Yıldırımların doğrudan Tanrı’nın gazabı olduğuna inanılan dönemlerden, bu doğa olayının bilimsel bir açıklamasının olabileceği düşüncesine geçiş, modern bilimin önemli kırılma noktalarından biridir. Bu sürecin öncülerinden biri olan Amerikalı bilim insanı Benjamin Franklin, yıldırımın elektriksel bir olay olduğu hipotezini ortaya atmış ve bunu deneyle kanıtlamaya çalışmıştır.&lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Zamanla mühendislik ve fizik bilgisi arttıkça, paratoner sistemleri de gelişti. 20. yüzyılda aktif paratoner sistemleri ortaya çıktı. Bu sistemler, yıldırım düşmeden önce iyonlaştırıcı sinyaller göndererek yıldırımı kendine çeker. Böylece koruma çapı artırılır. Ancak bu gelişmiş sistemlerin temeli yine Franklin’in ortaya koyduğu mekanizmadır.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Günümüzde kullanılan paratonerler, yalnızca çatıya yerleştirilen bir metal çubuktan ibaret değildir. Enerjiyi doğru bir şekilde toprağa ileten altyapı, bu enerjinin başka sistemlere zarar vermemesi için yapılan yalıtım çalışmaları ve düzenli bakımlar, tüm bu sistemin bir bütün olarak değerlendirilmesini zorunlu kılar.&lt;/p&gt;
