Building Hoasel: What I Learned About Ethical Engagement After Winning Tech4Dev

I didn’t start building Hoasel because I wanted to “disrupt” anything. I started because something felt wrong.

As a developer and product designer, I kept seeing platforms built around engagement that extracted value from users without giving anything meaningful back. Clicks, attention, participation — all unpaid. Meanwhile, businesses paid for impressions that didn’t convert, and users were treated as metrics instead of people.

That frustration eventually turned into a product idea; and later, a winning pitch at the Tech4Dev Bootcamp.

The Engagement Problem Developers Don’t Talk About Enough

Most engagement platforms today optimize for numbers, not value.

• Fake participation
• Inflated metrics
• Forced actions users don’t care about

As builders, we often ignore the ethical layer because “that’s how the market works.” But I kept asking myself:

What if engagement was treated like work?

Work deserves compensation. And participation should be intentional, not manipulative.

What Hoasel Actually Does (No Growth Hacks)

Hoasel is a reward-based task and opportunity platform.

It enables organizations, startups, NGOs, researchers, and communities to post real tasks, such as:
• Surveys and research participation
• Product testing and feedback
• Community engagement and advocacy
• Volunteering and micro-jobs
• Early opportunities

Contributors choose tasks they’re willing to do and earn structured rewards in return.

No bots.
No forced engagement.
No artificial loops.

Winning Tech4Dev With an Ethical Idea

When I pitched Hoasel at Tech4Dev, I honestly wasn’t sure how it would land.

I wasn’t selling virality or shortcuts. I was talking about systems, incentives, and long-term trust.

To my surprise, the judges connected deeply with it. Hoasel emerged as the winning project among many strong ideas — not because it promised fast growth, but because it addressed a real structural problem in how engagement platforms are built.

Key Lessons I Took Away as a Builder

This journey reinforced a few things for me:

Ethics is not anti-scale — it actually builds stronger platforms

Users value transparency more than clever manipulation

Simple incentive systems beat complex growth hacks

People don’t mind contributing — they mind being exploited.

 What’s Next for Hoasel

Hoasel is currently preparing for early access onboarding.

The MVP focuses on the task ecosystem, but the long-term vision is to evolve into an AI-assisted ethical task and opportunity marketplace — where users can discover tasks, communities, research, and opportunities aligned with their values.

The goal isn’t to replace social platforms. It’s to fix how value flows through participation.

 Final Thoughts

As developers, we have more power than we think.

Every product encodes values.
Every incentive system shapes behavior.

Hoasel is my attempt to prove that you can build platforms that reward people fairly — and still grow.

 About Me

I’m Mayowa Ogunnubi, a software engineer, product designer, and tech founder focused on building ethical, value-driven platforms. I’m the founder of Hoasel.
