This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

 🥑 RoomieBites - Allergy-Safe Roommate Meal Planner

A simple, privacy-first meal planner and shopping list generator designed to keep track of your roommates' food allergies and dietary preferences, suggest guaranteed safe meals, schedule 7-day weekly calendars, and automatically organize grocery lists by aisle.

 What I Built

Living with roommates is one of the best parts of university and young adulthood—until it comes time to answer the age-old question: "What are we having for dinner?"

I built RoomieBites for my roommate Alex (and our apartment circle). Alex lives with severe peanut and tree nut allergies alongside celiac disease (strict gluten intolerance). In a shared living space, planning communal dinners or even keeping shared pantry staples safe can be stressful. One accidental dash of ordinary soy sauce or cross-contaminated sauce can turn dinner into a medical emergency.

RoomieBites solves this by turning allergy safety into an effortless, collaborative experience:

Roommate Allergy Guard: Tracks each roommate's specific allergies (Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Gluten, Dairy, Shellfish, Eggs, Soy, etc.), dietary lifestyle (Vegetarian, Vegan, Halal, High-Protein), and personal dislikes.

Whole Household Safety Mode: A single filter that computes the intersection of everyone's dietary restrictions, guaranteeing that any meal chosen is 100% safe for everyone at the table.

Automated Safe 7-Day Planner: A 1-click "Auto-Fill Safe Week" generator that creates a balanced weekly menu (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack) with zero allergen conflicts.

Smart Aisle-Organized Grocery List: Collects ingredients from planned meals, aggregates quantities, groups items by supermarket aisles (Produce, Dairy & Substitutes, Meat & Protein, Grains & Bakery, Pantry), and provides interactive store checkboxes.

Allergen Alert Shield: If someone tries to manually schedule a recipe containing an allergen, an active warning alert warns the user before it gets scheduled.

 Demo

RoomieBites runs completely client-side with zero build steps or complex dependencies required.

Live Local Demo : Open [https://kaushaltukadiya-creator.github.io/RoomieBites/] in amy mordern browser.

 Quick Preview & Walkthrough:

Household Safety Status: The top banner dynamically updates to reflect who is being protected (e.g., Protecting Alex: ⚠️ Avoids Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Gluten).

Weekly Meal Calendar: Displays Monday through Sunday across 4 daily slots. Click "✨ Auto-Fill Safe Week" to instantly generate an allergen-free week.

Safe Meal Suggestions: Browse cards tagged with 🟢 Safe for Roomie or 🔴 Contains [Allergen] warning banners. Filter by cooking time (< 20 mins), diet, or category.

Smart Grocery Shopping List: View aggregated ingredients categorized by aisle. Check off items in the store, add custom extra items (e.g. oat milk, coffee), and click "📋 Copy to Clipboard" or "🖨️ Print / Save PDF".

View on GitHub

🔗 GitHub Repository: https://github.com/KaushalTukadiya-Creator/RoomieBites

The project is built cleanly with zero bloat, emphasizing maximum performance, responsive accessibility, and zero-setup deployment.

Frontend Core: Semantic HTML5 with tabbed views, modal dialogs, and ARIA attributes for screen-reader accessibility.

Styling: Tailored Vanilla CSS with glassmorphism, responsive grid/flexbox layouts, modern typography (Outfit & Plus Jakarta Sans), and dedicated
@media print
styling for paper or PDF grocery sheets.

Engine Logic (
app.js
):

Deterministic allergen conflict detection engine.

Multi-profile state manager with
localStorage
persistence.

Dynamic shopping list aggregator that extracts and categorizes ingredients from planned recipes.

Clipboard export and toast notification system.

 How I Built It

RoomieBites was architected and pair-programmed collaboratively with Google Antigravity using an agentic coding workflow:

Safety-First Engine Architecture: We designed a strict allergen validation model where recipes must pass a comprehensive checklist against all active roommate constraints before being recommended.

Privacy-Centric Client-Side Execution: Many people are hesitant to enter sensitive medical and dietary data into third-party servers. RoomieBites is architected entirely on local browser state (
localStorage
), ensuring private health data never leaves the user's machine without explicit consent.

