Stenciling vs Papercrafts on KDP: Why ~15 Median Reviews != an Empty Craft Niche

Soft takeaway first: on a 2026-11-02 list snapshot, Amazon Books Stenciling (deepest browse node under Papercrafts) shows Best Sellers median reviews ~15, median price $9.99, new-release share ~27%. The parent Papercrafts, Stamping & Stenciling node jumps to median reviews ~493 with NR share ~15%. Same tree. Different barrier.

That is not “underserved niche = easy money.” Best Sellers titles in Stenciling are mostly Halloween pumpkin carving stencil books, and keyword traffic for pumpkin stencil is real (~9k monthly searches on the same pull). Low reviews + demand + NR share + price is the stack. Low reviews alone is how you walk into a sibling trap like Rubber Stamping (median reviews ~5, demand component ~0).

This post is the metric version of that claim.

Raw score before confidence shaping on Stenciling Best Sellers is higher (~64) than the displayed opportunity (~37). Parent raw sits near the displayed number (~34). Rubber Stamping’s raw can look “fine” (~70) while opportunity stays in the mid-20s — another reason not to screenshot one orange number.

  Segment cut: how-to × adult

Category totals mix coloring pollution, kids activity packs, and true how-tos. Segment the Stenciling node:

+0.20

0.00

0.09

−0.09

Reading order:

Demand exists on Stenciling (non-zero demand component; pumpkin titles dominate BS/NR; keyword pumpkin stencil score ~72 with ~9k searches).

Review barrier is moderate, not zero — median 15 on the category Best Sellers, 11 on how-to × adult.

NR share is the rotation signal — ~27% category / ~53% how-to×adult vs ~15% / ~29% on the parent.

Price band is stable around $9.99 (p25–p75 roughly $9.99–$11.99 on Stenciling BS).

Sibling Rubber Stamping shows why “median reviews = 5” is insufficient: demand component and median daily units ~0.

Wording note: tools sometimes call end-of-tree browse nodes “leaves.” Here that only means the deepest Amazon category node under the Papercrafts path — not a metaphor and not code for “nobody sells here.”

How to read the parts (craft-tree edition)

On these category cards, opportunity is a weighted blend roughly of competition, low-review share, turnover, new-release ratio, and price fit — with demand / daily-units feeding the story even when they are not the loudest weight.

Stenciling BS (approx components):
  competition ~0.94
  low_review_share ~0.78
  turnover ~0.50
  new_release_ratio ~0.27
  price ~0.41
  demand ~0.36
  median_daily_units ~0.90 # present, not a flood

Rubber Stamping BS:
  competition ~1.00
  low_review_share ~0.90
  new_release_ratio ~0.06
  demand ~0.00 # the trap
  median_daily_units ~0.00

Parent Papercrafts flips the shape: demand near 1.0, competition mid, low-review share weak (~0.22), median reviews in the hundreds. Bigger aisle. Harder newcomer math.

List pollution matters too: Stenciling Best Sellers can include an adult swear-word coloring title near the top. Always read titles, not only medians.

  Practical check sequence

Open Stenciling and the parent Papercrafts node (
6383011011
) on the same day — compare median reviews (~15 vs ~493) and NR share.

Open how-to × adult segments, find the Stenciling row (~79.7 / reviews ~11 / NR ~0.53), and compare to the parent how-to×adult row.

Sanity-check sibling Rubber Stamping: if demand/daily units are flat, do not treat low reviews as a green light. Decide calendar from pumpkin/Halloween titles, not the craft label alone — early November is late for this U.S. season.

  Soft close

Stenciling on this snapshot = seasonal pumpkin demand + moderate review barrier + workable NR share + $9.99 price. Papercrafts parent = louder demand + ~500-review wall. Rubber Stamping = low reviews without demand.

Score ≠ empty. Empty without sales ≠ opportunity.

