&lt;p&gt;Prerequisite: Once you’ve signed up for DigitalOcean, you need update your contact information and transfer some money (around $5) to your DigitalOcean account to create your first droplet. Think of it as a prepaid phone. You can use PayPal or credit card to recharge your account. Now we are ready to create our WordPress droplet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;DigitalOcean User Account Organization: What are Projects?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Projects are a basic unit of organization in your DigitalOcean account. Each project can have multiple droplets and other features (such as load balancers and object storage) that DigitalOcean has to offer. A single DigitalOcean account can have multiple projects.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We start by creating our first DigitalOcean project. Select a project name, description, project purpose and environment. An environment can be either Development, Staging or Production. For our tutorial, we’ve chosen the options as shown in the screenshot above.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Since DigitalOcean is a developer focused cloud hosting platform, they have these additional options that go a long way in helping developers organize their projects.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;How to Create WordPress Droplet in DigitalOcean&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Once you’ve created a project, you can now create a droplet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 1: We start off by creating a droplet inside the WPExplorer project.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 2: Select Ubuntu as your droplet’s OS and then select the One-click apps tab.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 3: Select WordPress on 18.04. This means that DigitalOcean is going to automatically install WordPress on Ubuntu 18.04.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Note — You can additionally add backups to your Droplet. However, this is not important to us since this is a tutorial. Also, this should not be confused with WordPress backups. A droplet backup are automatic system-level backups, which mean they copy everything in the OS (and not just WordPress).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 4: DigitalOcean droplets can be deployed across 8 different datacenters. Since I’m located in India, I’ve selected Bangalore. It is optional to select the additional options (such as private network, IPv6, etc.) and an SSH key. Since we’re here to only install WordPress, these features won’t be necessary. However feel free to try them out in your DigitalOcean account!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 5: As you can see, the default project, i.e. WPExplorer is automatically selected. Enter a hostname (this is for you to remember internally) and click on Create to start creating your droplet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;DigitalOcean droplet is ready!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 6: Once the droplet is created, you’ll see message similar to the screenshot above.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;You should also receive a similar email in your registered DigitalOcean email account.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Logging into DigitalOcean droplet via SSH Console&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It’s almost time for the famous 5 minute WordPress install. Only this time we’re going to be done within 2 minutes. We already have the IP address that we can use to login to the WordPress server. However, we need to login to our DigitalOcean droplet via SSH for a first-time configuration.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Unless we do that, we’re going to see a message like this when we enter the IP address in our browser. You can login to your DigitalOcean droplet via SSH using Putty in Windows or Terminal in Mac. However, DigitalOcean has an even simpler way to do this, as shown below:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;First, from you DigitalOcean dashboard, select your droplet, and then select the Access tab from the left menu. Click on Launch Console to access your droplet via SSH using your web browser.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Next, enter your username (root) and password that was emailed to you earlier. You’ll be immediately asked to create a new password for the root user account. Once you’ve reset the root password, you should see a message similar to the one above.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That’s it. We’re now ready for the famous 2-minute WordPress install!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Configuring WordPress installation on DigitalOcean&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So far we’ve:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Created a new DigitalOcean droplet with Ubuntu and WordPress pre-installed; and&lt;br&gt;
Logged into the droplet via SSH (using DigitalOcean’s built-in console access).&lt;br&gt;
