Building Knowzup: Architecting a Social Knowledge Sharing Platform as a Solo Developer

How I built Knowzup from the ground up with React Native—and evolved it from an early Q&A concept into a broader platform for sharing knowledge and learning.

Most of us have searched the internet when we get stuck on a problem—whether it's a programming bug, a difficult academic concept, a technical question, or something from the real world.

Traditional platforms are often designed around a specific type of content or interaction. I wanted to build something more flexible: a platform where people could ask questions, share knowledge, explain concepts, create useful content, and learn from different formats.

That idea became Knowzup.

Knowzup is a social knowledge sharing and learning platform where users can create and discover knowledge-based content using text, images, and videos.

The goal isn't to restrict knowledge to one format or one subject. It's to make sharing and learning more flexible.

I started building Knowzup as a solo developer, and over time the project has grown considerably beyond its original concept.

This is an updated look at the architecture, technology, product evolution, and lessons I've learned while building it.

The Tech Stack: Why React Native?

Knowzup needs to provide a consistent experience across mobile devices while still allowing access to native capabilities.

I chose React Native with the Expo ecosystem because it allowed me to build the application using a shared codebase while still working with native functionality when necessary.

The stack has made it practical for me to iterate quickly as a solo developer. Instead of maintaining completely separate Android and iOS codebases, I can spend more time working on the actual product.

That doesn't mean cross-platform development is effortless.

Things such as native modules, WebViews, notifications, multimedia handling, background processing, authentication, and release builds can introduce problems that don't always appear during development.

I've had to deal with those problems firsthand, including release-specific WebView issues, large multimedia uploads, notification handling, authentication flows, and performance on lower-end devices.

For a solo developer, those engineering problems are part of the product-building process—not something that can simply be ignored.

 Architecting for Flexible Content

One of the biggest changes in Knowzup's development has been moving away from thinking of the platform as simply a Q&A application.

The original concept was heavily focused on questions and answers. That made sense as a starting point, but it also created an unnecessary limitation.

Knowledge doesn't always fit into a question-and-answer structure.

Sometimes someone wants to:

Explain a concept

Share a tutorial

Ask a question

Provide an answer

Post an interesting piece of knowledge

Share an image

Demonstrate something through video

Start a discussion

So the underlying content model is designed to support different types of posts and interactions rather than forcing everything into a single format.

Knowzup currently supports content involving text, images, and video, allowing users to choose the format that makes the most sense for what they want to communicate.

This also creates additional engineering challenges.

Multimedia requires careful handling of:

Asynchronous uploads

Storage

Video processing and delivery

Network failures

Memory usage

Responsive UI rendering

Caching

Authentication

Permissions

Content validation

Building these systems as a solo developer has taught me that supporting a feature isn't just about making the UI work. The infrastructure behind it matters just as much.

Designing the Content and Interaction Model

Knowzup's architecture treats posts and their responses as connected pieces of the same knowledge system.

Users can interact with content through actions such as helpful feedback, accepted responses, saving, following, reporting, and other engagement mechanisms.

There is also a reputation system designed around user contributions and interactions.

The purpose isn't simply to turn the platform into a game. The idea is to gradually create signals that can help users understand which accounts are contributing useful content and which content has received meaningful interaction.

I've also implemented moderation and safety mechanisms such as reporting and blocking, along with account-management and authentication improvements.

These systems become increasingly important as a platform moves from being a prototype toward real-world usage.

 From Prototype to Production

One of the biggest lessons I've learned while building Knowzup is that building features is only one part of building an application.

A prototype can work perfectly on the developer's device and still fail when real users interact with it.

During testing, I encountered and fixed issues involving things such as:

Large video uploads causing memory problems

OTP verification

Reply-card reporting crashes

Authentication flows

Multimedia handling

Notification processing

UI/UX issues

Data validation

Account management

I also added features such as:

User blocking

Reporting

Account deletion

Improved authentication

Google sign-in

Additional security and validation mechanisms

For monitoring and debugging production issues, I use Firebase tooling including Crashlytics and analytics-related services.

The testing process has been particularly valuable because real users find problems that are very easy to miss during development.

Building Knowzup as a Solo Developer

Building a product alone forces you to make trade-offs constantly.

There are always more features to build than there is time to build them.

Earlier in the project, I had a much larger list of planned features and spent a lot of time thinking about what the platform could eventually become.

Over time, I've learned to separate three things:

What sounds interesting.

What users actually need.

What I can realistically build and maintain.

That distinction has changed how I approach Knowzup.

Instead of trying to build every possible feature immediately, I focus on creating a solid foundation and then expanding the platform based on actual requirements and feedback.

 What's Next for Knowzup?

Knowzup is no longer at the stage where the main goal is simply proving that the concept works.

The focus now is on improving the existing platform and making it more useful, reliable, and scalable.

 Better Content Discovery

As more content is added, discovery becomes increasingly important.

Search, feeds, categories, unanswered content, and recommendation-related systems need to work together so users can find useful knowledge without being overwhelmed by irrelevant content.

 Better Multimedia Support

Video and image-based content introduce completely different engineering requirements from ordinary text posts.

Improving upload reliability, processing, playback, storage efficiency, and performance remains an ongoing area of development.

 Reputation and Content Quality

Knowzup has a reputation system that reflects different types of user interaction and contribution.

The challenge is making reputation meaningful without allowing simple engagement numbers to become the only measure of content quality.

 Scalability

A system that works for a small testing group doesn't automatically work at a much larger scale.

Database queries, caching, notifications, multimedia storage, video delivery, API performance, and background processing all need to be considered as the platform grows.

 Improving the Web Experience

Knowzup also has a web presence designed to make public content accessible outside the mobile application.

