The Issue of Illegal Domestic Workers and the Need for Protection

As a PhD student in sociology, I was recently tasked to write my discussion post on the increasing prevalence of illegal domestic workers, and the statistics I uncovered only reinforced the need for urgent action to protect these vulnerable workers.

In fact, as I was writing a book report on the exploitation of migrant domestic workers, it became increasingly clear to me that this issue is not receiving the attention and action it deserves. In recent years, the number of domestic workers engaged in labor has risen to over 2 million, according to the United States Census Bureau. This number, however, does not accurately capture the full extent of the issue, as many illegal domestic workers are not documented or cleared. This increase in domestic labor has become a significant concern in Western and other wealthier nations, where women are increasingly pursuing careers, leaving a need for more care for the elderly and disabled. Despite the importance of the domestic workforce, migrant domestic workers remain among the most exploited and misused individuals globally.

Domestic workers account for up to 10% of total employment in certain nations and are predominantly women. Domestic work has become a popular occupation for women, largely due to economic factors and the fact that it is challenging to find men interested in such work. In fact, domestic and other care work form the largest single occupation for women globally.

Despite the essential role that domestic workers play, they often do not enjoy the benefits and protections granted to workers in other sectors. Domestic work has been labeled as care work, which has resulted in it being removed from economic entitlements. As a result, domestic workers do not benefit from minimum wage and day off entitlements, fixed working hours, vacations, or other benefits. Moreover, the government's inability to ensure protection for domestic workers and other informal sector workers is a significant legal and policy failure, perpetuated by societal perceptions that domestic work is not considered "real" work.

The issue of illegal domestic workers is particularly concerning, as they are often exploited and abused. Many countries of origin of these workers, despite receiving significant income from their remittances, have failed to protect them. The international community and the United States have also failed to develop comprehensive laws and policies to curb this crisis. Undocumented migrant workers have been left in dire straits, without any protections or support.

In conclusion, the issue of illegal domestic workers is a significant concern that demands urgent attention. Governments must take immediate action to ensure that domestic workers are protected and that their rights are upheld. Laws and policies must be developed to address this issue comprehensively, and the international community must work together to find sustainable solutions. Only then can we begin to tackle the exploitation and mistreatment of these vulnerable workers and provide them with the protections and support they deserve.

Critical Analysis About the Emperor of Portugalia

Preface

As a student, I was to write a book report for me and my class about the novel Emperor of Portugalia, written by Selma Lagerlof in her native Swedish language. The novel is a unique blend of historical fiction and fantasy elements. Lagerlof’s vivid descriptions of the characters and settings paired with her lyrical prose create an immersive world that readers can truly get lost in. She expertly weaves together a captivating story with a moral message, as the brothers learn to set aside petty differences and unite against a common enemy. So just read it!

The book is called The Emperor of Portugallia and it was originally written by Selma Lagerlof in her native Swedish language. It was later translated into English. The book is based on the traditional country life of the Swedish people and the author was able to clearly capture this time in the history of Sweden. The story presented in the book is about a country man Jan together with his daughter Glory Goldie Sunnycastle whom he adores so much. They are shown to be very good and close friends from the daughter’s early childhood and up to the time she moves into the world and her father does not hear about her ever again. This causes Jan to start living in a world of fantasy where he imagines his daughter as the Queen of Portugallia, making him to become the Emporor of Portugallia. It is an interesting book as it moves between a fantastic beginning and tragic end but with a feeling of love flowing all through the text.

The author has been able to establish the characters well. In the beginning of the text we see Jan as a worried man who seems to be waiting for something that will change his future. Indeed, his life changes as we see him being a father of the beautiful girl Glory Goldie Sunnycastle whom he even goes ahead to name after the sun. With this the author introduces the second main character. This is impressive of the author as the reader is introduced to the main characters at the beginning and, thus, sets a good stage for identifying with the characters. As the text progresses, both main characters are given a personality from the events that follow. Glory Goldie Sunnycastle is shown to be highly intelligent as she grows and her father is described as an anxious person. This is another admirable element in the plot of the book. The author also shows us how the life of Jan slowly starts changing once Glory Goldie Sunnycastle leaves home in search of a job. This is how the happy beginning is turned into tragic, but without losing the element of the love the father had for his daughter.

The book The Emperor of Portugallia is a fictional story and the author presents the story in a chronological order without leaving the reader suspended. Using conversations between the characters, the author is able to capture the mind of the reader into believing the characters and whatever tribulations they are going through. In the story of the Empress, in order to bring out the fantasy world that Jan goes into after not hearing from his daughter for a long time, she uses the words of Aggripa to evoke the emotions that Jan had kept to himself for a long time and through his words the characters of the Emperor and Empress are born into the story. This is an impressive use of words to bring out imagery and paint the pictures of the event in the readers mind. The writer is also able to bring out symbolism in her work. An example is where the sun becomes the girl’s godmother, and later in life she is a true beauty and also so precious to her father.

The book is interesting to read despite the sadness in it. The characters are well described, as well as the events that happen in the lives of these characters. The environment that the characters live in is also well described and the author is seen to have empowered her female characters more than the males. This may be because of gender but she is able to bring out the theme of how blind love can make people to be.

