Stages of Startup Developing

Before reaching the status of a unicorn, every startup needs to pass several stages of development. For instance: pre-seed, seed, series A, series B, and series C. Each of these stages is distinct and valuable in its own right.

In reality, not every startup reaches at least the **Seed **phase (up to $250,000). Below, you can see the table that illustrates the differences between each stage and the monetary valuation for each of them.

As you can see, unicorns usually belong to Series A.

Too late, too early, or just right?

Alright, now you know what unicorn status is and the other stages of a startup. Now it’s time to talk about one thing that 64% of unicorns have in common. In one word, it’s — Timing .

That’s right, not fundraising, not a qualified team, and not even the business model. The most crucial thing that most successful unicorns have is great timing. I’ll try to explain to you what that means.

Before YouTube , there were lots of similar services. However, none of them have reached the same level. YouTube was at the right place at the right time. In other words, it was founded at a time when it was needed. Then, in less than a year, Google bought it for more than $1.65 billion , and now it's around $180 billion .

You can also take a look at crypto projects or at others that are related to new technologies. All of them are relevant only in a growing market or when we see a trend. Projects are being created in the bear market but growing in the bull market.

For example, you can take a look at NFT . I have nothing to do with it; furthermore, I have my own collection and have dove deep into this sphere. However, while the whole crypto market is going down, it is literally impossible for NFT projects to grow.

That’s why timing is one of the most important parts of any successful startup. Take a look at any billion-dollar startup, and you'll notice that the majority of them were founded at the best possible time .

If your startup launches too soon, you might not see the traction you were hoping for. If it enters the market too late, it will have to compete with established players and overcome entry barriers. That’s pretty simple, but almost nobody understands it!

You can also look at the timing as luck. The funny thing is that it really is. However, fortune smiles on those who make any effort to achieve it. In other words, you need to do everything right so you’ll have more chances to win, and timing is the most important part of this process!

Below, you can see an illustration that shows how much each of these parts contributes to the success of the startup. In other words, you can see the importance of each part of development. As you can see, timing is crucial and dominates most unicorns.

You can also see that funding is in the very last place and almost never matters. That’s right, many of the biggest corporations were founded without any budget or fundraising; it was just an idea and great timing .

The qualified team and business model are also important, but they do not have as much of an impact on the final result.

Every opportunity that you see coming your way is a result of great timing. Every person that you've met is the result of great timing. And every product that succeeds is a product of great timing!

Also, imagine a situation where you’ve discovered something absolutely amazing that will restructure your mind. This thing can be seen on your Medium main page, and if you didn't read about it, you would be the same. This small chance to see something valuable can change the whole direction of your future. Our world is constantly reshaping. New directions and opportunities are constantly appearing in every sphere. and programming is used in almost all of them. It doesn’t matter if you love to work with AI algorithms or blockchain technology or just want to start your own business. In any case, you’ll need a website, some sort of database, or something else.

Right now, programming is like writing several decades ago. In the last century, people needed to write because it was necessary. Without writing, you couldn’t do almost anything. Nowadays, it’s the same situation with programming.
You literally can’t do anything without knowing at least the basics of programming. It doesn’t matter which one you choose; just understanding the principles of programming will be enough. and I’ll explain why!

With Programming, You Can Build Anything

Without programming, you can’t do anything. You can’t build a website, you can’t create an application, you can’t integrate some useful APIs, and you can’t use web scripting. These are only a few things that you’re not able to do without knowing how to program.

Imagine you have a genius startup idea and want to build it immediately. You can hire someone who will do everything for you, but we’ll talk about it later. First of all, you obviously need to understand the working principle behind the application itself. You can’t pay someone to come up with a billion-dollar idea and build everything for you.

I can give you several examples. I wanted to build an NFT Collection and upload it to Opensea. After drawing each element, I needed to write code to combine several parts together and get a final output. I’ve written combining and generating algorithms in JavaScript, but you can find many of them on GitHub. However, you won’t understand how to do it without knowing how it works.

So you need to know programming to start building something. Even if you just want to open a new business, you’ll definitely need some basic knowledge of programming to really grow!

You Don’t Need to be a Pro

I’m not saying to you that you have to pass the whole computer science class and become a programming genius. You definitely shouldn’t if you want to learn programming as an additional skill. Knowing the basics of some programming languages and understanding how computers work will help you throughout your life and career.

Or if you are really passionate about it and want to be, for example, a blockchain developer, then you have to know a little bit more than others. In that way, you should have a plan or a roadmap. For example, learn JavaScript, learn React, and learn Solidity, and then combine them all together. You’ll get integration of smart contracts in your browser and will be able to mint an NFT collection on your own website.

It was just one of the many examples. Anyway, if you want to learn to program, you need to understand why. As we talked about, you don’t need to be a pro; just knowing the basics and starting to build something is enough.

Just go to a Google page and see what is trending right now. All these new spheres, such as machine learning, Web 3.0, the IoT, and big data, are IT-related and highly innovative. All of them will completely change our world, and you won’t even notice it.

