There's a lot of noise about developer hiring right now. One post says AI has killed junior roles, the next says every company wants AI engineers. I wanted to see what the open listings actually say.

Everything below is as of 16 Oct 2026, from JobRise's live job listings. JobRise crawls public listings from company career sites (Workday, Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever and others), national job boards and job APIs, removes duplicates, and puts each job in one category. Two categories matter here:

Software: developers, DevOps, QA, platform and similar roles

Data & AI: data engineers, analysts, scientists, ML and AI engineers

How many dev and AI roles are open

Across nine countries there were 104,289 open Software and Data & AI listings. Another 7,556 were remote listings not tied to any single country.

Country

Software

Data & AI

Share of all listings there

United States

31,618

14,554

11.6%

Germany

15,250

2,886

2.0%

India

10,986

4,865

29.3%

Singapore

5,829

1,766

9.5%

United Kingdom

3,742

2,046

8.1%

Netherlands

3,942

1,151

2.1%

Canada

3,151

1,305

14.4%

Australia

583

311

11.4%

UAE

179

125

10.9%

Remote, no single country

3,205

4,351

n/a

India is the most tech-heavy market here: almost 3 in 10 of its open listings are software or data roles. Germany's number looks big, but it sits inside a huge total (888,202 listings, mostly from the national job board), so tech is only 2% of what's open there.

Totals depend on which sources cover each country. Compare shares inside a country, not raw totals between countries.

Where the AI and ML roles are

I counted listings with an AI or ML term in the title: AI, ML, machine learning, LLM, generative AI, deep learning, NLP or computer vision (plus KI for German titles). Across the nine countries, 17,412 Software and Data & AI listings matched. That's about 1 in 6 (16.7%).

United States: 9,170 (19.9% of US dev and data listings)

India: 2,140 (13.5%)

Germany: 1,956 (10.7%)

Singapore: 1,249 (16.2%)

United Kingdom: 1,177 (20.4%)

Canada: 835 (18.7%)

Netherlands: 589 (11.6%)

Australia: 222 (24.9%)

UAE: 74 (24.4%)

The most common US titles in this group are plain engineering jobs: AI Engineer (100 listings), Machine Learning Engineer (82), Senior Machine Learning Engineer (69), Senior AI Engineer (59) and Applied AI Engineer (44). Only about 700 of the 17,412 (4%) mention AI training, evaluation or labelling in the title, the kind of task work some platforms post.

The employers with the most AI or ML titled listings were Google (869), JPMorgan Chase (381), NVIDIA (370), Meridial (173), mercor (164) and Capgemini (158).

The remote pool with no single country looks different. Half of its dev and data listings (3,730 of 7,566) have an AI term in the title. One company, Prolific, accounts for 2,500 of those 7,566 listings, mostly AI training tasks posted once per language and country, with titles like "AI Trainer - Polish". If you see a flood of remote "AI jobs", check whether they're engineering roles or task work.

 Cities

City numbers only count listings that name a city JobRise can match, so they run lower than country totals.

Bengaluru: 4,578 (3,164 Software, 1,414 Data & AI)

San Francisco: 3,338 (2,170 and 1,168)

New York: 2,510 (1,536 and 974)

London: 2,470 (1,473 and 997)

Hyderabad: 1,684 (two city labels combined: "Hyderabad" and "Hyderabad/Secunderabad")

Berlin: 1,619

Pune: 1,402

Munich: 1,249

Toronto: 888

Hamburg: 677

San Francisco has the second most Data & AI listings after Bengaluru. London edges New York on Data & AI, 997 to 974.

 Who's posting the most

Top employers across the nine countries, Software and Data & AI combined, with names as listed:

Company

Listings

Google

2,641

Wipro

1,667

JPMorgan Chase

1,374

HCL Technologies

1,193

NVIDIA

1,109

Capgemini

840

Amazon

799

Anduril Industries

716

SpaceX

665

BAH

660

These ten hold 11.2% of the listings. The rest is spread across about 18,400 other company names.

By country, the US list is led by Google (2,002), JPMorgan Chase (940), NVIDIA (830), Anduril (685) and SpaceX (665). Defence and aerospace names rank high there, with Northrop Grumman (listed as NGC) at 530. In India it's Wipro (1,198), HCL Technologies (1,146), Amazon (793) and Infosys (551). In the UK, JPMorgan Chase leads with 286.

 How much is remote

Counting the way JobRise's hiring reports do (only sources that mark remote work), 30.6% of dev and data listings in the nine countries are remote: 21,898 of 71,489.

That needs a caveat. 17,039 of those remote listings (78%) came from remote-only job boards, mostly Himalayas. Boards like that exist to collect remote roles, so they lift the share.

On employer career sites alone (Workday, Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever and similar), 8.4% of dev and data listings say remote in the location: 3,346 of 40,064. By country, Canada was highest at 16.9%, then the US at 9.0% and the UK at 8.3%. India was at 4.4% and Singapore at 1.6%.

So remote dev jobs exist in real numbers, but most employers still hire for a place.

 3 practical tips

Go where your field is a big slice of the market. In India, software and data are 29% of all listings, and Bengaluru alone has 4,578 of them. In the US, San Francisco and New York lead. If you can move or commute, the city matters more than the national average.

"AI engineer" is still mostly engineering. The common AI titles are AI Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer, at the same companies hiring regular developers. A small project that calls a model, tests the output and handles failures shows that skill better than a line on your resume saying "AI".

Don't search only remote boards. On company career sites, about 92% of dev and data listings name a place. Pick 20 target companies from lists like the one above, check their career pages every week, and set an alert for your city and category.

 Free tools and a course

JobRise has free AI tools for the job search: an ATS resume checker, cover letter generator, cold email writer, mock interviews and a LinkedIn optimizer. Some, like the ATS checker, work without signing up.

If you want to get better at coding with AI, there's also a JobRise course, AI for software developers. It covers prompts that get reviewable code, reading AI diffs before you run them, letting tests set the target, debugging, and the security holes AI writes. Module 1, "Code with AI, and check every line", is free.

For alerts, every country and category page, like software jobs in the United States, has a "Get new jobs like these by email" box.

 Data note

As of 16 Oct 2026, from JobRise's live job listings: public listings crawled from career sites, job boards and job APIs, with duplicates removed (matched on company and job title, each job counted once).

Category and city counts come from JobRise's job pages (data timestamp 10:07 UTC). AI title counts, remote counts and company rankings come from the full listing pages for each country and category, fetched between 10:07 and 13:00 UTC, so a few totals differ slightly from the page counts.

AI and ML matching is a keyword rule on titles. It misses roles like "Data Scientist" that don't name AI, and can catch a few that aren't AI work.

Remote means the location says remote, anywhere, worldwide or work from home. Some remote-friendly roles don't say so in the location.

Counts change daily as jobs open and close.