Iterative UX & Micro-Interactions: We iteratively refined the design system—incorporating high-contrast safety badges, intuitive modal workflows, responsive calendar viewports, and one-click clipboard formatting for WhatsApp/iMessage group texts.

 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Food allergies affect more than 32 million Americans and hundreds of millions worldwide. Navigating dietary restrictions should not require expensive, ad-riddled proprietary meal apps with locked paywalls and data monetization.

Open innovation matters because:

Safety is Universal: Open-source tools allow anyone—students in dorms, multi-generational families, or community kitchens—to adapt, fork, and tailor meal planning algorithms to rare allergies or regional ingredients.

Radical Transparency: When dealing with anaphylactic allergies or celiac disease, opaque algorithms and hidden sponsored recipe promotions can be dangerous. An open codebase means the allergy verification logic is clear, auditable, and trustworthy.

Zero Lock-In & Portability: Open innovation guarantees that people retain full control over their recipes, profiles, and grocery workflows forever.

 My Agent Session

This project was developed through an interactive human-in-the-loop pair programming session using the Antigravity IDE:

Refined form requirements and accessibility guidelines.

Iterated on fintech UI aesthetics (converting a basic table into a modern dashboard with ambient glows, icon wrappers, and category pills).

Audited input validation and LocalStorage serialization.

 Prize Categories

Build for a Friend: Dedicated to my roommate Alex, transforming stressful shared-kitchen meal planning into a safe, joyful everyday routine.

Thank you to the DEV Community and the Hacktoberfest team for fostering open-source innovation!

The project is built cleanly with zero bloat, emphasizing maximum performance, responsive accessibility, and zero-setup deployment.

Frontend Core: Semantic HTML5 with tabbed views, modal dialogs, and ARIA attributes for screen-reader accessibility.

Styling: Tailored Vanilla CSS with glassmorphism, responsive grid/flexbox layouts, modern typography (Outfit & Plus Jakarta Sans), and dedicated
@media print
styling for paper or PDF grocery sheets.

 Nature Explorer AI 🌿

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

 What I Built

Nature Explorer AI is an open-source, full-stack web application designed to counter digital screen fatigue by turning outdoor exploration into an engaging, educational adventure.

Instead of keeping users tethered to their desks or doom-scrolling feeds, Nature Explorer AI acts as an intentional, lightweight field companion. When you step outside into a city park, hiking trail, forest reserve, or your own backyard, you can snap photographs of birds, native wildflowers, trees, and insects. The app leverages open-weight vision models to identify species, teach ecological context, highlight distinguishing characteristics, and recommend safe, hands-on outdoor activities.

 Key Capabilities:

🦅 Open-Weight AI Vision Identification: Instant classification for birds, plants, insects, and other wildlife using open-weight Vision Transformers, paired with confidence indicators and ecological disclaimers.

📖 Personal Discovery Journal: A 100% private field notebook stored locally in your browser (
localStorage
) with thumbnail downscaling, keyword search, kingdom filtering (Birds, Plants, Insects, All), and detail inspection.

🌲 Touch Grass Outdoor Quests: 8 curated, screen-free micro-challenges—such as mapping natural soundscapes, finding five distinct leaf shapes, or practicing 15 minutes of uninterrupted forest bathing—complete with local progress tracking and a "Surprise Me!" random adventure generator.

🎨 Sensory Nature Design: An organic palette of deep forest greens, soothing sage, and warm parchment cream tones built with Tailwind CSS, custom typography, and accessible UI components.

 Who It Is For:

Anyone experiencing screen burnout who wants a fun reason to step outside and touch grass.

Amateur naturalists, hikers, and weekend explorers wanting to learn about local biodiversity.

Students, families, and educators looking for an open-source, privacy-first field guide.

