What Happens to Your Mutual Fund Between 9 AM and 9 PM?

If you invest in mutual funds, you've probably noticed something odd: you can check the live price of any stock on your watchlist at any second, but for the mutual fund you've put lakhs into — you get one number, once a day, hours after the market closes.

Between market open (9:15 AM) and when the official NAV is published (usually after 9 PM), you have no idea how your fund is doing.

 The Blind Spot

Let's say Nifty drops 2% by noon. Is your large-cap fund down 2% as well? Maybe. Maybe not. Your fund might hold certain stocks that are doing worse — or better — than the index. But you won't know until tonight.

Compare this to someone holding individual stocks or ETFs — they can see every tick. They can make informed decisions. They have data.

With mutual funds? You're guessing.

Why Can't AMCs Publish Live NAVs?

It's not laziness — it's structural. Mutual fund NAVs depend on the closing prices of all securities in the portfolio, plus accounting for cash, dividends, and expenses. This calculation can only be finalized after the market closes. SEBI requires AMCs to publish NAVs by 11 PM, and most do so by 9-10 PM.

 So What Can You Do?

Here's the thing: while the official NAV has to wait, you can get a very close estimate much earlier.

 See It In Action (Demo)

Watch a quick 1-minute demo of how it works:
📺 MF Forecast Demo Video

Every mutual fund discloses its full portfolio of holdings periodically. If you know what stocks a fund holds (and in what proportions), and you can see those stocks' live prices, you can mathematically approximate how the fund's NAV is likely changing — in real-time.

This is exactly what MF Forecast does.

 How MF Forecast Works

Portfolio mapping: We know the exact holdings and weights of each mutual fund from their latest disclosure

Live tracking: During market hours, we track the real-time prices of every stock inside each fund

Estimated NAV: We apply the weighted changes to the last known NAV to calculate a live estimate

The result? You can see an estimated NAV for your fund that updates every minute, all through the trading day.

 Can You Trust the Estimates?

Good question — and one you should ask.

MF Forecast has a feature called TruthLens that addresses this directly. Every day, once the official NAV is published, we compare it against our estimate from that day. The accuracy percentage is shown right on the fund's page.

If yesterday's estimate was 99.5% accurate, you have a pretty good data-driven reason to consider today's estimate useful too.

We believe predictions without proof are just noise. TruthLens is our way of putting data behind the claim.

 Who Is This For?

SIP investors who want to know if today is a good day for a lumpsum top-up

Active investors who track markets and want real-time fund-level visibility

Anyone curious about how their fund is performing before the nightly NAV update

What Else Does MF Forecast Offer?

Portfolio heatmaps — see exactly which sectors and stocks are lifting or dragging your fund

NAV history charts — interactive historical performance data

Investor toolkit — same-day NAV cutoff timers, NSE/BSE holiday calendar, educational content on topics like SIP vs Lumpsum, exit loads, and tax rules

 Try It

MF Forecast is free to use, with no premium tiers or paywalls.

→ mfforecast.com

Disclaimer: MF Forecast provides AI-generated estimates, not official NAVs. Always refer to your AMC or registrar for official data. This is not financial advice.
