Imagine two public blockchains:

One has 10 million users, but most of them rarely use the network again after signing up and claiming rewards.

The other has only 1 million users, but they continue to transact, use DApps, participate in Staking, join communities, and generate new on-chain activity.

Which network is more valuable?

The answer may not be as simple as the user numbers suggest.

In Web3, User Growth has always been one of the easiest metrics to attract attention: How many wallet addresses has a network reached? How many new users have joined its communities? How quickly are registrations growing?

But the question that really matters is:

After gaining 1 million new users, how many of them actually start using the network?

If users simply “arrive” without making transactions, using applications, participating in Staking, or engaging in other on-chain activities, even the most impressive growth curve may remain little more than a user count.

Incentives can drive a wave of growth. But a real network economy has to answer a bigger question: What happens after the growth?

For a public blockchain, “having users” and “having users actively use the network” are two very different things.

But as Web3, RWA, DeFi, digital assets, and global digital services continue to develop, one question is becoming increasingly important: If identity is becoming more important, who should actually control it?

Traditional identity systems typically rely on centralized institutions such as platforms, companies, or governments to create, store, and verify identities. Users can use their identities, but they do not necessarily truly own or control their identity data.

Decentralized Identity (Decentralized Identifier, DID) seeks to change this model by shifting identity from “managed by institutions” to “controlled by users.” At the same time, technologies such as Verifiable Credentials and cryptography make it possible to verify identity without exposing complete personal information every time.

So, what problems do traditional identity systems face? How does DID address them? And how does ME ID build the next generation of digital identity?

I. Why Do We Need Decentralized Identity?

Traditional internet identity systems primarily solve one problem: allowing platforms to know “who you are” and giving you access to their services.

This has given us email accounts, phone numbers, social accounts, bank accounts, and other identity systems. But these solutions also share a common problem:

DID can be understood as a decentralized identity entry point in the digital world. It does not need to directly contain sensitive information such as a name or national ID number. Instead, structures such as a DID Document record information related to identity control and verification.

A DID can represent:

Individuals;
Organizations;

Other verifiable entities.

2.VC: Making Identity Verifiable

Having a DID does not prove “who you are.” Therefore, DID is typically combined with Verifiable Credential (VC).

For example, a user may have credentials showing:

KYC has been completed;
The user is over 18;
Membership in a particular organization;
A professional qualification;
Ownership of a certain type of asset.

Users can choose which proof to provide based on different scenarios.

Identity is therefore no longer simply an account, but a composable and verifiable identity credential system.

3.Holder, Issuer, and Verifier

A DID system typically includes three core roles:

Holder: The user who owns the DID and identity credentials and decides whether and to whom they are presented.
Issuer: An institution or service provider responsible for verifying identity information and issuing credentials to users.
Verifier: An application that needs to verify a user’s identity or a specific identity attribute.

The basic process is: User → Requests a credential from the Issuer → Receives a VC → Provides proof to the Verifier → Verifier verifies it.

This allows users to avoid handing over their complete identity data to every application. Instead, they can selectively provide the proof required for a specific scenario.

4.DID Changes Who Controls Identity

But DID still needs to address another question: How can DID, PoP, KYC, privacy protection, and blockchain be truly integrated?

This is exactly the direction ME ID seeks to explore.

For identity information such as age, qualifications, and compliance status, ME ID uses VC for management. At the same time, privacy technologies such as Zero-Knowledge Proofs allow users, in certain scenarios, to prove a specific claim without revealing their complete information.

For example: Prove that “the user is at least 18 years old”

Instead of: Revealing the user’s complete date of birth

This moves identity verification from “submit all information” toward minimal information disclosure.

4.Blockchain: Establishing Trusted Identity Status

ME ID Protocol uses the blockchain infrastructure of ME Network to record identity- and credential-related states, including:

Issuer / Holder registration information recorded on-chain;

One of the core problems blockchain was originally designed to solve was how to enable nodes distributed around the world to reach agreement on the same network state without relying on a centralized institution.

But as blockchain has evolved from early single-chain models toward DeFi, NFT, RWA, Rollup, and multi-chain ecosystems, the problem has become more complex.

When a blockchain needs to support more transactions, more users, and more applications, the consensus mechanism is no longer only about “how to reach agreement.” It must also find a better balance between security, decentralization, and efficiency.

