The Spreadsheet Was Supposed to Be Temporary

By Streamliners Studio

Picture a production planner opening a spreadsheet before the first shift.

Orders come from the ERP. Material availability comes from another report. Machine capacity needs a conversation with the floor supervisor. A customer has changed a delivery date, and someone has emailed a revised priority list.

The planner brings everything together and decides what the plant should run next.

The spreadsheet began as a practical solution to a specific gap. Over time, more decisions moved into the file. More people became dependent on the person maintaining it.

Eventually, a temporary workaround became part of the operating model.

When we evaluate a workflow like this, we want to understand why the workaround is still necessary and whether the economics of replacing it have changed.

AI is giving us more ways to address that question.

The business is already paying for the workaround

We begin by examining the work required to keep the process running.

Who collects the information? How often does someone check it? What happens when an order changes? Which decisions depend on one person knowing something the system does not capture?

A spreadsheet can be an excellent place to explore a problem. Teams can change assumptions, test calculations, and learn which information matters.

The economics become different when the same manual work repeats every day.

Consider an illustrative example. Four employees each spend 30 minutes a day assembling and checking operational information. Across 250 working days, that adds up to 500 hours a year.

Those hours represent capacity the business is already paying for. Recovering them could create more time for planning, supplier follow up, or resolving exceptions. Financial savings depend on how the business uses that capacity.

We also examine what happens while the information is being assembled.

A material shortage may become visible after a schedule has been issued. A supervisor may assign labor against an outdated workload. An inventory planner may place an order before discovering stock at another location.

A useful business case accounts for both the effort required to maintain the workaround and the consequences of making decisions through it.

AI is changing what we can economically build

Traditional ERP and warehouse management system implementations have often required substantial investment. Licenses are one part of that cost. Configuration, data migration, integrations, training, and ongoing support all contribute to the commitment.[Source]

Custom software historically carried its own development burden. Even a focused application required people to define requirements, write code, connect systems, test behavior, and maintain the result.

For a growing business with a specific operational gap, the expected benefit could struggle to justify that investment.

AI is changing that calculation.

We combine operational understanding with AI assisted development to build focused tools around the decisions a business needs to improve. AI can help with coding, test creation, documentation, and early versions that teams can review.

Used effectively, this approach can reduce development effort and make custom software considerably more affordable.Source

The amount saved depends on the application, the integrations, and the requirements. We assess those costs alongside security, training, maintenance, and support.

A focused planning tool can therefore have a much lower entry point than a broad ERP or WMS implementation. Its scope addresses the workflow that needs attention, while existing systems can continue serving the functions they already handle well.

That creates room to revisit useful tools that previously seemed too expensive to build.

Our work with By the Way Bakery

Our work with By the Way Bakery offers a concrete example.

As reported in The Wall Street Journal, we built a custom planning application using the bakery's spreadsheet data. For an order of 1,200 cakes, the system could calculate the eggs and powdered sugar required, while supporting ingredient, labor, and production planning.

The case illustrates the value of connecting an incoming order to the resources needed to fulfill it, a focused operational problem that growing businesses can recognize.

Read the original Wall Street Journal feature.

We start with the operating rules

Lower development costs make more projects possible. Operational understanding determines what we should build.

Return to the production planner.

Combining orders and inventory data would remove some manual work. Producing a useful schedule requires us to understand the plant's constraints.

Which machines can run each product? How do changeovers affect available capacity? Does material count as available if it is awaiting a quality release? Who can approve a priority change?

We work through those questions with the people responsible for the process.

The existing spreadsheet can provide valuable clues. A color code may indicate an exception. A hidden tab may hold a capacity assumption. A manual adjustment may compensate for a constraint the ERP does not represent.

We examine which rules reflect sound operating judgment and which habits the business should reconsider before carrying them into a new application.

Faster development makes that judgment more consequential. We still need to define the right process and test how the software behaves when conditions change.

We choose the first project around a decision

At Streamliners Studio, our starting point is a recurring decision with a clear user and a measurable consequence.

“Improve visibility” is too broad to guide a useful first release.

“Help planners identify material shortages before releasing tomorrow's schedule” gives us something specific to work with.

