Ferrum: A Systems Coding Agent Built for Developers Who Want to Understand the Code

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

 What I Built

I built Ferrum, an open-source coding agent designed for systems programming.

I built it for the kind of developer who doesn't just want an AI to dump a solution into their editor, but wants an agent that can actually work with the project, understand its context, make changes, and verify what it did.
Ferrum is focused on the lower-level side of development: C, C++, Rust, Assembly, system tooling, and projects where understanding what is happening under the hood actually matters.

The goal is to make an agent that can work with the codebase instead of just talking about it.

 Demo

You can try Ferrum here:
https://ferrum-hpw4.onrender.com

 Code

The entire project is open source:
https://github.com/Manit098/Ferrum

 How I Built It

Ferrum is built as an AI agent harness around an open-weight model.
Instead of treating the model as a simple chatbot, Ferrum gives it a structured environment where it can work with a real software project.

The core idea is:

Understand → Plan → Act → Verify

Ferrum can inspect the project, reason about the task, work with the code, and verify the result instead of stopping after generating an answer.
I intentionally kept the first version focused. I wanted something that actually works as a useful tool rather than building a huge architecture that only looks impressive on paper.

The project is also designed to be extended by the open-source community, with contribution guidelines and a code of conduct included in the repository.

 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

AI coding tools are becoming extremely powerful, but a lot of the experience is still built around closed models and closed infrastructure.
Open-weight models make it possible to build something different.

With Ferrum, I can experiment with how an agent interacts with a codebase without having the entire system depend on a single closed API.
It also means other developers can inspect the project, modify it, contribute to it, run their own experiments, and build on top of the work.

You don't just use the technology. You get to understand it, change it, and build something new with it.

 Prize Categories

I am not submitting Ferrum for any partner prize categories.

I’ve been building Waycode around one idea: learn by doing, not collecting certificates.

Now we’re taking that idea into Founding 100, a build-first challenge for students.
No pitch decks. Just build, document, and show your work.
