By lynsea Ye

Not every Tesla wrap involves vinyl and a heat gun. Since Tesla launched Paint Shop, owners can change their car's on-screen appearance with a simple PNG file — a "digital wrap." Here's how it actually works.

 What is a digital wrap?

Your Tesla's touchscreen shows a 3D model of your car. Paint Shop lets you replace its appearance by uploading a PNG wrapped onto the car's 3D model using a UV template — a 2D "unwrapped" map of the car's surface. Design on the flat template, and it maps correctly onto the 3D visualization.

It doesn't change your physical car at all — it's purely the on-screen visualization. But it's free, instant, and a great way to test-drive a design before paying for real vinyl.

 The technical requirements

Tesla is picky about the file:

Format: PNG

Resolution: 512×512 to 1024×1024 pixels

File size: under 1MB (auto-compressed)

Template: must match your exact model — a Model 3 template won't map correctly onto a Cybertruck

Get any of these wrong and the upload silently fails or looks distorted. The most common mistake is using the wrong model's template.

How to load it in your car

Design or download a Paint Shop PNG for your model.

In the Tesla app (v4.59.0+): Creations → Wrap → Upload, or

Via USB: place the PNG in a folder named
Wraps
on an exFAT/FAT32 USB drive, then open Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps on the touchscreen.

 Where to get designs

Tesla publishes official UV templates for supported models on GitHub (teslamotors/custom-wraps), but they're blank — you still have to design something.

I built Tesla Wrap Gallery to close that gap: browse a searchable gallery of model-specific wrap designs for Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck, preview any design in the 2D/3D browser studio, and export a model-matched Paint Shop PNG with a built-in export checker that validates the file before you transfer it. Free to browse, no account required.

 Digital vs. vinyl: which first?

Do the digital version first, always. It costs nothing and answers the only question that matters — "will I actually like this on my car?" — before you spend $3,500+ on vinyl. Plenty of owners (myself included) cycled through a dozen digital designs before committing to one for the real wrap.