Now we need to do the final steps to get our WordPress site ready.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Enter the IP address in your browser, and you should be greeted with the famous install screen.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now select a username, password and email address. The database configuration has been pre-configured by DigitalOcean. You might also want to turn off search engine visibility, if you’re testing a site. Only thing is, you should enable it once your site is ready.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Click on Install WordPress and let the magic happen.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;And there you have it — WordPress is ready.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This marks the end of our basic tutorial.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Bonus: DigitalOcean For Beginners (Another Cloud Option)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Advanced WordPress configuration in DigitalOcean&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Having a WordPress site in DigitalOcean is great. However, it won’t do much good if your WordPress site’s URL is an IP address. We need to link it to a domain name. Also, encrypted websites are the norm today, so we’re going to learn how to install an HTTPS certificate in our WordPress droplet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here’s a round-up of what we’ll be covering in our advanced WordPress configuration section:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Configure a domain name to your WordPress site&lt;br&gt;
Install HTTPS for WordPress in your DigitalOcean droplet.&lt;br&gt;
Configuring a domain name to your DigitalOcean WordPress droplet&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In order to configure your WordPress URL, you need to:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Add an “A record” pointing to your droplet’s IP address and&lt;br&gt;
Change the site URL from the WordPress admin dashboard.&lt;br&gt;
It’s a two part process that needs to be done sequentially.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Part 1: Adding an A record to your domain:&lt;br&gt;
This part mostly depends on your hosting provider. You should refer your hosts documentation on adding A records to your DNS. Or simply Google “how to add a record in ” You should get specific instructions.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If your host comes with cPanel (most shared web hosts do), we’ve got a tutorial for you right here:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 1: Login to your cPanel account and select Zone Editor. You can also use the search function in cPanel to quickly locate this tool.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 2: Click on + A Record to add a new A record.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 3: Let’s assume your domain name is example.com and you want to point it to your new DigitalOcean droplet. In this case, you need to add two A records in your DNS Zone editor. The first one is for example.com and the other is for &lt;a href="http://www.example.com"&gt;www.example.com&lt;/a&gt;. Both these records will point your primary domain name to the droplet’s IP address. You should use the following configuration:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A Record #1: ‘example.com’&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Name: example.com. (yes a trailing '.' is included)&lt;br&gt;
Address: In the address field, add you droplet's IP address.&lt;br&gt;
A Record #2: ‘www.example.com’&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Name: &lt;a href="http://www.example.com"&gt;www.example.com&lt;/a&gt;. (a trailing '.' will automatically appear. If it does not, ignore it!)&lt;br&gt;
Address: Your droplet's IP address.&lt;br&gt;
However, for our tutorial, we’re using a subdomain — digitalocean.souravkundu.in. Therefore we’ve entered a single A record for the subdomain to point to the droplet’s IP address.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Note — this setup is also useful for websites that have different subdomain for their blog. For instance “blog.productsite.com”.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A Record for our tutorial: ‘digitalocean.souravkundu.in’&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Name: digitalocean.souravkundu.in.&lt;br&gt;
Address: Our droplet's IP address&lt;br&gt;
Once the A records are configured to point to the droplet’s IP address, it should take some time for it to reflect. (It does not happen instantaneously). This waiting period is called the DNS propagation time, and lasts up to 24 hours. However, practically speaking, it should not take more than 5 minutes if it’s a new A record.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Step 4: To verify that the A record is working, enter the URL (which in our case is digitalocean.souravkundu.in) in your browser, and you should see your WordPress site. That tells you that you’ve successfully linked your domain to your DigitalOcean droplet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Part 2: Changing the WordPress Site URL in DigitalOcean&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;When we’ve installed the WordPress site in DigitalOcean, the site URL is automatically configured to be the server’s IP address. We now have to change it to the new domain name we just configured.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Head over to the WordPress dashboard → Settings → General. We have to change two fields here:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;WordPress Address (URL)&lt;br&gt;
Site Address (URL)&lt;br&gt;