We can establish the information required, the systems involved, and the action the planner needs to take. We can also agree on how to measure progress.

That might mean less time preparing the schedule, fewer changes caused by unavailable materials, or faster resolution of planning exceptions.

We assess the available options before deciding to build. An existing feature, a configuration change, or an established product may provide the best answer.

Where custom development makes sense, we keep the initial scope clear and involve operations and IT throughout. We also establish who will maintain the operating rules, manage access, and support the application after launch. Source

That gives the business a practical way to evaluate the result and decide what should come next.

Revisit the assumptions behind the spreadsheet

We build software for manufacturing, distribution, supply chain, and logistics by connecting operational knowledge with AI assisted development.

The spreadsheet is a useful place to begin because it shows where people have already invested effort in making the operation work.

Some workarounds will remain sensible. Others may now have a stronger business case for a dedicated tool.

Our recommendation is to revisit the assumptions behind that decision.

How much work does the process require today? What does the business lose when information arrives late? What would a focused tool cost to build and operate now?

The spreadsheet may have been the right answer when it was created.

The economics of the next answer deserve a fresh look.

Learn more about how we work at streamliners.studio.

The US Ban on Canadian Imports: What's Actually Covered

The list includes beer, wine, spirits, whey, molasses, non-alcoholic beer and large motorcycles. Some headlines made it sound like all Canadian groceries were banned, but the restrictions apply only to the products on that list.

What's on the list

President Trump signed five proclamations on September 8. According to a trade summary of the Federal Register notices, three exclude products from entry outright, and the other two change which goods fall under the 50% tariffs already in place. Together the exclusions cover 68 tariff lines, and 53 of those are alcoholic beverages. CBC reports that beer, wine, cider, whisky, vodka, gin, rum, brandy and tequila are all named. CNBC adds that the alcohol coverage is mainly for products packaged for direct consumption, like bottles and cans, so bulk shipments under those same lines can still come in at the 50% duty.

The food side is small. It covers whey products (including whey protein concentrate and dried whey), cane and invert molasses, and non-alcoholic beer, which has its own tariff line and so gets treated separately from regular beer. Petrol-engine motorcycles and mopeds over 800cc are also banned, even though they have nothing to do with groceries.

Ban versus tariff

A tariff makes a product more expensive, but the importer can still bring it in by paying the duty. A ban means the product can't be entered at all, so paying more doesn't help. The banned products were already facing a 50% duty under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, and the new orders replace that duty with a full exclusion for the listed lines.

What isn't banned

Anything that isn't on the list can still enter the US, though it may face its own tariffs. Cheese is the case people ask about most. It isn't banned, but on September 15 the 50% duty was extended to certain cheeses and cheese substitutes, according to a Fastfrate trade bulletin, and other trade summaries also list specialty cheeses among the additions. The same change added furniture, mattresses, lamps and some paper and metal products, and removed salt, rock salt, cement and refined lead. Because coverage depends on the exact tariff classification, importers can't safely judge by product type alone.

Why bottles are still on shelves

The ban applies to goods entering the US on or after September 29. The Federal Register text says products that were imported but not yet formally entered for consumption before that date stay under the 50% duty instead of the ban. Stores can also keep selling stock they already have. Picture a liquor store owner with a shelf of Canadian whisky bought last month. That shelf is fine, but when she tries to reorder in a few weeks, the supplier may not be able to ship it.

How this got here

The US says Canada discriminates against American commerce, pointing to how it handles US alcohol and the dairy quotas that limit American cheese. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer called the moves a "natural consequence of Canada's continued discriminatory treatment," according to CNBC.

The timeline moved fast. Section 338 duties were first announced on July 20, took effect on August 22 after a short suspension, and talks between the two governments collapsed soon after. On September 8, Canada's retaliatory tariffs on about C$27.6 billion (roughly US$20 billion) of US goods took effect, hitting more than 700 products including steel, dairy, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Trump signed the five proclamations the same night.

Cost and what happens next

The American Action Forum estimates the banned goods at around $19.9 billion in annual Canadian imports, as reported by CNBC. Since most of the listed lines are alcohol, Canadian whisky and beer are likely to get scarce or pricier first. Food makers that buy whey or molasses from Canada will need new suppliers, and products with few alternatives will be hardest to replace.