PoW emphasizes establishing security costs through physical resources; PoS emphasizes establishing security constraints through economic staking; BFT-based mechanisms place greater emphasis on enabling validators to reach deterministic consensus quickly.

Different designs are essentially answering the same question:

How can a network without a centralized authority reach a consistent state more efficiently while maintaining security?

II. Consensus Mechanisms Are Evolving From “Security First” Toward “Security + Efficiency”

In the early days of blockchain, the primary question was whether a network could operate securely.

Bitcoin established a clear security model through PoW: attacking the network requires enormous computational and energy costs.

But as blockchain began to support larger-scale applications, simply increasing the cost of security could not solve every problem.

Large amounts of computation lead to higher operating costs, while transaction confirmation speed, throughput, and finality also become important considerations for large-scale applications.

As a result, the industry gradually moved toward PoS and BFT-based consensus mechanisms.

Behind this evolution is an important idea:

Instead of relying primarily on massive amounts of computation for network security, blockchain can use validators, staked assets, and multi-node voting to establish economic and consensus security.

This has led to several important directions in consensus design:

Lower resource consumption: reducing reliance on large-scale computational power;
Faster finality: confirming transactions more quickly and reducing waiting costs;
Higher efficiency: using validator voting to reach consensus more rapidly;
Greater scalability: enabling the consensus layer to work together with the execution layer, data availability layer, and other modules.
As blockchain moves further into the Rollup and modular era, consensus mechanisms are also changing.

The consensus layer no longer needs to handle all computation. Instead, it can focus more on transaction ordering, block production, and final confirmation of the network state.

This is the context behind ME Network’s adoption of a PPoS + ME-Tendermint consensus architecture.

III. How Does ME Network Rethink Consensus: PPoS + ME-Tendermint

ME Network does not simply adopt traditional PoS. Instead, it builds on the economic security model of PoS by introducing validator identity verification and governance-based admission mechanisms, forming Permitted Proof of Stake (PPoS).

At the same time, ME Network uses ME-Tendermint, a BFT consensus mechanism based on Tendermint / CometBFT, at the underlying layer to handle transaction ordering, block production, and final confirmation.

Simply put:

PPoS addresses “who can participate in consensus” and “how to establish economic and identity-based constraints,” while ME-Tendermint addresses “how participants can quickly reach agreement on blocks.”

Together, these two components form the underlying consensus system of ME Network.

PPoS: Moving From “Staking” Toward “Identity + Staking + Governance”

The core of traditional PoS is staking.

Validators need to stake the required assets and use economic costs to constrain their behavior. Validators that participate normally can receive incentives, while double signing, malicious behavior, or other violations of consensus rules may result in economic penalties such as Slashing.

ME Network further introduces a validator admission mechanism on this foundation.

In addition to meeting staking requirements, validators must complete identity verification and pass the relevant governance review before joining the validator set.

Therefore, PPoS can be understood as: economic constraints + trusted identity + governance-based admission.

This design means that validators are no longer simply anonymous addresses on the chain. Instead, they become network participants with verifiable identities and traceable responsibilities.

The core advantages of PPoS include:

Trusted identity: Validators have verifiable identities, reducing risks associated with anonymous malicious nodes;
Economic security: MEC staking and Slashing mechanisms increase the cost of malicious behavior;
Governable participation: Validator admission and exit are managed through network governance;
Compliance-friendly: Better suited to application scenarios such as digital identity and RWA that require trusted participants;
Lower energy consumption: Does not rely on the large-scale computational competition required by PoW.
Therefore, the goal of PPoS is not simply to “limit validators,” but to explore a new balance between decentralization, security, and trusted participation.

ME-Tendermint: Enabling Faster Consensus

PPoS defines how validators participate, while actual block consensus is completed by ME-Tendermint.

ME-Tendermint is built on the Tendermint / CometBFT BFT consensus protocol. Its core approach is to use multiple rounds of validator voting to confirm blocks without relying on large-scale computational competition.

Once more than 2/3 of validator voting power agrees on the same block, that block can reach final confirmation.

