soft HEAD is not uncommon..

  Habitat

Mostly found behind a terminal looking like 😥. Searching for a fix for the made mistakes, hoping no one will ever find out what they did.

  Best to ask for

Helping you fix git mistakes, they’ve been there and know how to get you out!

  Needs works on

Admitting their mistakes instead of (trying to) cover them up.

Based on this comment

Leave yours in the comments!

  🤓🦄🚫

Three more developer types! Thnx
@annervisser
and @keyboardsamurai
Please keep it going and make it even longer! 😁

Leave your iconic developer type in the comments!

## 💻 [name]

#### Habitat

#### Best to ask for

#### Needs works on

  🤓 The perfectionist

Spends their time making everything perfect, re-usable and beautiful. Sometimes forgets what they were actually supposed to be making.

  Habitat

Can be seen staring at the same code file for hours. Usually has a perfect development environment with all the best tools.

  Best to ask for

Advice on how to clean up or generalize your code. Can also help you get the best development setup available.

  Needs works on

Keeping it simple and getting sh*t done.

  🦄 The Unicorn

Do they really exist? It is told that some of them are in possession of the very rare early bird medal 🥇

  Habitat

Rarely seen, some people seem to believe the unicorn developer hides somewhere on dev.to.. who knows

  Best to ask for

Whatever, they are awesome all the way

  Needs works on

Stage fright, please show yourself unicorn developers!

  🚫 Doctor no

Doctor no, not the villain you'd expect.. They sometimes seem evil but really, they have a good heart! Are always sure there's a better way of doing things. If you come up with an idea they disagree by default and force their own view on the matter.

  Habitat

Behind the computer searching for counter arguments.

  Best to ask for

For getting different perspectives on the problem or if you need a good NO!

  Needs works on

Listening to others and try to collaborate.

EDIT: If there are three or more good profiles in the comment I will dedicate a new post to them, let's see how many we can create!

  Developers

Developers, they come in all shapes and sizes. What do most of them have in common? They don't like to be put in a box. Despite this I'm going to do just that 😜 I'm going to try to capture different developer characteristics by matching them with their own personal icon 😊 I'd really like to know: with what kind of developer can you relate to the most? I'll start by describing 3 types, but please feel free to leave your own "iconic developer" in the comments!

  🧐 The know-it-all

This programmer always seems to know the best solution, at least that's their belief.

  Habitat

Enjoys being around other programmers to showcase their knowledge. Can mostly be found crawling the web.

  Best to ask for

Doing research on new frameworks/tools because gathering knowledge is their power.

  Needs works on

Mostly needs to work on getting stuff done. There is a big difference between code in your head and actual code.

  🤠 The cowboy

This programmer writes code faster than their shadow. This speed comes with a cost though.

  Habitat

Enjoys hackathons and feels comfortable in a team with other cowboys!

  Best to ask for

Creating a proof of concepts that needs to be done fast.

  Needs works on

Writing code that is less prone to error and easier to maintain. Mostly the code of a cowboy is not something you want the change later on.

  🤪 The funny one

Making puns all day and leaving Easter eggs left and right in the code. Keeps the team happy!

  Habitat

Are at their best in a close team. Likes to add joy to programming!

  Best to ask for

Creating a proof of concepts that needs to be done fast.

  Needs works on

Being less influenced by the mood of others. Consistency in the code is hard if the mood is off.

  There must be more 😎

Please let me know what you can come up with!
To get you started:
😎😁🤐😴🤑😤🐱‍👤

## 💻 [name]

#### Habitat

#### Best to ask for

#### Needs works on

Looking forward to your creativity!

Another ✔||🤢, casting to number with +;

Actually found this one in the angular documentation at some point.

// example: numberInputField.value = "3"
const startValue: number = +numberInputField.value;
