What an availability alert actually means

The domain aftermarket (Afternic, Sedo, GoDaddy Auctions listings) is where owners sell names that are already registered. You pay a negotiated or buy-it-now price and transfer. A domain watchlist is the opposite lane: the name is taken, not listed (or listed at a price you refuse), and you wait for lapse or release — then register at normal registrar pricing when RDAP looks available.

Mixing the two is how people overspend. Below is a clean split: buy listed, watch unlisted keepers, backorder contested deletes. Vacato is the watch/alert layer only — not a marketplace and not a drop-catcher.

Aftermarket = buy a listed name today

If brand.com is on Afternic or Sedo at a price you will pay, buy it. Watching does not unlock a listed name — the owner can renew forever. Marketplaces exist so capital clears inventory without waiting for expiry.

Most people who "watch domains" are actually doing one of three different jobs — and using the wrong tool for two of them.

The three jobs

One-off lookup — "Is this name registered right now?" Wrong tool: paying for a watchlist, or opening twenty WHOIS sites.
Coverage over time — "Ping me if one of these taken names looks available." Wrong tool: manual WHOIS every few days; backordering 80 maybes.
Must-win at delete — "I will pay auction / race money for this name." Wrong tool: a spreadsheet reminder; a flat-fee alert-only tool.

Mixing them up is how founders end up with hyphenated .ios, and how investors burn cash on backorders they didn't need.

Lane 1 — Lookups (and why WHOIS "spam" feels broken)
