Hey Developer! You're working hard and doing great

One of the most challenging feelings we face is when we start to doubt ourselves. In our jobs, the obvious things around us, like the hum of the AC, the click of the keyboard, and our presence at the desk, are what others see. But what often goes unnoticed is the mental work we are constantly doing: our thoughts, ideas, and problem-solving that drive the outcomes others expect.

People might think our work is simple because the complexity is not always visible. They do not see the thought processes we navigate, the small but crucial decisions, or the way we manage multiple tasks and priorities. The effort it takes to find solutions and keep everything moving smoothly often stays behind the scenes.

The true measure of our success lies not in what others see, but in the silent battles we win each day.

The truth is, our hard work does not always need to be obvious to others. What matters most is that we recognize it ourselves. We are working hard, and our contributions are valuable, even if they are not immediately visible. It is okay to take breaks and give ourselves space to recharge. Taking care of our mental energy helps us stay effective in the long run.

We should be proud of the work we are doing, even if it is not always acknowledged by others. Every small effort adds up, and it is important to remind ourselves that we are making a difference, step by step. Yet, it is in these quiet struggles that our strength and resilience are forged. We learn, adapt, and grow, becoming better versions of ourselves with each obstacle we overcome. It is essential to celebrate these moments, no matter how small, as they contribute to our journey and reinforce our belief in our capabilities. Remember, each step you take, even when unrecognized, brings you closer to your goals and adds value to your work.

I built a 3D game and named it Kill The Corona.

  Description

It's a timepass game and I think it's a bit addictive too. You have to shoot the corona 3d model floating in the air, and also have to stay safe from the virus balls coming toward you by shooting them or dodging them (No score for hitting the ground balls).

  Background

As a kid, it was my dream to create a game and it's also a reason I am in the software development field. So here I am submitting the game I've created for the DOHackathon entry. I first created the game and I got an idea about the corona theme, so I have added corona models and virus texture on the objects and so.

  How I built it

I have used DigitalOcean for the first time, I don't have much idea of other features that DigitalOcean provides but it was pretty easy to deploy the app and I really liked it. I wanted to work on Three.js for a long time, I really dived into the 3d world and learned a lot about 3d objects, models, and the rendering process. Honestly, I was frustrated a few times calculating and setting the coordinates in 3d. But everything is set now and I can now take revenge on the corona.

  Additional Resources/Info

People who haven't yet checked out how cool Three.js please just have a look https://threejs.org/. I got this theme idea from my nephew, who recently dressed as coronavirus in his school fancy dress competition
Which tool do you use for making a presentation?

Being in this field or any other field, presenting the ideas, strategy, and goals effectively are really necessary for us, and for that, we need an effective presentation that attracts the audience and helps us to deliver it the way we want it to be delivered.

Some people say that the slides should be too simple and animation free and other stuff. But I think that is too boring. According to me, for an effective presentation, we need an effective theme, visual aids, charts that show statistics, and also smooth animations for the transition.

Google slides, LibreOffice Impress and Microsoft PowerPoint are very nice tools to create a presentation, But I found a nicer tool with very rich functionalities that I like very much and that tool is Prezi.

See a few samples in the following videos

I am using Prezi for more than 7 years. It also provides a very cool feature which is the Prezi video. It also has many video themes with the presentation props as shown in the following gif.

This way, you can effectively record your session and then can share it with anyone.

I got appreciation many times from the audience for my presentation and they also have asked what I have used to create such an effective and beautiful presentation!

So, Which tool you use for the presentation?

Happy presenting!

As a dev, what is your thought on marrying another dev?

I am not married as of now, and I really do think about it. I was hesitant to write this but I couldn't stop myself.

My thinking is, it's good for a dev to marry a dev as they both can understand each other more, can discuss things with each other and help. I think it also positively affects your career and productivity.

Please please please share your thoughts 😃

Monitor & React to File System Events on Linux Using inotify

Ever wondered when you make a change in a single file and on saving it some tools like angular or other clis or nodemon automatically react to it by bundling and redeploying the application?

Also while using an ide, when you do some mistake in code and save it, all the dependent files turn red due to an error!