No matter your level of experience, whether you're a web developer or a computer science engineer, junior or senior, there are always some signs of good programmers that set them apart from other developers. Keep reading this article, and you'll know if you’re a great developer!

I tried to explain the unusual characteristics of a truly excellent developer. There won’t be something like “Good programmers love to solve problems." I wanted to talk about some details that not many people are discussing!

1. You Have Right Soft Skills

First of all, every great developer should not only be able to code. It’s also crucial to have specific soft skills that will help you achieve much more. I’m talking about being cooperative, knowing how to talk to others, managing your time, and being able to focus only on one thing. These are the most essential skills that not every developer, every person should have.

You should understand that programming isn’t about coding; it’s about creating something. Usually, you won’t be able to create everything from scratch alone, especially without knowing how to do it. You need to describe the goals of your product, find the right team, and communicate with it. You also need to motivate your co-workers and work on one thing together.

Soft skills also include critical and creative thinking. And as we all know, they are essential for real programming success. You can't solve any difficult problems without them, and you'll eventually stagnate.

By doing so, you’ll definitely achieve what you want and build a great product. So having at least several of these soft skills is amazing. You can’t be a great developer without being a great person!

2. You Can Find Information, Even If Nobody Can

Programmer isn’t a job; it’s a mindset. Always remember this quote. It makes your brain work in a different way. Programming teaches you to think in an algorithmic way. By knowing how to do it, you can accomplish different tasks in the most efficient way possible.

Just imagine a situation. You’ve just learned a sorting algorithm. After understanding it and practicing for a little while, your brain tries to implement it in your usual life. If you needed an hour to sort books on a bookshelf, now you only need 15 minutes. It has increased your productivity and the speed at which you can accomplish specific tasks.

The same thing happens when you want to find something. It can be an answer to your question, a solution to a problem, or anything else. If you know which algorithm to use for this specific task, then you’ll do it faster and better. If you know where to find information and how to do it right, you’ll also accomplish everything faster and better.

To summarize, if you’re a great developer, you’ll definitely find the right information, even if anyone else can’t!

3. You’re Surrounded By Like-Minded People

Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are. That’s also a crucial quote that you should consider remembering in your life. You can’t be a great developer if you’re not surrounded by great developers or at least like-minded people.

Jacque Fresco once said — “The environment shapes the person." I fully agree with this and have experienced it myself. If you don’t know, I’m currently living in Kazakhstan, which is not the best place to build projects and create startups. However, once I started talking with very intelligent guys in these spheres, I started to see some changes.
We started discussing ideas and projects that could reshape the entire future. It gave me a definition of like-minded people. Each of us knows something that nobody else knows, and it’s very important to share this information with each other.
I’m better at UI/UX design; someone else could be better at the back end; someone at marketing. Imagine building a team of professionals and working on something together every day. Isn’t that amazing?

4. You’re Not Afraid To Share The Results

It can be sharing results with friends and relatives, or even sharing them on social media. You can also upload your work to GitHub and share it with others.

Firstly, if you’re doing so, it means that you know that your program works as planned because you definitely won’t publish a script that just doesn’t work. And secondly, you can get a bunch of feedback from other experienced developers.
Many beginners are shy and afraid to share their results because they think that everybody will think that they’re doing something bad. It’s the absolute opposite. If you want to become a great developer, you need to have a lot of feedback. It will point out your weaknesses and explain to you what to do next!

5. You’re Coding On Purpose

Last, but not least, you’re coding on purpose or have some kind of plan. We have all met someone who wants to be a programmer, either because someone told him to or because they have huge salaries. one of the dumbest things that I’ve ever heard.

If you’re a great programmer, you chose this path yourself. not your friends, not your parents. and you’re doing it on purpose. Probably because you want to build something that will revolutionize the world or because you just want to become a millionaire by selling some software.
It doesn’t matter what your goals are, you just need to have them. And if you don’t, then you need to spend most of your time identifying the right one. The right goal will help you achieve everything quicker and focus on the most important things.

You also need to have some sort of roadmap. Nothing comes immediately. You need to figure out which way to go and understand different parts of your journey. If you want to become a senior blockchain developer, then you first need to analyze the whole niche. Then write step-by-step instructions for exactly how you’ll achieve it. For instance, you can first learn Solidity, then find some libraries for your specific task, then build a website if you need to, and so on.

Well better talk about some really unusual extensions that will help you achieve your specific tasks in the most efficient way!

Before working on a new project, you surely need to organize your previous one and make everything structured. A Visual Studio Code extension called VSCode Project Dashboard enables you to organize your projects in any possible way. The next extension in our list is Peacock, which has over 1.9 million downloads; however, many developers still haven’t heard of it before. It simply changes the color of your Visual Studio Code workspace. Ideal for quickly identifying your editor when you have multiple instances of VS Code or use VS Code's Remote features.

