This list is made up of the most common mistakes I've witnessed during nearly a decade of teaching beginning web development students.

My idea for writing this article is not to make fun of beginner mistakes or embarrass anyone who is a beginner.

Rather, my goal is to educate beginners and hopefully save them from some of these common mistakes.

We Were All Beginners
If you aren't a beginner, you may think the mistakes listed below are obvious... but remember, obviousness is relative to experience.

Once upon a time, those of us with experience struggled with some of these mistakes, too.

If you are a beginner, I hope this list saves you some time and anxiety in the near future.

Mistake #5: Adding Spaces in File Names
You may save your HTML file with the name "my cool page.html", but those spaces between words are a mistake.

Web addresses (aka URLs) cannot have spaces.

If you load this file into your browser, you are going to see "my%20cool%20page.html" in the browser address bar. Spaces must be encoded because they are not allowed in URLs.

If you want to see separation between the words in your file names, use an underscore (my_cool_page.html) or a hyphen (my-cool-page.html).

As a beginner, you probably aren't too worried about search engine optimization (SEO), but Google has noted they prefer hyphens in file names over underscores.

Mistake #4: Ignoring cAsE sEnSiTiViTy
If you are using Windows for your development environment, you might not notice a problem when you inconsistently use lowercase and capital letters. This is a mistake.

Let's say you created a CSS folder named "Css" and a file within it named "Main.css". But in your code, you link to it like this:

While you're working on your project, there is no problem.

But when you load your project to a web server...Boom! No CSS is applied.

Many web servers have some version of Linux or Unix running instead of Windows. You may have heard of the LAMP stack. Linux is the L in LAMP.

These systems are case sensitive.

Therefore, it is best to use lowercase file names and directory names all the time unless there is a specific naming convention that uses a capital letter. At that point, the file names will still always be consistent. And consistency is what will prevent this mistake.

Mistake #3: Not Understanding File Paths
Students that do not understand how to link files within different directories often dump all their files in the root directory in order to access them. This is a mistake that leads to an unorganized file tree.

Not long after you start learning HTML, you start learning how to link to other HTML and CSS files.

This is fairly straightforward when the files are in the same directory. Even in the example above, we just looked inside the CSS directory for the main.css file.

It starts to get more complicated when we need to go up a directory instead of (or before) going down into one.

In the example below, we are setting the background-image for a web page in our main.css file. The main.css file is in the CSS directory. We are linking to an image in the img directory.

Both of these directories (aka folders) are in the root directory. Therefore, we need to go up and out of the CSS directory and then down into the img directory.

We go up one directory with two dots: ".."

From there, we go down into the img directory to link to the moon.png file.

If we needed to go up two directories, the file path would start like this: "../../"

Remember, one dot indicates the directory you are in. Two dots indicates the directory above where you currently are.

Mistake #2: Not Naming Your Default Page Index
Naming your default page something other than "index" is a mistake.

Web servers look for an index file.

When you're working with HTML, you should have an index.html file.

This file will load by default without showing the file name at the end of the URL.

That's why you can go to your favorite dot com or other web address and not see "/index.html" after their ".com". The index file loads by default.

Granted, your favorite website may use more than just HTML, but this concept carries over to other technologies like PHP (index.php), React (index.js), and more.

As you continue to learn, you will find some developers choose other file names when utilizing other technologies, but as a beginner, stick with index.

Mistake #1: Not Taking A Break!
I receive emails when students are frustrated.

They have poured over their project for hours and cannot find the error.

Often, the problem is a misspelled tag or variable, a missing semi-colon, or other small syntax error.

This happens to us all.

After staring at code for an extended time period, our vision blurs, our brains fizzle, and what would have been easy to see with fresh eyes becomes impossible.

Don't feel bad. Don't blame yourself. Just get up!

Take a walk. Get some coffee. Take a nap. Whatever snaps you out of the haziness and gives you fresh eyes and a clear head again.

Really, this mistake isn't just for beginners. It can happen to anyone.

I must remind myself to take breaks, too.

Come back to the code when you are refreshed and that error you couldn't find will often be obvious!

Conclusion
As you gain experience, you will quickly move past these common mistakes.

What was once difficult to understand will become clear.

Convert your Laravel application to SaaS

You had made an application with Laravel for a customer. Thanks for the rapid development speed provided by Laravel, you finished the job quickly and your customer was quite satisfied, and this customer even recommended the application to others who have the same problem. Although the application was designed for a single customer at the beginning, that’s not a problem: you just need to deploy a new one when a new customer comes.