Change it to the respective URL you’ve set in the A record in the previous section. It should be either ‘example.com’ or ‘blog.example.com’. Note that both the WordPress Address and the Site Address need to have the same values.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In our tutorial, we’ve used &lt;a href="http://digitalocean.souravkundu.in/"&gt;http://digitalocean.souravkundu.in/&lt;/a&gt;. Once done scroll down and hit Save to save the changes.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Your WordPress site is now ready!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Adding HTTPS to WordPress using DigitalOcean&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Setting up an SSL certificate enables HTTPS on the web server, which secures the traffic between the server and the clients connecting to it. DigitalOcean pre-installs a tool called Certbot in the one-click WordPress install droplet. Certbot is a free and convenient way to set up SSL certificates on a server.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We’ll now look at how to configure Certbot in DigitalOcean to add HTTPS to your WordPress site.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;According to DigitalOcean’s documentation, to use Certbot, you’ll need a registered domain name and two DNS records:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;An A record from the domain (e.g., example.com) to the server’s IP address&lt;br&gt;
An A record from the domain prefaced with www (e.g., &lt;a href="http://www.example.com"&gt;www.example.com&lt;/a&gt;) to the server’s IP address.&lt;br&gt;
This is very similar to the part 1 of the DNS configuration section. And guess what? We’ve already done it!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Once this step is done, we’ll need to login to the droplet’s console via SSH and run the following command:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;certbot --apache -d example.com -d &lt;a href="http://www.example.com"&gt;www.example.com&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br&gt;
Only thing is example.com is replaced with your domain name. In our tutorial, since we’re only using a subdomain, the command is going to be:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;certbot --apache -d digitalocean.souravkundu.in&lt;br&gt;
There are going to be a couple of prompts when the command is running. Simply agree to them by entering ‘Y’ on the console.&lt;br&gt;
You’ll also be asked if you want to redirect all HTTP traffic to the HTTPS version of the website. I would recommend selecting yes, since this ensures that all your visitors get the encrypted version of your website.&lt;br&gt;
Once done, you’ll have to go back to the WordPress dashboard and change the site URL from http to https, as shown in the screenshot below.&lt;/p&gt;

These are real-world use cases for adopting a private cloud strategy. Also, some organizations prefer to host their own data and applications in-house, keeping all data off third-party servers. In that case, they can opt for a private cloud, not just for reasons of control but also to expedite the setup process, with cloud provider assistance in hardware maintenance.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But unlike an on-prem server, a private cloud increases security, not just by keeping sensitive data out of a public cloud setting, to begin with. This approach also strengthens data segregation. With an on-prem server, sensitive data can still be accessed by unauthorized personnel within the organization. Private cloud enables data security teams to fully orchestrate the paths data can take to make sure data is seen and handled by those with the proper permissions.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Public clouds&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br&gt;
In essence, a public cloud environment means that you are renting a company’s physical infrastructure, which consists of physical servers. Someone else maintains the data center. You do not need to interact with or maintain this infrastructure on your own. The cloud provider takes care of everything from initial setup to maintenance tasks. The public cloud option enables teams to dedicate more time and financial resources to their applications instead of the infrastructure.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Scalability is another big plus for a public cloud strategy. If a company’s traffic is season-specific or centers around one specific event one would add more servers to meet traffic demand.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But what if there is a substantial amount of sensitive data, and compliance rules dictate that this data should not live in a public cloud setting? You can opt for an in-house private cloud setup, or you can adopt a hybrid cloud strategy to take advantage of your existing hardware.&lt;/p&gt;

Multiclouds also permit organizations to take advantage of prepackaged tools from a favored cloud vendor. And… that’s just two of countless reasons for choosing a multicloud infrastructure. We unpack the benefits of a multicloud adoption and its drawbacks and include some hypotheticals to illustrate why multicloud is becoming a more attractive choice for architects and IT professionals.&lt;/p&gt;

The rise of microservices from monolithic applications has accelerated multicloud adoption, though that’s not the only factor.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Increased flexibility&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br&gt;
Establishing a multicloud infrastructure can help your IT operations stay nimble and adaptable and enable linear scalability. You can change things around more easily when circumstances warrant, and the more resources you put into it, the stronger its throughput.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Why would you want to run one single application across multiple clouds? Besides breaking a monolithic architecture into smaller, manageable pieces, a multicloud architecture lets you pick and choose the features you want from multiple cloud services.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Think of multicloud’s flexibility in the way a savvy consumer uses credit cards. Perhaps they use their Delta Airline credit card for large purchases to gain airline miles, an Amazon card for the money-back rewards, and a Shell card to rack up points and save on gas. Each provider offers its specific incentives.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Multicloud works much in the same way. Perhaps the latest Google Cloud update has a machine learning component from which your application can benefit, something that the other cloud vendors lack.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There’s also an infinite amount of third-party resources that you can use to make your application more robust. Kubernetes, for example, is vendor agnostic; it lets you deploy containerized applications across multiple clouds without the need for a physical server.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Multicloud lets you design an infrastructure piecemeal, upping the scalability with a function from this cloud and a little bit from another.&lt;br&gt;