Data: KDPTop
get_category
/
find_segments
/
get_bestseller_list
/
find_keywords
pulls for nodes 5179, 6383011011, 3221481; list metrics dated 2026-11-02; article files under
/workspace/kdptop-seo/data-20261103/
(2026-11-03 Asia/Shanghai).

Kids Coloring on KDP by Age Band: Why 6–8 Scores ~81 and 9–12 Does Not

Soft takeaway first: on 2026-11-02, coloring × ages 6–8 still looks enterable for a new indie (score 80.7, median reviews 3). Coloring × ages 9–12 is the same book_type with a much higher review barrier (median reviews 20, score 69.7). Vague “kids coloring” (unfiltered coloring niche) looks hottest on score alone — and is the worst brief if you treat it as a single upload target.

This post is the metric version of that claim.

  What we pulled

From KDPTop niches (
book_type=coloring
×
age_band
), same day:

Same
book_type
. Different
age_band
. Different barriers. Price barely moves (~$9.99 across the kids bands); reviews and breakouts do.

Why score and “kids coloring is busy” disagree

The unfiltered coloring niche looks like the winner (score 84.4, ~2k est. daily units). Score is doing market-size work there. For a newcomer brief it is noisy: preschool, elementary, gift, and licensed titles share one bucket.

Segment by age and the story clarifies:

6–8: barrier part 0.988, breakout 1.0, influx 1.0, demand 0.837, feasible 0.963, indie 0.809 → total ~80.7

3–5: barrier 0.984, breakout 0.983, influx 1.0, demand 0.827 → total ~80.1 (near twin; fewer breakouts)

9–12: barrier 0.926, breakout 0.704, influx 0.812, demand 0.788, indie 0.743 → total ~69.7

adult (this age_band coloring cut): demand 0.356, breakout 0.343, influx 0.471, barrier 0.836 → total ~48.9 (small sample, weak shelf vs kids bands)

In this schema, higher
barrier
≈ friendlier review climate (low median reviews). 6–8 is near the ceiling. 9–12 still “good” on barrier relative to many adult puzzle leaves, but median reviews of 20 vs 3 is the commercial tax parents never see on the cover.

Themes also split: 6–8 skews animals / bible / culture / christmas / sports / travel / dinosaurs; 9–12 skews fashion / history / animals / sports / nature; 3–5 skews animals / trucks / alphabet / vehicles. Same verb (“coloring”), different product density.

How to read the parts (age_band edition)

Opportunity on these niches is not “search volume for kids coloring book.” It is a composite of structure parts you can inspect on the niche card:

parts ≈ indie, price, demand, influx, barrier, breakout, feasible
score ≈ weighted blend of those parts (displayed 0–100)

Practical reading for low-content operators:

barrier — rises when median reviews fall. 6–8 (~3 reviews) vs 9–12 (~20) is the headline contrast.

breakout / influx — NR→BS velocity and new-title pressure. 6–8 maxes both on this snapshot; 9–12 cools off.

demand — est. daily units / market heat. Kids bands stay high; adult coloring in this cut collapses.

price — flat here (~0.33 contribution at a $9.99 median). Do not invent a “9–12 pays more” story from this dataset.

indie / feasible — can a KDP paperback live here? All kids bands clear; use them as a sanity check, not the whole go/wait.

Breakouts are a velocity primitive (first seen on New Releases, later on Best Sellers). 111 breakouts on 6–8 vs 29 on 9–12 is why “sweet spot” is not just a vibe word.

  Reproduction

Open coloring × 6–8 and coloring × 9–12.

Compare
score
,
median_reviews
,
median_price
,
est_daily_sales
,
breakouts
, and
parts
.

Optionally pull
get_niche
with
book_type=coloring
and
age_band=6-8|3-5|9-12|adult
, or
find_niches
filtered to coloring, via the KDPTop MCP/API.