You were lucky enough that more and more customers came, but you also found it’s harder and harder to maintain many deployments. Then you wanted to resolve this happiness trouble, you searched “Laravel multi-tenancy” or “Laravel SaaS” via Google and found some packages that may help, but unfortunately, they might require your table have a column like “tenant_id” …
If you are in the same situation as I was once, I hope this article can give you some idea on how to convert your application to a multi-tenancy one without touching your database.
The Application
Several years ago, a friend of mine asked me to develop an application to simplify his work at the hospital. This application would be used for managing education activities, should have an admin UI for administrators to manage data, and a mobile web UI for students’ usage.
The architecture of the application was rather straight forward:
The frontend was in AngularJs 1.x;
The backend was in Laravel 4.2;
A single MySQL 5.5 database.
Redis, Queues, … all were unnecessary. The development was finished in a couple of days. The application worked well for the hospital, word of mouth helped us gained more hospitals over time. Although many features have been added over the years, the architecture remains the same. It’s simple.

Convert It to SaaS
With more deployments done, we started to learn how others do their SaaS applications. Microsoft has a good article on this topic here (I can’t find the original article we read, but this one has similar content), we identified that we were actually in the “Standalone single-tenant” model, and we wanted to migrate to “Database-per-tenant” model. “Sharded-multi-tenant” requires column like “tenant_id” to be added in tables, that could involve too much modifications and we don’t want this.
Our target was to deploy a single copy of application per server. When serving requests, the application could load proper database and application configuration dynamically for the requested hospital. We found there are Laravel packages trying to resolve multi-tenancy issue, but after some try we decided to do it without 3-rd party packages to make the solution simple and clear.
The following sections describe how we did it.
Detect Tenant Information At Runtime
First we need to detect the tenant information to correctly load tenant configuration. There are two points to check:
HTTP request handling;
Console command execution (e.g., artisan commands, queue workers, scheduled jobs).
For HTTP request handling, we can detect the tenant by keywords in the URL. In our case every customer has its own domain, so we use domain to make this detection.
For console commands, we can provide commands an extra option (--tenant) to specify the tenant manually.

Adding “--tenant” Option to All Artisan Commands
Some Laravel multi-tenancy packages provide commands to migrate database. For example, some package has the following command:
php artisan tenants:migrate --tenants=8075a580-1cb8-11e9-8822-49c5d8f8ff23
This is ok but the syntax is not that elegant to us. What if we can have these:
php artisan --tenant=A migrate
php artisan --tenant=B queue:work
php artisan --tenant=C schedule
php artisan --tenant=D
This syntax is much easier to remember as all Laravel developers are familiar with it :).
“--tenant” option can be added by overriding getArtisan method in App\Console\Kernel class. This is inspired by digging into the implementation of “--env” option. Now all artisan commands have “--tenant” option, the detectConsole method of TenantDetector class above demonstrates how to read it.

Add — tenant option to all Laravel commands
Load Application Configuration Dynamically
Now tenant can be detected, the next step is to load the tenant’s configuration. Laravel’s Config facade could be used for changing configurations at runtime, like below:
$tenant = (new TenantDetector)->detect(app());
$tenantConnection = $this->getTenantConnection($tenant);
Config::set('database.connection', $tenantConnection);
However, this means you have to add such snippet to all HTTP request or command handling logic. Use HTTP middleware or service provider can simplify this work, but that’s far from ideal:
We need to be careful on the order of HTTP middlewares or service providers, the configuration loading logic should be ran before any other codes that depend on the configuration;
We can’t add this to Laravel builtin commands, such as php artisan migrate.
Laravel uses Illuminate\Foundation\Bootstrap\LoadConfiguration class to load configuration on each time it bootstraps. This class is added into the bootstraper arrays of HTTPKernel and ConsoleKernel. Fortunately, bootstraper arrays of both kernels are customizable, our best choice is to add a LoadTenantConfiguration class, and add it into the bootstrap arrays right after LoadConfiguration class.

Load configuration dynamically based on detected tenant
In our case the database and password are configured in a fixed pattern, so this method is simple here. You can customize loadConfiguration as you wish, e.g., load the configuration from a central database or load any other tenant specific configurations.
The bootstrap code above checks if the application is running artisan config:cache command. We won’t want tenant specific configuration be saved in the config cache, as config cache should only contains common configurations for all tenants.
Command Scheduling
Now you can add tenant in schedule command like below:

As Laravel start a new process to execute scheduled command, tenant parameter needs to be passed into schedule command manually. So we need to update App\Console\Kernel like below:

As queue workers are started by artisan command, we also need to add tenant information in the command to make sure it loads proper configurations:

Now the real question rises which one is better?

Context Switches: User has to continuously switch between different languages and syntax in PHP, while in Node.JS there is no such problem as written in JavaScript. We all are aware that JavaScript is a better coding language.
Modules: The moduling system used in PHP is PEAR, a framework used for reusable components and Composer, a tool that allows declaring libraries and installing them for users. While Node.JS uses NPM (Node Package Manager), a complete package management system that is easy to use
Frameworks: Node.JS uses frameworks like Express, Meteor, and Derby, which are very popular, and many new frameworks have also arrived in Node.JS like koa.js, Hapi, total.js, sails.js, Etc. In comparison, PHP uses a framework like Laravel, CakePHP, Codelgniter.
Databases: Node.JS uses MongoDB, CouchDB, and Neo4j, which are new and easy to use, while PHP uses traditional databases like MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Etc.