The reaction is coded on ide or cli...but how they keep a watch on files and How it gets to know about events like create, modified, deleted and How we can custom automate something.

I needed such a tool that can listen to the file change events as I was using AngularJS and it does not have an inbuilt cli as angular2+ has. So I looked for something that can help me to automate the build. I use ubuntu so I searched and I found the tool named inotify.

I achieved the hot deploy feature by using the inotify with a bash script. I have written a shell script like below

or check out this git repo

        Maulikdes
       /
        file_watcher

      This project is a shell script file that can be used to watch the file changes and automate the actions

I just have to now run the following command and not have to do the manual steps I was doing after changing files

bash filename.sh

I'm not gonna bore you by writing about more functionalities, and stuff of inotify but let's just take a look at the simple example
First to install the inotify, just hit the following command

sudo apt-get install -y inotify-tools

Here is a simple bash script which watches the changes of a file name a.txt and on change, it writes the log to b.txt

while true; do
    # the next statement will wait for the inotify event to get triggered
    change=$(inotifywait -e modify a.txt)
    # append he change log to the b.txt file
    echo $change "$(date +"%T")" >> b.txt;
done

Now let's see the demo

Cultural richness at work

India is a secular country so people of different religions and faiths have the freedom to practice and follow their religion without any fear of discrimination. So we have so many festivals to celebrate :)

I strongly believe that celebrating festivals and performing cultural activities at an organization improves the culture of an organization. It helps the employees to get along with each other and it's also refreshing.

So let's take a look at which and how festivals are celebrated at my current organization

  Navratri

We celebrate Navratri wearing traditional clothes, gathering, and doing a traditional dance which is called Garba as you can see in the video. A huge amount of people gather and do it. We also celebrate this at our organization. This is so much fun doing the Garba with people you work

  Holi

Holi is a popular ancient Hindu festival, also known as the Indian "festival of spring", the "festival of colors", or the "festival of love". The festival signifies the victory of good over evil. We celebrate Holi by applying colors to each other. It's also called a day to forget and forgive.

  Diwali

Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated in India. We celebrate Diwali with Diya and lighting, home decoration, shopping, fireworks, puja (prayers), gifts, feast, and sweets. At the organization, we decorate the whole office. We make rangolis, we wear a traditional dress on that day and click photos.

  Christmas

We celebrate Christmas by decorating our desks, office, and a secret Santa tradition. So far I got a camera bag (I don't have a camera), a gym bag(I don't go to a gym), and aviator goggles (I used it once) But it's fun doing these things.

Eid is a Muslim religious festival. On Eid, one of the presidents of our office brings Homemade Sevaiya Kheer(Desert) and we all get to enjoy this perfect dessert.

The best thing about all of these activities is everyone gets together and celebrates leaving all the work stress and lives it up.

Which cultural activities do you perform at your organization or which festivals you celebrate and how?

Why did I choose to become a developer?

I was in 7th standard when my father bought me a computer. As a kid, my only interest in the computer was playing games. Luxor, Road rash, Zuma were games that I played first and then some more cool games like GTA: Vice City, Prince of Persia, and so on.

While playing games, I thought

what If I could make a game that has characters that I've designed, rules that I've created, and then play it

I then researched how one can make a game and what study is required to do so. Based on that I decided that I would be a software engineer and develop games.

Well, my only concern and desire were playing and creating games but as soon as I entered the real world, I realized that there are many more cool things we can develop including games and it made me a developer.

But yes, in this journey, I've developed my first game in C using the graphics library which was not easy for me but anyway I have done that.

Here is the video of that game. Though it's not good enough, there are flickers also in the game and there are many patches in the game to make it work, it's very special to me. And I am very happy and fortunate that I am in a field I have an interest in.

I have developed this game many years ago and I can improve it to a very good level still I like it the way it is... so I never touched it since then. Maybe the incompleteness and flaws of this game are making it perfect. It reminds me of my dreams, imaginations, and the golden time of imaging this stuffs.

Here is the Github repo for that game.

        SpaceShip

      This is a game developed in C using graphics library

What's your story, What made you a developer or whatever you are?