Snapshot date: 2026-11-02 Asia/Shanghai. Estimates from tracked Best Sellers / New Releases lists. Adult coloring row is a thin sample (48 books) — treat as contrast, not a deep adult-market study.

Christmas Puzzles vs Word Search on KDP: Same Holiday, Different Review Barrier

Soft takeaway first: on 2026-10-30, Christmas × puzzle/logic still looks enterable for a new indie; Christmas × word search does not look like the same door, even though both niches share a December peak and a "now" launch window.

This post is the metric version of that claim.

  What we pulled

From KDPTop niches (book_type × occasion), same day:

Niche

Score

Median reviews

Median price

Est. daily sales (niche)

Window

Christmas × puzzle_logic

72.2

18.5

$12.99

~165

now (Sep–Oct, peak Dec)

Christmas × activity_mixed

68.4

22.5

$12.99

~100

now

Christmas × coloring

71.9

4.0

$9.99

~148

now

Christmas × coloring_adult

67.3

21.0

$9.99

~675

late (peak Nov)

Christmas × word_search

58.8

51.5

$5.99

~87

now

Same occasion code (
christmas
). Different book_type codes. Different barriers.

Why score and "feels busy" disagree

Word search looks busy in Amazon search (main phrases in the thousands of monthly searches; large-print and seniors variants stack more reviews). Score still lands in the high 50s because:

Barrier: median reviews ~52 vs ~18.5 for puzzle_logic

Price: $5.99 median vs $12.99

Influx / breakout: both niches still show breakouts, so timing alone does not explain the gap

Puzzle_logic themes on the tracked set skew murder mystery, escape room, advent logic, sudoku - products that support a higher price and do not inherit the large-print word-search incumbents.

Coloring is the control group: overall Christmas coloring stays now with a very low review median (~4), while adult Christmas coloring flips to late with a November peak. Holiday timing is not one number.

  How to read the parts

On puzzle_logic Christmas, score parts roughly say: timing maxed, breakout maxed, barrier high (good for entrants), feasible ~1.0, demand solid but not maxed. On word_search Christmas, barrier is worse and price contribution collapses. Demand from search keywords is not enough to lift the total when the review wall and $5.99 race dominate.

That is the same pattern as the earlier Word Search leaf write-up: opportunity score is not search volume. Here the disagreement is inside one holiday across book types.

  Reproduction

Open Christmas × puzzle_logic and Christmas × word_search.

Compare score, median reviews, median price, and window.status.

Optionally pull
find_niches
with
occasion=christmas
and
book_type=puzzle_logic,word_search
via the KDPTop MCP/API.

Word Search on KDP: Why Opportunity Score and Review Barrier Disagree

If you only sort Amazon categories by “opportunity,” Word Search looks like a trap. The main leaf under Puzzles & Games scores in the mid-30s. Median Best Sellers reviews sit in the hundreds. Turnover is quiet. New-release share on the Best Sellers list is thin.

If you only sort by keyword demand, Word Search looks like a gold rush. Adult word-search phrases still pull on the order of ~272K monthly searches in the tracked pool. Est. daily units on the leaf are not zero.

Both reads are incomplete. The useful move is to separate leaf opportunity, segment opportunity, and review barrier — then watch how the same
book_type
behaves when you change the aisle.

The leaf numbers (Word Search, node 4455)

As of the 2026-10-30 Best Sellers snapshot:

Signal

Value

Category opportunity score

34.5

Median price

$9.91

Median reviews

430

New-release ratio

14%

Top 100 turnover

9%

Demand component

maxed

Competition / low-review components

weak

Demand is not the bottleneck. Review barrier is. A new large-print book dropping into the generic Word Search Best Sellers list is competing with titles that already collected hundreds or thousands of reviews. Score formulas that reward low median reviews will punish this leaf even when search volume is healthy.

That is the first lesson: high search ≠ high opportunity score. The score is doing its job when it refuses to celebrate a crowded aisle.

