How Reddit Turned User Content Into About $60M a Year (And What It Means for Data Owners)

In February 2024, Reuters reported that Reddit had signed a deal worth about $60M a year to license its content to Google for AI training.

That is a platform earning real money from something it already had: years of posts. Here is what made it work, and what it means if you own data too.

1. Reddit controlled the rights

Reddit's terms of service let it license the content users post. Without that, there is no deal. AI labs want to know the data was obtained legally and can be used for training. Clear rights come first.

2. The data was hard to get anywhere else

Nearly two decades of real people asking questions, answering them and arguing about almost every topic. That kind of natural conversation is exactly what language models learn from, and it can't be recreated.

3. Access was ongoing

The deal covers access to new content as it is posted, not just a one-time copy of the archive. Ongoing access keeps a model current, which turns a one-off sale into recurring revenue.

4. The timing was right

Labs were competing for quality training data, and Reddit had a large, licensable supply.

You don't need to be Reddit

Labs are not only buying giant datasets. They also look for:

Niche expert communities

Non-English text

Industry-specific records

Structured business data

What matters most is that the data is unique and that you hold the rights.

How we score data

Factor

Question

Rights

Do you own it and can you license it?

Uniqueness

Can labs get it anywhere else?

Scale

How much is there?

Structure

Is it labeled and organized?

Freshness

Is new data still coming in?

Reddit scores well on all five. That's why the deal happened.

Another public example

News Corp signed a deal with OpenAI reported at about $250M over 5 years (Source: WSJ, May 2024), covering titles like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. Authoritative content with clean rights gets paid.