None of this is necessarily permanent. The list could change through new proclamations, updates to the tariff schedule or a deal between the two countries, and CNBC reports that officials have sent mixed signals about whether talks will resume. Importers should check current US Customs and Border Protection guidance and the annexes to the proclamations before making decisions.

Meta VR Glasses are Meta's newest mixed reality device and one of the biggest changes to VR in years. Instead of building another heavy headset, Meta has focused on comfort by moving the battery and processor into a small pocket-sized compute puck. The result is a pair of lightweight VR glasses that weigh only about 100 grams while still offering high-quality visuals, hand tracking, and access to the Quest ecosystem.

With an official US price of $1,299.99 and a planned Spring 2027 release, these glasses are designed for people who want immersive entertainment, portable productivity, and a more comfortable way to experience mixed reality.

Meta VR Glasses at a Glance

Here’s your feature list in box style:

Specifications
Price $1,299.99

Release Date Spring 2027

Weight About 100 g

Display Micro-OLED

Resolution 2412 × 2288 per eye

Refresh Rate Up to 120 Hz

Battery Life Up to 3 hours

Storage 128 GB

RAM 12 GB

Control Eye tracking & hand gestures

What Are Meta VR Glasses?

Meta VR Glasses are lightweight mixed reality glasses that let you place digital screens, apps, and games into your real-world environment. Rather than completely blocking your surroundings like a traditional VR headset, they use color passthrough cameras to blend the physical and virtual worlds.

The glasses run Horizon OS, giving users access to many Quest apps and games. Their biggest advantage is comfort. By removing the heavy hardware from the headset itself, Meta has created a device that feels much lighter during extended use.

Meta VR Glasses Price and Release Date

Meta has officially announced the starting price at $1,299.99 in the United States. The company plans to launch the glasses in Spring 2027, although an exact release date has not been confirmed.

At launch, the package includes the glasses, the compute puck, 128GB of storage, and a 45W fast charger. Accessories such as Touch Plus controllers, prescription lens inserts, and expandable storage will be available separately.

Will They Launch in India?

Meta has not announced pricing or availability for India yet. The first release will focus on selected international markets, so Indian buyers may need to wait for a regional launch.

Design That Prioritizes Comfort

The design is what separates Meta VR Glasses from nearly every other VR headset.

Traditional headsets place the battery, processor, and cooling system directly on your head, making them feel bulky after long sessions. Meta moves those components into a small compute puck that fits inside your pocket, leaving only the lightweight display and sensors inside the glasses.

This makes a noticeable difference in everyday use. The glasses place less pressure on your face, feel cooler during extended sessions, and are easier to wear while watching movies or working. The only compromise is the thin cable connecting the glasses to the pocket-sized puck.

Display and Visual Experience

Meta VR Glasses feature high-resolution Micro-OLED displays with a resolution of 2412 × 2288 pixels per eye and refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The result is sharp text, vibrant colors, deep contrast, and smooth motion across apps and videos.

The display is especially well suited for watching films, browsing the web, and using multiple virtual monitors. While the field of view is smaller than larger VR headsets, the overall image quality remains impressive and helps create a premium viewing experience.

How Do You Control the Glasses?

Meta has designed the glasses so that controllers are optional rather than essential. Most everyday tasks can be completed using natural eye and hand movements.

You simply look at an item to highlight it, pinch your fingers together to select it, and navigate menus using hand gestures. Voice commands powered by Meta AI provide another hands-free way to interact with the interface. For compatible Quest games, Touch Plus controllers can also be connected when a more traditional gaming experience is needed.

Entertainment: A Personal Cinema Anywhere

One of the strongest reasons to buy Meta VR Glasses is entertainment. The glasses create the feeling of sitting in front of a giant private cinema screen without requiring a large television or projector.

Users will be able to enjoy 3D movies, IMAX Enhanced content, Disney+ supported experiences, and other streaming entertainment inside a virtual theater environment. Because the headset is much lighter than conventional VR devices, long movie sessions are far more comfortable.