  Same book_type, different segment score

find_segments
for
book_type=word_search
tells a different story once you leave the main puzzle leaf.

One of the strongest adult segments today sits under a health aisle — Eye Problems × word_search × adult — with a segment score around 74.1, median reviews around 25, and a barrier component near 0.91 (higher barrier score = easier review climate in this schema). Themes skew large-print, everyday, relaxation. Est. daily sales on that segment are material, and the shopper keyword pool still overlaps the big adult word-search demand.

Nearby Alzheimer’s / memory activity placements rhyme with the same pattern: mid-20s median reviews, strong barrier component, score in the high 60s.

Meanwhile, the Word Search leaf’s own teen slice can show high sales with median reviews in the 600s and a low barrier component (~0.29). Velocity without accessibility. Murder-mystery and “kill grid” styles are climbing the main chart — interesting product design — but they do not erase the review wall for a plain generic upload.

How the score is put together (practical reading)

At category level, opportunity is roughly:

weighted(competition, low_review_share, turnover, new_release_ratio, price)
  × demand_factor(median_daily_units)

Typical weights put the heaviest hand on competition and low_review_share, then turnover, then new-release ratio and price. Demand is often a multiplier: strong units can lift a middling structure score; weak units can crush a “easy reviews” leaf into irrelevance (craft stenciling is a useful foil — low reviews, soft demand).

On segments, you get extra parts that matter for low-content operators:

barrier
— rises when median reviews fall

momentum
— New Releases share minus Best Sellers share for that book_type × age

indie
/
feasible
— can a KDP paperback realistically live here?

kw_searches
— Amazon search demand for the book-type language, not the category name alone

Breakouts are a separate velocity primitive: first seen on New Releases, later observed on Best Sellers within N days. Useful for spotting formats that are currently converting attention into rank — not for declaring a whole category “easy.”

A small method you can reuse

Pull the leaf
get_category
score and median reviews.

Pull
find_segments
for the same
book_type
(and age band if you know it).

Sort once by
score
, once by
reviews
(or filter
max_reviews
).

Only trust a “go” when segment barrier is high, leaf or segment demand is real, and the themes match a cover you can actually defend in Look Inside.

Use
get_breakouts
as a spice check — which products crossed NR → BS recently — not as the whole meal.

For Word Search today, that method says: do not romanticize the main leaf’s search volume; do inspect large-print / memory / adjacent-theme placements where median reviews collapse from ~430 to ~25 while the keyword pool stays wide.

  What this is not

This is not medical advice, and “Eye Problems” as a browse node is not a license to make health claims on a cover. It is a placement and competition observation: Amazon’s tree sometimes parks puzzle books next to audiences who buy large-print activity books, and those pockets currently show a friendlier review climate than the flagship Word Search leaf.

Also not a promise that every themed word search will chart. Sample sizes on thin segments can lie. Prefer segments that are not marked low-sample, and sanity-check the actual Best Sellers covers before you clear your weekend.

  Takeaway for builders

Opportunity score without review barrier is a vanity metric. Review barrier without demand is a ghost town. Word Search is a clean teaching case because both signals are loud and they point at different shelves.

If you are instrumenting your own KDP research — MCP, scrapers, or a notebook — store leaf score, segment score, median reviews, and kw_searches as separate columns. Collapsing them into one “hot niche” boolean is how people upload into a 430-review median and then blame the algorithm.

Data: KDPTop
get_category
for node 4455 and
find_segments
for
book_type=word_search
, 2026-10-30 (Asia/Shanghai). Estimates from tracked Amazon.com lists.

API surface if you want to reproduce the pulls: KDPTop · compare against the live Word Search Best Sellers chart.

You're Not Too Late for a Christmas Coloring Book. You're Too Late for One Kind.

