The average price of a new car in America hit $49,855 in July 2026, according to Kelley Blue Book. That's the highest level so far this year. But the headline number doesn't tell the full story, and if you're shopping for a car right now, you need to understand what's really happening.

The $50,000 Floor Is Real

New-vehicle prices have been hovering just below $50,000 all year. June saw $49,758. April was $49,461. It's been remarkably steady -- until July, when prices ticked up 1.9% year-over-year to $49,855.

But here's the thing: the mix of what people are actually buying has shifted. More buyers are gravitating toward compact cars, subcompact SUVs, and midsize sedans. These segments all saw year-over-year sales gains in July, while demand for full-size pickups, full-size SUVs, and luxury segments softened.

Translation: people are buying cheaper cars, but the average price still went up anyway. That means the underlying prices of those "cheaper" cars are rising too.

The Used Market Is a Different Beast

While new car prices creep up slowly, used car prices have been on a rollercoaster. CARFAX reported used car prices jumped between $1,350 and $3,600 in the first six months of 2026.

The wildcard? Hybrids and EVs. Used hybrid and electric vehicle prices are up 11.9% -- or about $3,600 -- since January. The average used EV now costs $34,117. Conflict in the Middle East has pushed gas prices higher, which pushed demand toward fuel-efficient options.

But there's good news: the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index actually dropped 1.4% in July, the first decline in three months. The used market might be cooling off.

According to Experian data, the average monthly car payment in Q2 2026 was $765 for a new car and $542 for used. And 18.31% of new car loans now have payments over $1,000 per month.

With the average new car loan at $43,610, and interest rates still elevated, the monthly nut is the real number buyers feel.

Where the Deals Are

Incentive spending hit 7% of average transaction price in June -- meaning about $3,480 off MSRP. It dropped to 6.4% in July, which is the lowest since January. If you're looking for deals, full-size pickups (8.6% incentived), compact SUVs (7.8%), and midsize SUVs (6.8%) are where discounts live.

The best advice for buyers right now: shop the segments where incentived spending is highest, consider nearly-new used (especially non-EV models where prices are actually declining), and don't assume waiting will save you money. With 2027 models arriving on dealer lots with higher sticker prices, the upward pressure isn't going away.