**&lt;br&gt;
Improved availability and disaster recovery**&lt;br&gt;
Today, even a second of latency may be unacceptable for some applications. Some applications genuinely require real-time responsiveness, such as medical devices or geolocational systems.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Uptime, too, is a critical issue in many situations. Nobody wants a system to go down or to operate so slowly that it cannot do its job. Keeping availability at 99.999% is a goal for many organizations.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In both these cases, one way to meet the necessary thresholds is data replication. Spreading database replicas around the globe can alleviate constraints on a region’s availability, and if one of the far-flung cloud providers offers Active-Active replication, all the better. Active-Active syncs a database with all the nodes in the network, guaranteeing real-time data consistency across all replicas, wherever in the world they may be.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Another way to improve availability is to split the overall workload among several cloud services. Some businesses have steady heavy traffic all year long, while others see traffic spikes seasonally. In the latter instance, it wouldn’t make sense to provide cloud support all year round if that huge influx of traffic only occurs for a two-week period every year.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Take Wimbledon, for instance. It’s arguably the most celebrated event in professional tennis and has ardent fans in every corner of the globe. When ticket sales open, the Wimbledon site would expect a significant increase in web demand. A keen cloud services team would make sure that all regions are prepared for the impending traffic surge. But what if you already know that your current cloud service providers don’t service, say, Argentina? That would be the right moment to ensure the Wimbledon application is distributed to a cloud provider that does service the lower South American region.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;IT organizations often have data from previous spikes. The tennis web team might know from experience that in the three months between ticket sales opening and the start of the tournament, traffic doesn’t just plateau — it plummets. In that case, you’d cease supplemental cloud support and ramp it back up again when the tournament begins.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Outages do happen so you need a disaster recovery plan. If an entire region experiences a major outage, disaster recovery replication, cluster recovery, and other disaster recovery mechanisms offered by multiple cloud providers can step in to keep operations afloat.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Questions to consider: costs and security&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br&gt;
With multicloud, costs can easily spiral. The more vendors you work with, the more money it costs — if only to administer the relationships. Having a full replica backup in the cloud as a “just in case” comes with a price.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;IT teams need to consider the appropriate multicloud architecture and establish a system to guarantee that workloads aren’t set to an autopilot set-it-and-forget-it trajectory. Keep close tabs on workload lifts and what cloud does what. Know when to pull the plug on a supporting cloud system — and have a process in place to let you know when the situation occurs. If managed deftly, the multicloud approach could pay off in major dividends in the form of major savings.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Establishing a sound multicloud security strategy can help you manage IT costs. Finding a cloud vendor that provides essential resources, such as threat detection, can avert bad actors from causing serious financial damage to your business through cyber attacks. Data loss, compromised assets, and waning consumer trust have serious financial consequences.&lt;/p&gt;

Multicloud options also have a stumbling block or two. Take these five considerations into account when considering a multicloud environment.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Increased complexity&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br&gt;
According to Forrester’s Unlocking Multiclouds Operation Potential, security, and operational complexity are major organizational challenges. “Eighty-nine percent of respondents agree that security is the most critical determinant of success for a cloud strategy,” the white paper says, “and this is exacerbated by multicloud environment complexity. Thirty-one percent ranked complexity as the most significant internal challenge to cloud security.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Governance and compliance&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br&gt;