It's October 30. Your Canva tabs are a mess of wreaths and half-finished snowmen. A friend in a KDP Facebook group swears the Christmas window closed in September. Another swears anything with "cozy" in the title still prints money until New Year's. You refresh Amazon, see the same big names, and close the laptop.

I used to treat that panic as a feeling. This year I treated it as a calendar question.

  Two Christmas niches, two clocks

On KDPTop's Christmas coloring niche, the broader "Christmas × coloring" slice still reads as on time. Peak demand sits in December. The tool's window for this niche opens around September and runs through October, with about two months left before the top of the curve. Median price on the tracked books is $9.99. Median reviews sit around eight or nine — low enough that a newcomer is not automatically invisible.

Flip to adult Christmas coloring, and the clock looks different. That slice peaks earlier (November more than December), and the same timing logic already labels it late. Demand is still real — adult holiday cozy pages move — but the people who win that shelf mostly uploaded weeks ago, stacked reviews, and now own the "cozy Christmas" search language.

Same holiday. Same word "coloring." Different deadline.

That distinction is the whole article. If you are deciding tonight whether to finish a file, do not ask "Is Christmas over for KDP?" Ask which Christmas you are actually publishing.

What late-October buyers are already clicking

You do not need a spreadsheet to see the pattern. Open the kids coloring Best Sellers and Christmas is already leaking into a Halloween-heavy chart: advent-style countdown books, gift-angled titles, and at least one big author shipping a holiday bundle instead of a single thin book.

Coco Wyo's Cozy Countdown advent coloring bundle is a useful example, not because you should copy the cover, but because of the shape. It is not "50 random Christmas line drawings." It is a countdown. Parents understand countdown. Gift buyers understand countdown. A bundle can sit at a higher price than a thin $7.99 paperback and still feel fair in December.

Search language backs the same idea. "Christmas coloring book" still pulls tens of thousands of monthly searches in the US. The more specific phrases — kids, advent, cozy, vintage — behave like different products. Late in the season, vague titles fight everyone. Specific titles fight a smaller room.

YoY interest in the main phrase is up, not down. The season is not dying. The generic end of it is crowded.

What I would still publish this week

Three rules I would actually follow if I were uploading before Monday:

1. Aim at kids or a clear countdown, not another adult cozy clone.

Adult Christmas coloring is already late on the calendar. Kids Christmas coloring and mixed advent/activity books still sit in the open window. If your art style is bold and easy, that helps — parents shopping for ages 3–8 do not want lace-fine linework.

2. Make the hook speakable in one sentence.

"25 pages, one for each day until Christmas" beats "beautiful Christmas coloring book for relaxation." Shoppers gift the first sentence. They scroll past the second.

3. Price like the shelf you want, then stop tweaking.

Most of the Christmas coloring niche clusters around $7.99–$9.99. A countdown or bundle can go higher if the page count and story justify it. Sitting at $5.99 "to be safe" usually just trains buyers to treat you as disposable.

I would also skip anything that needs brand IP, movie characters, or a joke that only works if the reader already knows your TikTok. Late season favors clear gifts, not inside jokes.

  What I would not force

I would not rush a me-too adult "cozy girl Christmas" book hoping to out-rank authors who have been collecting reviews since August. That race started without you.

I would not wait for the perfect 100-page masterpiece either. A tight 40–60 page kids book that ships this week will learn more from real buyers than a flawless file that lands in mid-November. November is when search interest spikes hard; December is the peak. You want a few early reviews before that spike, not during it.

And I would not read a low category opportunity score on a broad Christmas children's leaf as "don't publish." Broad holiday leaves are often review-heavy and brand-heavy. The useful signal lives one level down — in the book-type × occasion niche, not in the giant Christmas aisle average.

A note on the search curve

Interest in "christmas coloring book" does not rise in a straight line. It stays quiet through summer, tips up in September, jumps in October, then climbs hard in November before December. Uploading in late October means you are walking into the steep part of the hill with almost no runway for reviews.

