The card application wanted a history I did not have yet

The first card I applied for asked for an SSN or an ITIN, and I was proud to have the second one. I typed the nine digits that start with 9 and waited. The answer was polite and quick: not enough credit history. I had a taxpayer number. I did not have a file.

Those are two different things, and I had treated them as one. The ITIN lets the IRS match a return to a person without a Social Security number. It is not work authorization, and it is not a credit score. A score needs a file, and a file needs accounts that report.

 The order I skipped

ITIN Club writes the order down plainly, and I did not invent it: get the ITIN, open a US bank account that will take it, start a credit file, let a score exist, and only then look at the cards with the travel points. I had jumped from step one to step five. The club is free. I am not quoting a price because I did not pay one.

The number itself came from a W-7, filed with the tax return that needed it. A passport is the only document that proves both identity and foreign status by itself, and a Certifying Acceptance Agent, a VITA site, or a Taxpayer Assistance Center can review it so the original stays home. The wait was about seven weeks. How to get an ITIN as a foreigner is the page I reread when I wanted to remember which part of the errand I was on.

The bank came first, for a reason

A bank account that accepts an ITIN is where a lot of the first credit products live. How to open a US bank account as a non-resident was the tab I kept open. It also covers the other desk, the one for a US LLC. A business account wants the company's Articles of Organization, its EIN letter (a CP 575 or a 147C), and a passport for every owner with 25% or more. It wants a real street address. A registered agent, a P.O. box, or a UPS Store does not count. The account belongs to the company, and the EIN is the company's number, not mine.

 A small card that reports

The first card that said yes was not the one with the lounge. It was a small one, picked because it reports to the bureaus and because the issuer takes an ITIN. How to get a US credit card as a non-resident is the guide that explains why those two details matter more than the welcome bonus in the first year.

I used it for one bill and paid it in full every month. That is the whole strategy. It is boring on purpose.

When there is something to check

A few months later there was finally a file to look at. How to check your credit score is the page for that moment, not for the day the ITIN letter arrives. There is nothing to check on day one.

I also put one more line in my calendar. An ITIN that is not used on a federal tax return for three tax years in a row expires. A file I spent a year building would not vanish, but every form that asks for the number again would turn into a question.

None of this is financial or tax advice. It is the order I wish I had followed before the first polite no:

ITIN Club

How to get an ITIN as a foreigner

How to open a US bank account as a non-resident

How to get a US credit card as a non-resident

How to check your credit score