This provides several important characteristics:

Fast finality: Once consensus is reached, a block can be confirmed without waiting for a large number of subsequent blocks;
High security: Under the BFT security assumptions, honest validators can maintain a consistent network state;
High efficiency: Consensus is reached through validator voting, avoiding the large-scale computational competition of PoW;
Modular support: The consensus layer is decoupled from the execution layer, settlement layer, and other functions, providing underlying security for modules such as RollApp.
This also reflects an important design principle of modular blockchain: let the consensus layer focus on “trust,” while other modules focus on “scaling.”

IV. How Does the ME Network Consensus Process Work?

Understanding a consensus mechanism requires more than knowing which algorithm it uses. It is also important to understand how a block moves from transactions to a final confirmed state.

The ME-Tendermint consensus process consists primarily of four stages:

Proposal

At the current block height and round, the designated Proposal Validator packages transactions and generates a candidate block.

The proposer then broadcasts the candidate block to other validators.

Pre-vote

After receiving the candidate block, other validators verify it, including:

Whether the block format is correct;
Whether the transactions are valid;
Whether the block state complies with network rules;
Whether the previous block state is correct.
If the block is valid, validators send a Pre-vote for the block.

If the block is invalid or a timeout occurs, validators may vote Nil.

Pre-commit

When a candidate block receives more than 2/3 of validator voting power in Pre-votes, validators enter the Pre-commit stage.

Validators confirm the block again and broadcast Pre-commit messages.

If sufficient consensus cannot be reached, the network moves to the next consensus round.

Commit

When a block receives more than 2/3 of validator voting power in Pre-commits, the network enters the Commit stage.

Once the block is committed: the block state is officially written on-chain, final confirmation is achieved, and the network moves to the next block height.

Once a block completes Commit, it has finality and does not require multiple subsequent blocks for further confirmation.

This mechanism enables ME Network to complete block confirmation through multiple validators without relying on massive computational power.

Introduction: The Vanishing “Y-Axis”

The lifecycles of tokens and applications are growing ever shorter, with the pattern of spiking during bull markets and collapsing to zero in bear markets becoming the norm. On-chain activity, TVL (Total Value Locked), and transaction counts all surge in lockstep in a bull market, yet once the bear market hits, projects fall dormant and their charts flatline to zero. Once a user completes ME ID advanced verification, the system will bind a permanently staked MEC to their account. This MEC cannot be withdrawn, traded or transferred. It has been in a permanent staking state since the genesis block, and generates continuous UBI (Unconditional Basic Income) yields every day.

Users do not need to do additional staking or perform frequent operations, as the system automatically and continuously distributes yields to accounts with bound identities. Foreword: Re-laying the Foundation for RWAs

For many years, Web3 has spoken extensively about Real World Assets (RWAs): real estate, accounts receivable, national debt, carbon credits, computing power, gold — all awaiting tokenization. While the narratives surrounding them have always been grand and ambitious, actual implementation has consistently been slow.

The industry often offers two self-justifications: first, high compliance thresholds, and second, an underdeveloped infrastructure. While these explanations are not incorrect, they only touch upon the surface of the problem, failing to address the core issue.

A more accurate understanding reveals that what RWAs truly need to bring on-chain extends far beyond the assets themselves. It encompasses the entire underlying system of rights and obligations.

Most public blockchains excel at facilitating asset liquidity, but RWAs demand another layer of support: ensuring accountability. You can tokenize a building into 100,000 shares, but what truly determines its viability as a “usable asset” are the subsequent critical processes: how rent is settled, how disclosures are aligned, how disputes are traced, and how defaults are handled. If these processes continue to rely on off-chain whitelists, manual approvals, and email reconciliations, then even if the assets flow on-chain, accountability remains off-chain. RWAs may appear to be “on-chain,” but in reality, they have only achieved superficial packaging.

The bottlenecks in many RWA projects are very specific: a delay in whitelist updates forces transactions back to manual approval; an irreconcilable payment requires email confirmation for settlement; in case of a dispute, the responsible party cannot be located on-chain.

This is a core reason why ME Network has chosen a differentiated path: prioritizing “real people” as the fundamental unit of the system before advancing the asset on-chain process.

The True Unit of RWA: Contracts

The core difficulty in implementing Real World Assets (RWAs) is not a scarcity of assets or capital, but rather the enforceability of contracts. When a real-world asset is introduced on-chain, it naturally dissects into three core dimensions:
