Here is the honest answer — what an engagement shoot actually is, what you get out of it, and how to decide.

What an engagement shoot actually is

A 60-90 minute photo session with your wedding photographer, 2-6 months before the wedding, at a location of your choice. You get 30-80 edited images. Most couples use them for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and guest-book prints. The cost is typically £250-450 if it's not bundled with the wedding package.

What you get out of it — the photos

30-80 edited images of you and your partner, in a location you like, in clothes you chose. These are useful for: (1) save-the-date cards, (2) the wedding website, (3) a guest-book print at the reception, (4) social media announcements, (5) Christmas cards. If you use them for one of these, the shoot is worth the cost.

The bigger benefit is the practice. Most couples have never been professionally photographed. Done badly, it eats 30-45 minutes of the canapé window. Here is the printable list — eight combinations, in the right order, with timing notes — that we use on every wedding.

The 8-combo list (printable)

(1) Bride + Mum + Dad, (2) Groom + Mum + Dad, (3) Bride + each sibling, (4) Groom + each sibling, (5) Bride + Groom + grandparents, (6) Bride + Groom + both sets of parents, (7) Bride + Groom + immediate family, (8) Bride + Groom + the whole wedding. Numbers 1-7 are 4-6 people; number 8 is everyone. The first 7 take 8-10 minutes. Number 8 takes another 2-3.

The order — why it works

The logic is the same as a Russian-doll: smallest groups first, biggest last. The people in combination 1 are NOT in combinations 2-7 (they leave). The people in combination 7 are in combination 8 (they stay). This way, by the time you get to the whole-wedding shot, the people who are still there are exactly the people who should be there. Nobody is waiting around.

How to print it

One A4 sheet. First names only (no surnames, no 'Auntie' — 'Auntie Susan' confuses your photographer). Both partners' lists on the same page, with the 8 combinations numbered. Hand it to the photographer at the rehearsal, or in the morning if there isn't one. They will love you for it.

The one you skip

Number 9. There is no number 9. If you're running late, the 9th combination is the one you cut. We have never been to a wedding where the missing 9th combination caused a problem; we have been to many where the missing 10th combination caused a problem (because we never got to the canapés).

What to do with the children

Two options: (1) include them in combinations 7 and 8, or (2) do a separate 'children of the couple' shot. Option 1 is faster; option 2 gives the parents a print of just the kids. Most couples pick option 1 unless they have 5+ nieces/nephews.

The 60-second rule

If a combination is taking longer than 60 seconds to set up, skip it and come back. The photographer should be running the show, but the couple should be making the call on 'this is the most important photo of the day' vs. 'this is the one we can skip.' Have that conversation in advance.

What raw files actually are

A raw file is the unprocessed image data from the camera's sensor. It is not a finished photograph. It is the equivalent of a film negative: the data is there, but it has not been 'developed.' To become a photograph, it needs editing (exposure, colour, contrast, crop, etc.). Editing a raw file takes 5-15 minutes per image. A 600-image delivery is 50-150 hours of editing.

Why most photographers don't give raw files

Three reasons. (1) The editing is the work. Without the editing, the photographer has done 30% of the job, not 100%. (2) The raw files are not 'finished' — they look flat, desaturated, and uncropped. The order — smallest groups first

Always. Bride + parents. Groom + parents. Bride + each sibling. Groom + each sibling. Bride + groom + grandparents. Bride + groom + both sets of parents. Bride + groom + immediate family. The logic: as the group gets bigger, the people who are 'in' the photo shrink. People who are only in the first three combinations can leave after 4 minutes.

The location — within earshot of the drinks reception

Two minutes is the maximum. Any further and people stop paying attention, the photographer stops getting eye contact, and the list takes 30 minutes. Within earshot of the canapés and a drinks station. That is the whole thing.

Two reasons: (1) the formal photos should be the first thing after the ceremony, before the drinks reception loosens everyone up, (2) the photographer needs 10 minutes of everyone else's attention and that is easiest to get before the canapés start. The canapé window is 60-90 minutes; the formal photos are the first 10 of those.

The fallback — the one combo you skip if you're running late

The one combo you skip is the one with the most distant relatives. There is always one. The bride-and-groom-with-extended-family photo is the one that gets cut when the timing slips, and the world does not end. Be honest with your partner about which one that is in advance.

What your photographer should be doing
