I gathered hundreds of developer jobs

Hey everyone.

I just launched Dev Employ, a site to help developers find jobs. Some are great opportunities.

Most jobs are remote, and you can also find a description of the position, the offered salary (when available) and a couple more things, alongside the link for the application process.

You can also filter the jobs based on their attributes (like the tech used), so it's easier for you to find exactly what you're looking for.

I hope you find a great job there!

I built a collaborative list of resources for developers

Hi everyone! 👋

I'm so excited to share with you what I've been creating, but let me start by explaining how Dev Resources came to be.

DR started as my personal compilation of resources for development. After a few years of (messy) bookmarking, I decided it was time to put everything in one place, categorized and most importantly, available for everyone.

Since its release (October 2020), many devs have contacted me to add their own creations and favourites, increasing, even more, the number of resources.
With that said, you can already guess: DR has all the things I like and find important for software development, but it can also have what you want.

Here's a brief of what you can find there:

🛠 tools
🧩 assets
🧪 learning
👨‍💻 jobs
💰 product offers
➕ and a lot more

But you know what makes it even better?

The resources list is now open source, so everyone can contribute and be a part of it! 🤝

I hope that together we can create the biggest repository of resources for developers, so we can easily find what we need, share our creations and stay updated with new releases.

I'm planning a few more things for the next months:

📬 newsletter with trending resources, deals and updates (already on the making)
⬆️ upvoting to help amazing projects stand out
🔖 bookmarking for a more personalised experience
☎️ communication between devs and makers
🔥 and whatever else you guys find useful, after all, Dev Resources is made from us to us

I launched it on Product Hunt today, and I'd love your feedback on it. It's my first time launching something there, and I've postponed it many times, always trying to get some more things done, but I think the current state is already good enough for a launch.

Anyway, I'd love to hear what you think of it!

Dev Resources: https://devresourc.es
Resouces list and public API: https://github.com/marcelscruz/dev-resources
Product Hunt: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/dev-resources

That's it, have a nice day and enjoy Dev Resources! 🤘

I Gathered 700+ Development Resources In One Place

Over the last years I've collected and bookmarked countless resources that were useful in my journey as a developer.

It not only became hard to keep it organised, but I also felt it could be useful for many other devs that, just like me, love finding out new projects, experimenting new tools and improving their workflows.

Working as a web developer has never been easier. And harder.

What?

Yes, with so many tools and automation, tedious and complex tasks we used to do ourselves became painless, smarter and faster. But with so many options to choose, it's also becoming hard to keep track of new trends and quality software.

Shameless plug: that's why I created Dev Resources. It's my personal compilation of resources I've been using and bookmarking in the last years, and you can also submit your favourites.

Without further ado, let me show you some resources to step up your web developer game.

 freeCodeCamp

Everything starts with learning, and when it comes to it there's no better option than freeCodeCamp.

Their curriculum is constantly updated and reviewed, and for being an open-source project, it's guaranteed to have the best learning experience for developers.

 HTMLrev

Useful resource for free HTML templates. HTMLrev showcases selected items from generous template creators from all around the world. HTML vanilla CSS, Bootstrap, Tailwind, React, Next, Astro and more.

What sets this website apart from the sea of template galleries is that it checks each item to be free for both personal and commercial (client work) projects. Saves time, money and headaches.

 Fonts In Use

Finding fonts isn't so complicated anymore. Services like Google Fonts give you thousands of options to choose from.

But what about seeing the font being used in a context? That's what Fonts In Use will do. It lets you see how professionals use certain fonts in certain cases, giving you a better idea of which font fits better your project.

 Icônes

No more searching different places for your icons. Why? Because Icônes put them all in one place!

Browse their huge list of icon sets and export them in SVG, React or Vue components. Can it get any easier?

 ColorSpace

Generating a colour palette is a crucial, yet not simple task for a developer without a design background. Your site should look good while conveying the message you're passing. Also, accessibility plays a huge role in the quality of your project.

ColorSpace will look after all of this: all you need to do is give it one colour, and it'll do the rest for you, generating several different palettes that will fit any use case.

 Syntax

Listen to two seasoned developers sharing their experiences and opinions on most web development topics. Great to keep updated with new trends and tools.