What is load testing? and why is it important?

The simple definition of load testing is

Load testing is the process of putting demand on a system and measuring its response.

Generally, we use manual and automation testing in our project which is okay for checking if the functionality is working fine and those are functional tests.

But, Just because your application will pass a functional test doesn't mean it can perform the same under a load.

Consider your application is working fine for 10 simultaneous users. Are you sure that your application will behave fine with more people using it simultaneously? If so, How many people will be able to use it simultaneously?

We can't have the same number of QAs as end-users who simultaneously check the system unless we have a budget to hire these many QAs.

Many times we hear that the site goes down due to sudden spikes in site traffic. So this type of testing is necessary, right?

So How we will ensure that our application will work well under the pressure like us :) !

We can't have actual users to test, but we can have virtual users right? who can do the requests for us simultaneously... Load testing uses this concept of creating virtual users. Through the load testing tools and libraries, we can test our application against sudden spikes in the traffic and catch the behaviour before it directly occurs in production.

Moreover, performance testing will help us scale our project. It draws a line and we should optimize our application to not cross that line.

There are many load testing tools available, Some of them are

k6

WebLOAD

LoadNinja

SmartMeter.io

LoadView

Apache JMeter

LoadRunner

Appvance

NeoLoad

LoadComplete

These tools are awesome and provide many functionalities and performance statistics such as copying the user behaviour and based on that do the load testing with virtual users and so on.

Fed up with Git conflicts😤?: Rebase regularly and chill!

Git is a blessing, isn't it?

Absolutely yes, if used properly.

The general workflow that we follow in the project development is like

If you have observed the above flowchart, there is a red line drawn from the master branch to the merge commit and that is intentional.

Most of the time, many developers work on the same project and on different issues, and while we work, the master branch could have been updated with other's change and the master branch could have new commits. So let's update the diagram.

OK, updated the diagram. But what is the issue?
The issue is, there are possibilities of getting conflicts and we have to resolve either by merging the master branch to your branch or rebasing your branch with the master.

Now let's get this straight why I choose to rebase over merge

No extra merge commit
Master's history remain clean and linear

So when we merge master to our branch, we need to resolve the conflicts, and then it adds a new merge commit.

While in rebasing our branch is first updated with master and then our commits will be applied one by one.

If you are working on a complex task, you might need more time and the master branch will not wait for you, so I suggest to rebase your branch regularly(daily) and if there are conflicts resolve it, Otherwise at creating a pull-request or merge-request of a big task, conflicts may haunt you.

Can Insomnia Be Cured?

Insomnia is my old friend. I like to work at night as there is no disturbance and I can concentrate well due to that. So I used to read, learn, and complete assignments at night from the 10th standard(year 2011) and I continued. It eventually became a habit and now I have trouble falling asleep. It many times helps though and many times I want to get rid of it.

I have read a few remedies, haven't tried anything yet but I am curious Has anyone been cured of insomnia? If yes, please share How in the comment!

Thank you

Hey Developer, Go get a life!

We developers have the common issue of managing work-life balance. Being an experienced developer, I have the following things to say

  Success, people praising you... it goes away

Don't try to be a hero developer. Yes, there are certain perks of being one but as this point title says... it all goes away and you will end up with everybody expecting you to complete their task they have given to you because they think you would do it. And you have to do it for your image because you have built it like this. Learn to say NO. If you are a good developer and there are 100 percent chances that you will get more work as people will think that you can do this even if there is another ordinary developer is available. We have to make everyone understand that yes, I am a good developer but I will not do everything everyone asks because I have a life. It becomes a very big problem when it becomes a routine and when you realize it, it's late... Now you will think if you start saying NO then people will judge you and yes...people will. That's why I ask beginners to manage their work-life balance from the start.

  Choose the target audience wisely

Sometimes you work hard for something but don't get enough responses and praise and it demoralizes you. The problem is you are showcasing your ability to the wrong target audience. Think about your audience first. e.g. your organization might not give you enough attention to your innovation but on dev.to if you share it effectively, you will get responses, suggestions and other innovative friends

  You're earning for yourself and your family

We have to remind ourselves that we are earning for ourselves so give time to yourself and your loved ones. Extra hours spent on work may pay you more but it's not worth more than spending time with your loved ones. Nobody except you will remember the sleepless nights that you spent on work.

  Yes, developer life also gets boring

At some point, developer life also becomes boring so enjoy it. Make friends at your workplace, chit chat, gossip, take breaks, and go on a trip. Do whatever that makes you happy to stay away from a boring life.

  You can overcome Imposter syndrome and Depression but it's better not to fall into it

Everybody from beginner to experienced people feels that they don't have enough knowledge sometimes. The developer communities really help in this case. You can share your knowledge and you will find that your knowledge is helping others and you will also get a deeper knowledge of things that you follow which keeps up your interest. Spending some time in a related community is really worthwhile.

At last, as these lines from the climb song say

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

It's all about the journey. I am not saying destination doesn't matter, it does but so does the journey. Don't rush, enjoy it which will eventually make your life easy and joyful but If you don't have life, you don't have to worry about WLB.

Using Angular component in Non-Angular App

We all are mostly aware of the component-based approach and we create components in certain technologies that work within that technology environment. Like angular component works only in angular and Component created with Vue work only in Vue.

But what if I want to use a component I have created with angular on other platforms?

Let's start with What is web components and then do this magic with angular.

  Web Components

Web components are a set of web platform APIs that allow you to create new custom, reusable, encapsulated HTML tags to use in web pages and web apps. Custom components and widgets build on the Web Component standards, will work across modern browsers, and can be used with any JavaScript library or framework that works with HTML.

<script type="module" src="./js/my-element.js"></script>
...
<my-element></my-element>

Using a custom element is pretty simple just like above code and you also can find how to create in javascript in this article

This article is about creating such a web component using angular so that we can later use that element anywhere by just importing a single file so let's create one.

Step-1 Create an angular project

ng new web-components

Step-2 Add element library

ng add @angular/elements

Step-3 Create web component inside the created directory

ng generate component my-element

Step-4 Write code in component

I will create a simple counter component having two buttons for increment and decrement of the counter.

Step-5 Open app.module.ts file and do following
Import following

import { Injector } from '@angular/core';
import {createCustomElement} from '@angular/elements';

Remove the declaration of AppComponent, also remove it from bootstrap.
Remove the app.component.ts and related HTML, CSS and spec.ts file and it's import

Add your component as an entry component inside @NgModule({})

entryComponents: [MyElementComponent]

inject Injector in AppModule class and define a custom element

export class AppModule {
  constructor(private injector: Injector) {}
  ngDoBootstrap() {
    const el = createCustomElement(MyElementComponent, { injector: this.injector });
    customElements.define('my-element', el);
  }

Step-6 Write some code in your component...

Step-7 Build the project

ng build --prod --output-hashing none

Step-8 Bundle the files generated in dist
Multiple files get generated in dist folder including main.js, pollyfill.js runtime.js and scripts.js. In newer versions, two types of files get generated (with es2015 and es5).
To concat files into a single file,
first, install required dependency for concatenation

npm install fs-extra concat

create a js file in the main folder and include the following code. I am naming it as bundle.js

const fs = require('fs-extra');
const concat = require('concat');
(async function build() {
    const files = [
        './dist/web-components/runtime-es5.js',
        './dist/web-components/polyfills-es5.js',
        './dist/web-components/scripts-es5.js',
        './dist/web-components/main-es5.js',
    ]
    await fs.ensureDir('elements')
    await concat(files, 'elements/my-element.js');
    await fs.copyFile('./dist/web-components/styles.css', 'elements/styles.css')
})()

Step-9 Run the following code to concat all files
> node bundle.js

New folder named elements will be created and you can now use that element by importing the generated file and rendering the element that you have mentioned while creating custom element in app.module.ts

<script src="my-element.js" ></script>
<h4>Element below is created in angular</h4>
<my-element></my-element>

Step-10 Now run that HTML file in the browser and you will see that the component created in angular now working on a simple HTML page
Here is the codepen demo

Here is the angular code

        Maulikdes
       /
        web-components

      This project is a sample for creating angular web-elements