 Demo

Live Local App: http://localhost:5173 (Frontend) & http://localhost:3001 (API Server)

Health Check Status: http://localhost:3001/api/health

 Visual Walkthrough

Home & Exploration Hero

Species Identification Result

Step Outside. Discover More Hero with biodiversity highlights

European Robin match with distinguishing traits & confidence

My Nature Field Journal

Touch Grass Outdoor Quests

Filterable, searchable local discoveries grid

Interactive quest cards, progress bar & Surprise Me modal

 Code

The complete source code is organized into a clean, modular full-stack architecture:

Repository: https://github.com/KaushalTukadiya-Creator/Nature-Explore-AI

License: MIT License

 How I Built It

 1. Open-Source AI Architecture

The backend (
server/src/services/modelService.ts
) implements a clean Model Provider Abstraction (
IModelProvider
) that supports multiple open inference modes:

Hugging Face Inference Providers (Default): Runs open-weight models such as
google/vit-base-patch16-224
(Apache 2.0 license) or
Qwen/Qwen2-VL-7B-Instruct
via hosted inference endpoints.

Local Air-Gapped Inference with Ollama: When enabled via
LOCAL_MODEL_ENABLED=true
, requests route to a locally running Ollama instance (
http://localhost:11434/api/generate
) with
llava
or
minicpm-v
. This allows 100% offline species identification deep in forests or mountains without cellular reception.

Verified Biological Taxonomy Reference Engine: Provides an offline fallback taxonomy database for instant development, demonstration, and reliable automated testing.

 2. Separation of Concerns & Security

Backend API Proxy: The Express backend acts as an isolation barrier. API tokens (
HF_API_TOKEN
) never leak into client-side Vite bundles.

Strict Validation: Incoming requests and images are strictly validated with Zod (checking MIME types and enforcing a 10MB file limit).

Graceful Storage Optimization: To prevent
localStorage
quota errors (typically 5MB), client-side canvas routines in
lib/utils.ts
downscale uploaded photos to compact thumbnails before persisting journal records.

 3. Testing & Verification

The project includes automated tests using Vitest and React Testing Library:

File validation & MIME rejection tests (
src/__tests__/validation.test.ts
)

Journal save, filter, and delete tests (
src/__tests__/journal.test.ts
)

Outdoor activity toggle & random generator tests (
src/__tests__/activities.test.ts
)

 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation is essential when building technology designed for the natural world:

True Privacy in the Wild: Commercial closed-source vision APIs log user prompts, images, and geolocation to train proprietary models. Nature lovers and families deserve the freedom to photograph local flora and fauna without corporate surveillance.

Offline Independence: Nature exists beyond cell towers. Closed APIs fail the moment you lose LTE connection. Open-weight models (via Ollama or ONNX/Transformers.js) can run directly on consumer laptops and edge devices anywhere on Earth.

Ecological Safety & Transparency: Proprietary black boxes can produce unpredictable, confident hallucinations without accountability. With open-weight architectures, researchers and communities can inspect classification weights, calibrate confidence metrics, and enforce strict disclaimers against hazardous foraging.

Democratized Environmental Education: Open-source AI eliminates per-token API paywalls, allowing schools, non-profits, and park rangers to deploy biodiversity tools at zero software cost.

 My Agent Session

This project was built iteratively with pair-programming assistance from the AI agent:

Architecture design of the provider abstraction (
IModelProvider
).

Development of nature-tailored CSS design tokens (forest, sage, cream).

Implementation of client-side canvas image thumbnailing to protect
localStorage
quotas.

Creation of the automated test suite with Vitest.

 Running Locally:

Clone the repository and open
index.html
directly in any web browser:

RoomieBites solves…

View on GitHub

🔗 GitHub Repository: https://github.com/KaushalTukadiya-Creator/RoomieBites

The project is built cleanly with zero bloat, emphasizing maximum performance, responsive accessibility, and zero-setup deployment.

Frontend Core: Semantic HTML5 with tabbed views, modal dialogs, and ARIA attributes for screen-reader accessibility.

Styling: Tailored Vanilla CSS with glassmorphism, responsive grid/flexbox layouts, modern typography (Outfit & Plus Jakarta Sans), and dedicated
@media print
styling for paper or PDF grocery sheets.