Meta is also bringing immersive live sports to the platform, with more than 100 sporting events planned each year through its broadcast partnerships. Instead of watching from a standard television angle, viewers will experience matches from premium virtual viewing positions.

Gaming and the Quest Ecosystem

Although entertainment is the primary focus, Meta VR Glasses are still capable gaming hardware. They support more than 75 hand-tracking games, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and a wide range of apps available through the Quest ecosystem.

Players who already own Quest Touch Plus controllers can pair them with the glasses for compatible titles. However, dedicated VR gamers may still prefer Quest 3, as it offers a wider viewing area and includes controllers in the box.

A Portable Workspace for Professionals

Meta VR Glasses are not only built for entertainment—they also function as a portable productivity device.

Instead of carrying multiple monitors, users can create several floating virtual displays around their workspace. This makes it possible to write documents, browse the web, attend video meetings, answer emails, or even code from almost anywhere while keeping the screen completely private.

For remote professionals and frequent travelers, this could become one of the product's most valuable features.

Privacy and Security

The glasses include multiple cameras, eye-tracking sensors, and hand-tracking technology to power navigation and hologram calling. Meta says users will need to grant permission before apps can access sensitive tracking features.

While the company has shared its overall privacy approach, detailed device-specific policies for Meta VR Glasses are still expected before launch. Buyers who prioritize privacy should review those settings once they become available.

META vs QUEST 3

Here is the difference
Meta VR Glasses Quest 3
Price $1,299.99 $599.99

Weight About 100 g515 g

Display Micro-OLED LCD

Controllers Optional Included

Best For VR gaming Movies & productivity

The biggest difference is purpose. Quest 3 remains the stronger choice for immersive gaming, while Meta VR Glasses focus on comfort, media, and portable work.

Meta VR Glasses vs Apple Vision Pro

Feature Meta VR Glasses Apple Vision Pro

Starting Price $1,299.99 $3,699
Weight About 100 g 750–800 g
Design Glasses + compute puck Traditional
Main Focus Comfort & portability Premiumreality

Who Should Buy Meta VR Glasses?

Meta VR Glasses are best suited for people who value comfort as much as technology. They're an excellent option for movie lovers, remote professionals, frequent travelers, and anyone who finds traditional VR headsets too heavy to wear for long periods.

If your main priority is competitive or room-scale VR gaming, Quest 3 still offers better value. However, if you want a lightweight device for entertainment, work, and everyday mixed reality, Meta VR Glasses are the more compelling choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Meta VR Glasses cost? The official US starting price is $1,299.99.

When will Meta VR Glasses be released? Meta plans to launch them in Spring 2027.

Can I use them without controllers? Yes. Eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice controls handle most navigation, while controllers are optional for supported games.

How long does the battery last? Meta estimates up to 3 hours of continuous media playback.

Will they be available in India? Meta has not confirmed an India launch or pricing yet.

Final Verdict

Meta VR Glasses introduce a smarter approach to mixed reality by solving one of VR's biggest problems: comfort. Their lightweight design, sharp Micro-OLED display, intuitive hand tracking, and support for the Quest ecosystem make them an excellent device for movies, productivity, and immersive digital experiences.

At $1,299.99, they're clearly a premium product, but they also offer a much lighter and more accessible alternative to high-end mixed reality headsets. If you're looking for a portable VR experience that balances entertainment and work, Meta VR Glasses are one of the most exciting devices arriving in 2027.

Every time these two teams meet, it's more than just another international match. It's a contest between two nations known for fearless fast bowling, aggressive batting, athletic fielding, and an uncompromising style of cricket.

Whether it's a five-day Test, a World Cup knockout, or a high-scoring T20, SA vs AUS consistently produces memorable moments. From the legendary 434-run chase to unforgettable World Cup battles, this rivalry has shaped modern cricket and continues to captivate fans across the world.

In this guide, you'll discover the history of the rivalry, head-to-head records, greatest matches, key players, strengths of both teams, and what usually decides an SA vs AUS contest.

Why is SA vs AUS one of cricket's biggest rivalries?