That is why the kids/advent version still makes sense and the generic adult cozy version usually does not. Kids gift buyers forgive a thinner review count if the cover is clear. Adult cozy shoppers already have favorites with thousands of reviews staring back at them.

If you only have evenings free, finish one specific kids countdown this weekend. Do not open a second project called "also adult version." Split focus is how late-season uploads miss both windows.

  The quiet takeaway

Late October is not "too late for Christmas." It is too late for drifting Christmas.

If your draft is an adult cozy clone with no countdown, no age focus, and no gift sentence, close the file and start the January project. If your draft is a kids advent, a farm-animal Christmas, a nativity-with-careful-positioning book, or a bold-and-easy countdown parents can explain in the aisle, you still have a window — short, specific, and real.

Check the niche clock before you argue with your own anxiety. Then publish the version of Christmas that still has time left on it.

Data snapshot: 2026-10-30 from KDPTop niche timing and tracked Christmas coloring titles. Sales and search figures are estimates; Amazon links are evidence only.

Data snapshot: 2026-10-29 from the live KDPTop Fashion decision card (Amazon Books › Coloring Books for Grown-Ups › Fashion, node 14279716011). Public list: Amazon Best Sellers.

If you draw cute fashion pages and wonder whether another “bold & easy” book is worth the print run, open the product UI—not vibes. Below are screenshots from KDPTop for this leaf today.

  The decision card (from KDPTop)

33.5 / 100 (demand factor 0.36)

Real demand, not an empty gold rush

Price band

$9.99–$9.99 (median $9.99)

Stay on the $9.99 shelf unless you have a sneaker-style hook

Review barrier

61 (56% under 100 reviews)

Reachable, not free

Top 100 median daily sales

0.9 / day

Compare scale, not fantasy

New books in Top 100

14 (14% in 90 days)

Room for newcomers

Churn

23 books dropped in 2 days tracked

List rotates

Open the same card yourself: kdptop.com/categories/14279716011.

  Book type × age heatmap

On the segments / heatmap view filtered for fashion, Adult Coloring Book × Adults sits around opportunity 61, with 13–17 near 57 and 6–8 lower. That matches what the Best Sellers list looks like: bold & easy fashion pages aimed at teens and adults, not toddler picture books.

  What is actually selling

From the in-app Best Sellers tab / public Amazon chart (same day snapshot):

Pattern: bold & easy + cozy / cosmetics / seasonal, series authors stacking volumes, and one sneaker outlier above $9.99. Nail art can chart with almost no reviews.

Day-over-day on the card: 23 new / 23 dropped, Top 100 est. daily sales ~210, est. monthly revenue ~$53.1K (BSR-based, purchases only).

  Search demand (deep dive)

The Demand tab shows shopper search terms tied to this leaf. Full trend charts may sit behind paid unlock; the first terms are enough to see buyers are already searching fashion/coloring language—you still need a sharper hook than “fashion coloring book.”

  Where the cracks are

Nail art — Nailed It at #10 with 17 reviews.

Cosmetics / glow — Glow Cosmetics at #4.

Retro / Y2K / Black women fashion — recurring in niche tags.

Avoid brand/celebrity IP, over-complex couture linework, and me-too “cute girl daily life” clones.

If you still want to publish

Price at $9.99 unless the angle is as tangible as sneakers.

One sentence hook shoppers can say out loud.

Series-ready covers—the chart is owned by multi-volume brands.

Place under Fashion and twin a second leaf with KDPTop placement tools.

Re-open the decision card the week you upload.

  Bottom line

Fashion adult coloring is a Go with conditions: real $9.99 list, rotating Top 100, series inertia. A generic cute book is a coin flip; nail, sneaker, retro, or beauty-identity that still reads bold & easy matches what the 2026-10-29 chart rewards.

Start on KDPTop and cross-check Amazon’s Fashion coloring Best Sellers the same day you publish.
