A website can return HTTP 200, include canonical tags, and publish a valid sitemap while still giving readers confusing information.

An October 12 audit of TOOLBBS, a Chinese-language directory for cross-border ecommerce and business tools, highlighted this distinction.

Disclosure: I maintain TOOLBBS. This article discusses findings from its public-page audit. It does not claim that any individual issue explains Google's indexing decisions.

 The scope matters

The sitemap listed 617 URLs. The audit successfully verified 110 sitemap URLs, including 102 tool pages, and performed additional tests on pagination, search, login, URL variants, and nonexistent addresses.

The remaining bulk requests encountered a network-proxy restriction before receiving a website response. Those requests were recorded as unverified, rather than classified as website errors.

This is an important detail in any audit: a failed request from your testing environment is not automatically a failed response from the origin server.

 1. Summary cards need semantic validation

Tool pages included cards labelled:

Suitable for

Not suitable for

Cost considerations

Compliance considerations

The labels were useful, but some displayed text did not answer the corresponding question.

One Etsy page showed “care instructions” as its compliance summary. Across 101 sampled pages containing these cards, 22 used identical text for the cost and compliance cards.

That suggests a problem worth investigating in the summary-selection process. The audit did not inspect the PHP implementation, so it could not establish the exact code-level cause.

A safer design is to store each summary explicitly:

{
 "audience_summary": null,
 "cost_summary": null,
 "compliance_summary": null
}

A missing value should remain missing until an editor supplies an appropriate summary. Reusing the opening paragraph may produce a populated card, but it can also produce misleading information.

Useful acceptance checks include:

Does the audience card describe an audience?

Does the cost card explain costs or pricing conditions?

Does the compliance card describe a relevant restriction?

Are two different cards repeating the same generic paragraph?

Checking that a field is nonempty is only the first step.

 2. Navigation links do not replace contextual links

All 102 sampled tool-page bodies lacked links to other pages on the same website.

The pages still had navigation, breadcrumbs, and recommendation modules. The finding concerned links inside the main article body.

These serve different purposes.

A navigation menu helps readers move between broad sections. A contextual link helps them continue a specific task: understanding a fee, configuring a service, or comparing alternatives.

For a directory, useful relationships might be:

Tool overview → setup tutorial

Setup tutorial → troubleshooting guide

Comparison article → individual tool pages

Add these relationships where they help the reader. There is no need to insert a fixed number of links into every article.

 3. Recommendations should match their labels

The homepage had separate paths for ecommerce, foreign trade, and AI users.

However, the AI path recommended articles about shipping documentation and freight surcharges. Those articles could be useful elsewhere, but they did not match the purpose of that particular module.

A recommendation system needs a content rule as well as a display template.

For example, an AI learning path could use:

Explicit editorial selections.

Articles assigned to the relevant topic.

A shorter list when suitable content is unavailable.

Filling every slot with unrelated recent posts makes the component look complete while weakening its usefulness.

 What this means for indexing

These findings do not demonstrate an indexing penalty.

They show that technical accessibility and editorial usefulness need separate checks.

Google's helpful-content guidance discusses original value, clear sourcing, accuracy, and the reader's experience. Its pagination guidance explains how crawlers discover content through links.

An audit should examine both layers, then use Search Console and server logs to investigate actual indexing outcomes.

For a tool directory, a practical review question is: can a reader understand the summary, verify important claims, and find the next relevant step?

This draft was prepared with AI assistance, using findings from the October 12 public-page audit.