Unlike traditional sporting rivalries based on geography, the South Africa–Australia rivalry was built through competition. Both teams have spent decades competing for the top spot in world cricket, especially in Test matches.

Australia built its reputation through dominance and consistency, while South Africa became famous for producing world-class fast bowlers and resilient teams capable of winning in any conditions. Their similar playing styles often create fast-paced, emotionally charged matches where every session matters.

What makes this rivalry special is that neither team is comfortable backing down. Whether playing in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Melbourne, or Sydney, the intensity rarely changes.

SA vs AUS head-to-head overview

The rivalry has remained remarkably competitive across all three international formats.

Format

Overall Picture

Test Cricket

One of the closest rivalries in modern cricket

ODI

Australia holds a slight historical advantage

T20 International

Very evenly matched

ICC World Cups

Australia has enjoyed greater success in knockout matches

While Australia has often performed better in major ICC tournaments, South Africa has produced several iconic bilateral victories, particularly in Test cricket.

The history behind the rivalry

Early years

South Africa and Australia first developed a meaningful rivalry in Test cricket during the 20th century. However, South Africa's absence from international cricket for many years meant the rivalry truly began after their return to international competition in the 1990s.

As South Africa rebuilt its cricketing strength, Australia was entering one of its greatest eras. The result was a series of unforgettable contests featuring legendary players on both sides.

The golden era

The 2000s elevated this rivalry to another level. Players like Jacques Kallis, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Ricky Ponting, Glenn McGrath, and Shane Warne helped create some of the highest-quality cricket ever played.

Series victories were hard-earned, away wins became celebrated achievements, and neither team was willing to surrender momentum easily.

The greatest SA vs AUS match ever played

The rivalry's most famous moment came on 12 March 2006 in Johannesburg.

Australia batted first and scored an unbelievable 434/4, which was the highest ODI total in history at the time. Most fans believed the game was already over.

South Africa had other ideas.

Led by captain Graeme Smith, the Proteas chased the impossible target and reached 438/9 with one wicket remaining. The successful chase became the highest in ODI history and completely changed how teams viewed big run chases.

Even today, that match is widely regarded as one of the greatest one-day internationals ever played because it combined fearless batting, relentless pressure, and a dramatic finish that few sporting events have matched.

World Cup rivalry: Australia often holds the edge

If bilateral cricket has been evenly matched, World Cups have told a different story.

Australia has repeatedly denied South Africa during crucial ICC tournaments. Knockout victories have strengthened Australia's reputation as one of cricket's strongest tournament teams, while South Africa has experienced several heartbreaking exits.

These matches are often remembered not because they were one-sided, but because they were incredibly close. Small moments—a dropped catch, a brilliant spell, or a crucial partnership—have frequently decided the result.

For neutral fans, SA vs AUS in a World Cup almost always guarantees high-quality cricket.

South Africa's biggest strengths

South Africa has always been built around pace, discipline, and athleticism. Even as generations change, those qualities remain part of the team's identity.

Fast bowling that changes games

South Africa consistently produces elite fast bowlers capable of bowling above 140 km/h while maintaining accuracy. Their attack is often strongest on pitches offering bounce and movement, making them dangerous against any batting lineup.

Powerful middle order

Modern South African batting combines stability with explosive stroke play. Players are comfortable rebuilding an innings after early wickets and accelerating during the final overs.

Outstanding fielding

Few teams save as many runs through athletic fielding. Sharp catching, direct-hit run-outs, and quick movement in the deep often create match-winning moments.

Australia's greatest strengths

Australia's success has always come from depth rather than dependence on individual stars. Every generation seems to produce another group of world-class cricketers.

Batting with intent

Australian batters rarely allow bowlers to settle. Whether opening the innings or finishing games, they prefer positive cricket and are willing to attack from the start.

Elite pace attack

Australia regularly fields one of the strongest fast-bowling units in international cricket. Their bowlers combine speed, swing, bounce, and exceptional control, making them effective in almost every condition.

Tournament mentality

Perhaps Australia's biggest advantage is its ability to perform under pressure. ICC tournaments have repeatedly shown how composed the team remains during knockout matches and high-pressure situations.