Making content discoverable through search engines introduces another engineering challenge: pages need to provide meaningful server-rendered content rather than depending entirely on client-side JavaScript.

This has led me to work on server-side rendering, metadata, structured pages, URLs, sitemaps, and other aspects of technical SEO.

What Building Knowzup Has Taught Me

The biggest lesson hasn't been a specific framework or database.

It has been learning how many different engineering problems are hidden behind what looks like a simple feature.

A button that uploads a video involves:

storage → networking → memory management → authentication → error handling → background processing → video delivery

A notification involves:

database state → scheduling → deduplication → user preferences → device tokens → background workers

A search box involves:

indexing → ranking → query performance → caching → relevance

That's what makes building a real product so different from building isolated projects.

You don't just build features.

You build systems.

 What's Different About Knowzup?

Knowzup started with a simple question:

What if knowledge sharing wasn't restricted to one type of content or one type of platform?

The answer is still evolving.

Knowzup isn't intended to be just a video platform, a traditional Q&A website, or a developer-only community.

It is being built as a social knowledge sharing and learning platform where different forms of useful knowledge can exist together.

There is still a lot to improve, but the project has already moved a long way from its original prototype.

And I'm continuing to build it.

 Let's Connect

Knowzup is being developed independently, so feedback from developers, students, creators, and early users is valuable.

If you try the platform, I'd be interested in hearing about:

UI/UX issues

Bugs

Performance problems

Confusing workflows

Missing features

Ideas for improving knowledge discovery

Knowzup: knowzup.rf.gd

GitHub: github.com/official-Hypercodez

If you've been following the project from its earlier stages, you'll notice that Knowzup has changed significantly.

This article is an updated look at where the project is now—and where I'm taking it next.

I started building Knowzup several years ago, initially around the idea of making questions, answers, and problem-solving more flexible. Since then, the project has evolved into something broader.

Knowzup is a social knowledge sharing and learning platform where people can ask questions, share knowledge, create content, and learn through text, images, and videos.

I’ve built most of it myself, including the mobile application, backend, database architecture, authentication, multimedia handling, search, notifications, and web experience.

And yes, a lot of the early development happened on an old 2011 HP laptop.

 Why I started building it

I kept running into a simple problem:

Knowledge doesn't always fit into one format.

A programming problem might need code and an explanation.

A physics concept might be easier to understand with a diagram.

A technical issue might be better demonstrated through a video.

Someone might simply want to share something useful without asking a question at all.

Existing platforms often work extremely well for a particular type of content, but I wanted to experiment with a more flexible approach.

Instead of building another platform focused on only one content format, I wanted Knowzup to support different ways of sharing and discovering knowledge.

 What users can do

Users can:

Ask questions

Share knowledge and information

Create general content

Post text, images, and videos

Reply to posts using different media formats

Search and discover content

Find unanswered questions

Save and follow useful content

Report or block users

Build reputation through their contributions and interactions

The idea is simple:

If you have something useful to explain, Knowzup should give you a place to explain it in the format that makes the most sense.

One idea I'm particularly interested in

One of the problems I want Knowzup to address is the knowledge that doesn't exist yet.

Someone can search for a topic and find nothing useful.

Instead of that search simply ending there, I’m interested in turning unanswered questions and knowledge gaps into opportunities for other users to contribute.

For example:

Someone asks a question that hasn't been answered yet.

That question can remain discoverable so another user can eventually provide an explanation, tutorial, image, or video.

The goal is to make unanswered knowledge visible instead of forgotten.

 AI and discovery

I've also started integrating AI into parts of the platform where it can provide practical value.

For example, AI can assist with the initial response to newly created content and help improve the overall knowledge-discovery experience.

I'm deliberately treating AI as part of the infrastructure rather than making "AI" the entire identity of Knowzup.

The main product is still about people sharing and discovering knowledge.

Some of the technology I've built

The current system includes things such as:

Multimedia posts and replies

Voting and reputation systems

Accepted/helpful content mechanisms

Search and vector-based discovery

Push notifications

Authentication with access and refresh tokens

Google sign-in

Redis-based services

Firebase Crashlytics and analytics

Admin and moderation controls

User blocking and reporting

Account deletion and anonymization

Server-rendered web pages for public content

Technical SEO infrastructure

Multimedia upload and delivery systems

The technology stack includes:

React Native, React, Node.js, Express.js, TypeScript, MongoDB, MySQL, Redis, Firebase, Python, C++, and more.

What I've learned building it alone

The hardest part hasn't been writing individual features.

It's making all the pieces work together.

A seemingly simple feature such as video uploading involves:

authentication → upload → storage → processing → database → playback → error handling

Notifications involve:

database state → device tokens → scheduling → deduplication → background processing

And making public content discoverable through search engines requires thinking about:

server-side rendering → metadata → URLs → structured content → sitemaps → crawling

Building a real product has taught me that the difficult part isn't just making something work.

It's making it reliable, maintainable, and useful to someone other than yourself.

 Now I want honest feedback

Knowzup has moved far beyond the original prototype, and I'm continuing to improve it.

So I'm interested in hearing what people actually think.

Not motivation.

Not "looks cool."

Actual criticism is more useful.

I'd especially like to know:

Would you genuinely use a platform like this?

Which part of the concept makes the most sense to you?

Which feature feels unnecessary or over-engineered?

What would make you trust a new knowledge-sharing platform?

What problems do existing learning or knowledge-sharing platforms still leave unsolved?

What would make you stop using an app like this?

Does the broader "social knowledge sharing and learning" concept make sense, or does it feel too broad?

I'm completely open to technical criticism, product criticism, UX feedback, and feature suggestions.