Ethical Dilemmas in Current Law Enforcement Cases Black Community Rebels in Cincinnati Racial deprivation is one of the most controversial issues of contemporary democratic tendencies. In fact, the evidence of racial contradiction still exists. The events in Cincinnati actually show quite dubious case: ethical basics and law do not coincide. Thomas Timothy was evidently guilty of some traffic rule violation and was attempting to escape. The policeman was chasing him, but some unfinished actions of Thomas provoked the policeman to open fire. It should be noted that in this case a stereotype worked that all black people are willing to commit a crime. As a result, the policeman thought that Thomas has been going to shoot him back. It is quite possible that if Thomas was a white man, the policeman would have not thought about a possibility to be attacked.
The outcome of the case was quite typical. The black community of Cincinnati strongly resented racist behaviour towards representative of their community. In fact, violence provokes violence. Protest turned into a cruel riot and peaceful citizens suffered. Actually, Afro-Americans were taking a revenge, which could be somehow explained ethically, but totally unacceptable by the law. All in all, any police officer should have a careful thought before shooting any running criminal without any respect to his or her colour of skin. As it was said before, chaotic violence is a source for chaotic revenge.
Excessive Force Case at High Court It is hard to argue that in most controversial situations a human matter plays a crucial role. Saucier and Parker acted according to their duty, but in this case it was totally unnecessary. First of all, Katz was suspected on the basis of invalid information. Further, an action of Katz was considered as a dangerous one due to Suicer and Parker’s personal convictions. It is also quite obvious that presence of an important person influenced such proactive behaviour. Being strongly convinced that Katz is guilty, militarists were waiting for a reason to attack. It is explained by a simple military psychology: to react at the first threatening movement of the enemy. In contrast, Katz was not anyhow apologized and was objected to claim about an excessive violence from the side of military forces. Needless to say that such a behaviour has to be apologized both legally and ethically.
It is also obvious that military forces in this area are no longer respected. Moreover, it is possible to suspect them in being bribed by certain politicians because they acted with special precision. Finally, it is to be said that any establishment which has a right to use force against people is supposed to be responsible for its wrong actions.
Seattle Settles Excessive-Force Case Making a physical harm to women is quite strong controversy, especially at days of accepted emancipation. Trends are changing, but women remain to be vulnerable and physically less strong than men, especially police officers. The Seattle case actually presents a typical contradiction between ethical principles and the law. Brittany Beaulieu was definitely drunk and not responsible for her adequate behaviour. Moreover, she was trying to prevent a policeman from doing his primary duty. Hence, there were all grounds for Brittany’s arrest.
Nevertheless, the way Brittany was arrested is totally wrong. First of all, the policemen dealt with an intoxicated woman who is fragile and much weaker than him. Such aggressive behaviour of a woman did not mean a violent response from the side of police officer, who is first of all the male responsible for anyone weaker than him nearby. Taking into consideration a legal aspect, it is to be said that the policeman should react with a relevant force. Brittany evidently was not a dangerous person in this situation, so the police officer should have just subdued her without any excessive force. To sum up, it is necessary to draw a conclusion that police have to use force relevantly to the level of danger, which a criminal represents to peaceful citizens.

Application of Foucault’s Theories to the FEMEN Protests

Nowadays, feminist movement can be often represented by the nude protest actions. A vivid example is FEMEN protests. However, many people do not accept these activists because they believe that such actions are senseless and shameful. Despite being perceived as shameless activities, the protests of FEMEN are meaningful, goal-oriented actions that are based on the Foucault’s concepts of power, knowledge, and liberation.
First, protest activities of the movement embody the notion of knowledge with an aim to generate the power of the masses for the continuous pursuit of liberation. Discourses are formed as the language in action, as they influence and regulate people’s thoughts and actions. Particular knowledge is reproduced through the discourse and the knowledge is known as a form of power. The discourses FEMEN have about women in general and female body particularly are derived from the specific knowledge production that attributes a true value to them. Therefore, it is possible to say that FEMEN represent a naked body as the symbol of freedom that produces the knowledge which states that women are not objects but independent society’s members. Within the scope of such knowledge, the protests obtain the power among the masses that helps to reach the liberation goal. Thus, through the knowledge, FEMEN’s nude protests generate power relations, to which people are submitted and made to realize women’s role in the society.
Apart from that, these protests reveal the implications of the power theory that explains the use of the body as the strategic and resistance tool in the struggle for liberation. Based on the Foucault’s theories, the body is seen as something that is regulated through the rules, prescribed by the society within the dominant discourses. The power relations can be applied to the female body and the power, in this case, works through individuals by positioning their bodies in compliance with social rules, but not through the physical coercion. Hence, the body is seen as the power and struggle site’s instrument. Moreover, it can be perceived as the struggle site in one context and as the resistance political tool in another. Foucault states that where there is power there is resistance. FEMEN are trying to convey that all female’s body functions are strictly regulated and controlled by the patriarchy. As a consequence, the body separated from a woman is only an object to the patriarchal exploitation. FEMEN resist the idea that the female bodies can be seen only as the objects that live for men’s gaze. In the protests, it is clearly stated that the female nudity, free of the patriarchal power, is a symbol of women’s liberation and freedom. Hence, the body can be considered as a key in the women’s liberation struggle and as a political tool of resistance.
Overall, I strongly believe that FEMEN actions are not shameless, chaotic, senseless or useless because such protests are carefully planned and their purpose is highly appropriate. Moreover, such actions have to be considered as goal-orientated and meaningful since they convey the message about the women’s liberation in the society. It is critical to understand that their bodies are used strategically to turn the society’s attention to the serious problem of gender inequality and an acute need for independence around the world. The Foucault’s theories can help to understand the protests’ background and purposes and realize a hidden message sent to the society, so that people could stop judging FEMEN protests. Therefore, FEMEN nude protests can be understood through the Foucault’s knowledge notions, power and liberation, where the bodies are used as the strategic tool in the fight for women’s independence and freedom globally.