Key players to watch

Every SA vs AUS contest features players capable of changing the game within a few overs.

South Africa

Australia

Kagiso Rabada

Pat Cummins

Aiden Markram

Steve Smith

Marco Jansen

Travis Head

Heinrich Klaasen

Mitchell Starc

Rabada's pace against Australia's top order is always a fascinating battle, while Cummins and Starc remain among the world's most dangerous new-ball bowlers. In the middle overs, players like Klaasen and Head have the ability to completely shift momentum.

SA vs AUS in Test cricket

If you ask many cricket fans which format best represents this rivalry, they'll choose Test cricket.

Tests between South Africa and Australia are usually played on lively pitches where fast bowlers dominate early before batters gradually take control. Sessions often swing dramatically, making every spell and partnership important.

Unlike some Test rivalries that become defensive, SA vs AUS is usually aggressive. Captains attack with close fielders, bowlers hunt wickets rather than containment, and batters respond with positive intent.

That attacking mindset is one reason these series are often considered among the finest in world cricket.

SA vs AUS in ODI cricket

One-Day Internationals have produced some of the rivalry's most spectacular cricket.

Australia often builds innings around aggressive opening partnerships before accelerating through the middle overs. South Africa, meanwhile, has earned a reputation for chasing difficult totals and producing explosive batting finishes.

The balance between powerful batting and world-class pace bowling makes ODIs between these teams unpredictable until the final overs.

SA vs AUS in T20 Internationals

T20 cricket has added another exciting chapter to the rivalry.

With shorter games, momentum changes even faster. A brilliant powerplay, one explosive partnership, or two exceptional overs from a fast bowler can completely change the result.

Both teams possess hard-hitting batters and bowlers capable of delivering yorkers consistently, making their T20 meetings some of the most entertaining contests on the calendar.

What usually decides an SA vs AUS match?

Although every match is different, certain patterns appear repeatedly throughout this rivalry.

Winning the powerplay

Teams that score freely while preserving wickets usually control the rest of the innings. Early momentum is particularly valuable against two strong pace attacks.

Fast bowlers taking early wickets

Both sides rely heavily on their opening bowlers. Removing the opposition's top order quickly creates pressure that often leads to collapses later in the innings.

Fielding under pressure

South Africa and Australia are among cricket's best fielding teams. A single brilliant catch or direct-hit run-out frequently becomes the turning point in closely fought matches.

Middle-order partnerships

When early wickets fall, rebuilding becomes essential. The team that forms one substantial partnership usually gains the advantage, especially in ODI and Test cricket.

Five unforgettable SA vs AUS moments

Year

Why it's remembered

2006

South Africa chased 434 in the greatest ODI ever played

1999

Dramatic World Cup semifinal ended in a famous tie

2008

South Africa won a historic Test series in Australia

2018

A fiercely contested Test series captured global attention

Recent ICC events

Australia continued its strong knockout record

These matches remind fans why the rivalry remains one of cricket's most respected contests.

Who has the advantage today?

There isn't a simple answer.

Australia generally enters major ICC tournaments with exceptional depth and an outstanding record in pressure games. South Africa, however, possesses one of the strongest pace attacks in world cricket and has repeatedly shown it can defeat Australia in bilateral cricket.

Rather than one team dominating, the rivalry succeeds because both teams are capable of winning on any given day.

Why SA vs AUS continues to excite fans

Cricket has many famous rivalries, but few combine skill, history, and competitiveness as consistently as South Africa versus Australia.

These matches rarely feel predictable. Even when one team appears in control, the quality of fast bowling and attacking batting keeps the contest alive until the final session or final over. Every generation adds new heroes, new controversies, and new unforgettable performances.

That is exactly why SA vs AUS remains one of the finest rivalries in international cricket.

What does SA vs AUS mean?

SA vs AUS refers to an international cricket match between South Africa and Australia in Test, ODI, or T20 cricket.

Australia holds a slight historical advantage across international cricket, particularly in ICC tournaments, although the rivalry has remained closely contested.

What is the most famous SA vs AUS match?

The 2006 ODI in Johannesburg is widely considered the greatest match in the rivalry, with South Africa successfully chasing 434 runs.
