Anthropic’s New ‘Computer Use’ Feature for Claude AI Now Available for Developers: Boost Your Automation Capabilities

Anthropic has unveiled a cutting-edge feature in its latest Claude 3.5 Sonnet AI model, currently in public beta, that enables the AI to interact with a computer much like a human. This "computer use" feature allows Claude to move a cursor, click buttons, and type text simply by "looking" at the screen. Now available via the API, developers can use this capability to automate tasks on computers, as demonstrated on a Mac in the video below.

While competitors like Microsoft’s Copilot Vision, OpenAI’s desktop app for ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini app on Android phones offer AI tools that can interpret your computer’s screen, none have yet released full-scale tools capable of performing tasks directly for users like this. Rabbit promised similar capabilities with its R1 model, though it has yet to deliver.

That said, Anthropic emphasizes that the "computer use" feature remains experimental and may be "cumbersome and error-prone." The company is releasing it early for developer feedback, with expectations for rapid refinement.

According to Anthropic:

There are many actions that people routinely do with computers (dragging, zooming, and so on) that Claude can’t yet attempt. The 'flipbook' nature of Claude’s view of the screen—taking screenshots and piecing them together, rather than observing a more granular video stream—means that it can miss short-lived actions or notifications.

Additionally, Claude has been programmed to avoid social media engagement, with “measures to monitor when Claude is asked to engage in election-related activity, as well as systems for nudging Claude away from activities like generating and posting content on social media, registering web domains, or interacting with government websites.”

Beyond this, the Claude 3.5 Sonnet model brings significant performance improvements, offered to customers at the same price and speed as its predecessor:

The updated Claude 3.5 Sonnet shows wide-ranging improvements on industry benchmarks, with particularly strong gains in agentic coding and tool use tasks. On coding, it improves performance on SWE-bench Verified from 33.4% to 49.0%, scoring higher than all publicly available models—including reasoning models like OpenAI o1-preview and specialized systems designed for agentic coding. It also improves performance on TAU-bench, an agentic tool use task, from 62.6% to 69.2% in the retail domain, and from 36.0% to 46.0% in the more challenging airline domain.

We’ve all experienced the frustration of a slow-loading web page. Sometimes the issue lies with your internet connection, but other times, the problem might be the website itself. If the website in question is your own, this can be particularly worrying. You might fear that visitors are encountering the same slow speeds or, worse, that they can’t access your site at all.

To alleviate these concerns, you can bookmark a few URLs that will help you conduct a speed test of your site. These tools will provide valuable information to help you diagnose your website's response time.

For a comprehensive speed test site, try WebSitePulse. This tool allows you to test your website's response time from three different regions: the US, Europe, and Australia. Since your website server is likely hosted in one of these regions, the response time from that specific region will typically be faster.

If you want to dive deeper into the specifics of your site’s load time, including how long each component takes to load (such as the web page, images, and style sheets), Pingdom is the tool for you. This Website Speed Test tool provides detailed insights and visuals.

Comparing Website Speeds

Is your site slow or fast? To find out, compare it to other sites using the same tool. It’s important to note that the location of the site’s hosting server can significantly impact its speed. For accurate comparisons, use the WebSitePulse tool and select the region that corresponds with your website's server location.

For example, Google’s US search page loads in 0.085 seconds on WebSitePulse. If your site can match or beat this, you’re in great shape. For reference, travislord.xyz loads in 0.076 seconds, and Amazon’s home page loads in 0.4 seconds from the US, which is considered excellent for an ecommerce website.

What I Built

I enjoyed this challenge and had a lot of fun.
Picking a theme proved to be the most challenging part of the process. I will explain the journey after the demo.

Journey

Alright, for this project, I wasn't quite certain what theme to go for. I began by creating a basic layout with some temporary images. Once the layout was looking good, I began considering the theme. However, I found myself struggling to decide between creating my unique theme or incorporating an existing one that others could relate to or feel nostalgic about.

After I replaced the temporary images, I found that I didn't enjoy the layout as much. I felt that I was overthinking the design and functionality. At that point, I realized, I needed to take a break and focus on other tasks. So, I decided to put the challenge on hold for two days until I worked out two themes to go off.

When I came back I realized the first theme was the issue, not the layout and functionality. I picked the theme you see now and got started. I removed the option to change the background at the same time as the activity images as it felt too much. I then needed to work out if the characters should be placed on the background or if I should control them, I picked the second option due to time and made the cloud images you see above the h1.

I wanted to continue refining the project but reminded myself of the goal to participate in a DEV community challenge and have fun. The goal was achieved!