Not all cloud environments are made the same, and thus, their controls are vastly different. For one, each cloud has a different nomenclature, and your personnel needs to stay up to date. That is: You have to train people to work with new-to-them services and technologies.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Cloud providers, including Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services, offer their own certifications. Do you want to invest resources to certify your internal team on all major cloud services, or to hire independent teams that specialize in each of these services? Both options increase overhead and expenses. But either way, upskill your staff. As Sir Richard Branson suggests, “Train people well enough so they can leave; treat them well enough, so they don’t want to.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Vendor lock-in&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br&gt;
Remember those specialized functions each cloud brings to the table? Unfortunately, that level of specialization can be a double-edged sword. Choosing a cloud provider for one proprietary function can create vendor lock-in. It can be dangerous to tie your company’s success to a single vendor or cloud service provider.&lt;/p&gt;

In this case, organizations may need to design their own integration systems or reduce dependencies with SaaS services, which may not always be possible.&lt;br&gt;
Vendor lock-in. Vendors may make it easy to join a service and difficult to get out of it. For instance, the data may not be portable–technically or cost-effectively–across SaaS apps from other vendors without incurring significant cost or inhouse engineering rework. Not every vendor follows standard APIs, protocols, and tools, yet the features could be necessary for certain business tasks.&lt;br&gt;
Lack of integration support. Many organizations require deep integrations with on-premise apps, data, and services. The SaaS vendor may offer limited support in this regard, forcing organizations to invest internal resources in designing and managing integrations. Data security. Large volumes of data may have to be exchanged to the backend data centers of SaaS apps in order to perform the necessary software functionality. Transferring sensitive business information to public-cloud based SaaS service may result in compromised security and compliance in addition to significant cost for migrating large data workloads.&lt;br&gt;
Customization. SaaS apps offer minimal customization capabilities. Since a one-size-fits-all solution does not exist, users may be limited to specific functionality, performance, and integrations as offered by the vendor. In contrast, on-premise solutions that come with several software development kits (SDKs) offer a high degree of customization options.&lt;br&gt;
Lack of control. SaaS solutions involves handing control over to the third-party service provider. These controls are not limited to the software–in terms of the version, updates, or appearance–but also the data and governance. Customers may therefore need to redefine their data security and governance models to fit the features and functionality of the SaaS service.&lt;br&gt;
Feature limitations. Since SaaS apps often come in a standardized form, the choice of features may be a compromising tradeoff against security, cost, performance, or other organizational policies. Vendor lock-in. Business and technical requirements that drive decisions for a specific PaaS solution may not apply in the future. If the vendor has not provisioned convenient migration policies, switching to alternative PaaS options may not be possible without affecting the business.&lt;br&gt;
Customization of legacy systems. PaaS may not be a plug-and-play solution for existing legacy apps and services. Instead, several customizations and configuration changes may be necessary for legacy systems to work with the PaaS service.   IaaS Limitations &amp;amp; Concerns
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Many limitations associated with SaaS and PaaS models – such as data security, cost overruns, vendor lock-in and customization issues – also apply to the IaaS model. Particular limitations to IaaS include:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Security. While the customer is in control of the apps, data, middleware, and the OS platform, security threats can still be sourced from the host or other virtual machines (VMs). Insider threat or system vulnerabilities may expose data communication between the host infrastructure and VMs to unauthorized entities.&lt;br&gt;
Legacy systems operating in the cloud. While customers can run legacy apps in the cloud, the infrastructure may not be designed to deliver specific controls to secure the legacy apps. Minor enhancement to legacy apps may be required before migrating them to the cloud, possibly leading to new security issues unless adequately tested for security and performance in the IaaS systems.&lt;br&gt;
Internal resources and training. Additional resources and training may be required for the workforce to learn how to effectively manage the infrastructure. Customers will be responsible for data security, backup, and business continuity. Due to inadequate control into the infrastructure however, monitoring and management of the resources may be difficult without adequate training and resources available inhouse.&lt;br&gt;
Multi-tenant security. Since the hardware resources are dynamically allocated across users as made available, the vendor is required to ensure that other customers cannot access data deposited to storage assets by previous customers. Similarly, customers must rely on the vendor to ensure that VMs are adequately isolated within the multitenant cloud architecture.&lt;br&gt;