 Vercel

Hosting your website has never been easier. Vercel lets you deploy your web app or website with one command through the terminal, or even hooking your GitHub repository and deploying automatically with every
git push
.

They recently added analytics to their service, so you can also check how your project is performing.

 Linktopus

Need a personal page to showcase your latest projects and GitHub contributions graph?

Linktopus is a modern and easy-to-use link in bio tool, where you can easily create your personal and professional page, add text, images, products, your GitHub activity and a lot more.

 The Coding Interview

So you looked for a job, and now you need to face the dreaded interview. Well, it doesn't need to be scary if you're prepared for it, right?

The Coding Interview will help you prepare for that.

 Dev Resources

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Dev Resources is a compilation of all resources you might need while working as a developer.

You can find all the resources above and a lot more. And that's not all: you can submit your favourites, in case they're not there yet, and you can find great deals for premium products.

And there's more coming soon:

upvoting, so you can rank resources

bookmarking, so you can easily find your favourites

community, so you can share your experiences and connect with creators

and if you have more ideas, I'd love to hear it, after all, Dev Resources is made from dev to dev.

I hope you enjoy this list and that it helps you with your developer journey.

And if you want to connect with me, you can reach me on Twitter as @marcelcruz.

Happy coding!

How I Explained Commit and Pull Request

It was somewhere in November last year, I had a friend with little Git experience sitting beside me, and as the day was passing by he was accumulating files with changes and not being able to make a decision of when and how to commit them, and later on, to PR.

It felt hard to give him any advice not knowing what he was working on (we were working on different projects), so I used a non-IT example. Now I want to share it with you.

Note: if you want to understand the command-wise "how", well, that's not quite the post for you. But if you want to understand what should belong to the same commit, what shouldn't or when to send a PR, read on.

I fired: imagine you're revising a book, finding and correcting punctuation, misspellings and changing words wherever needed. We'll work from here.

 Correcting punctuation

We're going from the first to the last line of chapter one, finding missing or misplaced commas, periods and whatnot. We make a few fixes. Are we done here? Yes! So let's commit it.

Commit message:
fix punctuation on chapter one

 Correcting misspellings

We go back to the beginning of chapter one, but now we have a new task: fixing all words that are misspelled. We find and fix a few here and there and again we reach the end of this chapter. Guess what? Let's commit again!

Commit message:
fix misspellings on chapter one

 Improving understanding

While working on punctuation and misspellings we noticed that some sentences were too complex to be understood, so what if we refactor it with a few simpler synonyms? We change a few words, improve readability, and voilà, all makes sense now. Yes, we commit once more.

Commit message:
refactor chapter one with simpler synonyms

I guess we're done with this chapter.

It's time for a pull request

PR title:
Fix punctuation and misspellings and improve readability of chapter one

PR description:
This PR contains fixes to missing and misused punctuation, fixes for misspellings using en-GB and improvements of understanding and readability by using simpler synonyms that replace uncommon words on chapter one.

Let's review what we just did:

The commits were atomic. What does that mean? It means they should have only related changes within itself. Go back and read our commit messages again. Do you see it? Each commit deals with one and only one type of fix and/or change. If later on the author of the book says that the book should indeed be hard to be understood, fine, we just need to revert back the third commit, the one that adds synonyms to facilitate the understanding. Easy peasy.

The commit messages were straight forward, short and described what happened in the code that's being sent. Messages like
fix bug
or
add feature
are not descriptive and won't allow you to easily remember what was done at a later point in time. Also, good practice says that the first word should indicate the type of changes the commit contains:
fix
,
refactor
,
style
,
docs
, etc. You can find more about it here.

We grouped all commits that belong to the current changes on chapter one in the same PR. Nothing else. This makes the life of the person that is going to review it easier because the scope of the changes is easily identified, plus it does not interfere in chapter two, that in turn might already be under revision by the colleague next to you.

The PR has a succinct title, like our commits, but its description goes deeper into how the changes were applied.

It's likely that your case isn't revising chapter one of some book, but instead adding a new feature to your app, a new section on your website, or anything that belongs to the same "box", but the logic should remain the same.

I'd be happy to know if this analogy makes sense to you, or how else you would tackle such situation.

Happy coding!