5. Truffle

The Web 3.0 sphere and all technologies related to it, such as crypto, NFT, DeFi, and many others, are booming right now. I wrote an article about the importance of Web 3.0 in the future and why you should pay attention to it. And many developers working in this sphere are struggling with writing smart contracts on Solidity, which is a programming language for Ethereum. Truffle for VS Code simplifies how you create, build, debug, and deploy smart contracts on Ethereum and all EVM-compatible blockchains and layer 2 scaling solutions. So if you're a blockchain developer, you surely need it!

6. Remote — SSH

The Remote — SSH extension lets you use any remote machine with an SSH server as your development environment. This can greatly simplify development and troubleshooting in a wide variety of situations. You can either develop on the same operating system you deploy to or use larger, faster, or more specialized hardware than your local machine. Also, quickly swap between different, remote development environments and safely make updates without worrying about impacting your local machine.

Better Comments is a pretty popular extension; however, I still want to add it to this list. As you might guess from the title, it helps you write better comments for your code. If you’re always struggling with default gray comments and lose focus finding the important one, then this extension is right for you. It will make your comments look prettier and will help others understand your code much easier!

10. Random Everything

This extension was previously covered in one of my other lists. It’s definitely for you if you frequently work with databases or simply need some random information for the test, even though I think it’s really cool. Names, numbers, and even email addresses can all be generated at random using Random Everything. So, yeah, it’s pretty cool and essential for everybody!

11. Resource Monitor

One of the latest extensions on the list is Resouce Monitor. There’s nothing so difficult in this extension. It just shows you some information about your system and usage. It can display CPU frequency, usage, memory consumption, and battery percentage remaining within the VSCode status bar.

12. Shades of Purple

Everyone is tired of One Dark Pro, right? Me too. So, there’s probably a better alternative to make your VS Code even prettier. It’s called "shades of purple," and yeah, you guessed right, it’s a purple color scheme for your IDE. However, there are no toxic colors, and it looks pretty nice. I’ve switched to this theme myself and am happy with the results!

DeFi: The Financial System of The Future

The current world is highly competitive, and almost every day something completely new is invented, something that should change this world once and for all. The most important thing for each of you and me is to find these inventions, technologies, or anything else and try to dive into them as quickly as possible. And about one of these technologies, we’ll talk in this article. It’s called DeFi (Decentralized Finances) and is going to revolutionize the whole financial system!

What is DeFi?

DeFi is an abbreviation for "Decentralized Finances." But what does it mean? It’s simply our usual banks, exchanges, and other public institutions built on blockchain. Or in other words, it is a financial system independent of anything, fully decentralized, and ruled by the power of the community. With these advantages, DeFi is literally killing our current financial system.

It’s actually a new step in turning our whole world into a symbiosis with the new Web 3.0 world. Just imagine if everything that you’re currently using was built on blockchain, fully decentralized, and absolutely independent of any outside factors. Firstly, it means absolute freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want and no one will ever be able to ban you or something like that. Because of decentralization, the ability for users to decide for themselves what to do and what not to do becomes a reality. And as I said, DeFi is another step toward a “perfect world”. Now we’ll talk about the exact advantages over the usual financial system and why you have to dive deeper into it.

Why DeFi is Better Than The Usual Financial System?

First of all, as we talked about earlier, it’s decentralized. It’s already the most crucial advantage that can exist. Decentralized means it cannot be robbed; it does not have any departments in New York or something like that. Because of the blockchain, every user of this protocol is becoming a little owner.

It has a much higher level of security. It depends on which cryptocurrency you’re building your DeFi on. For instance, Bitcoin uses the SHA256 encryption algorithm, and it’s really hard to hack and steal someone’s wallet. In fact, there still haven’t been any situations when the wallet has been hacked and stolen. For current computers, it’s almost impossible and will be in the near future as well.

However, the majority of DeFi’s are based on Ethereum or Ethereum-based tokens. So they’re using slightly different technologies and slightly different encryption algorithms but have the same level of security and possibility.

It’s also better because it uses crypto-tokens instead of our usual dollars. You can keep your money in almost any cryptocurrency that you want, and use stable coins if you want to have a connection to a dollar.

The cool thing is that you can stake your tokens and get an APY (Annual percentage yield), which works the same way as in the usual banks. However, instead of depositing your money, you’re staking your crypto. And by the end of the year, you’ll have, for example. +12% in your crypto and probably this token will grow. Or will go down, it’s a risky game :)

DeFi is powered by the community. As we talked about earlier, if you have at least several of this DeFi’s tokens, you’re becoming a small owner and can decide and vote for some changes in this project. So you want to earn some extra cash. That’s the right place to start. I’ve analyzed the whole industry of passive income and applied some of these methods myself. So you can be sure that each of them is a working method.

If you don’t know what passive income means, it’s simply something that makes you money while you sleep. In other words, this is not an active job from 9 to 5.

To create passive income, you first need to put something in, and then it will generate some income. For instance, to start earning from Medium, you first need to write several articles. But we’ll talk a little bit later about it!

I know how all of you guys are tired of hearing the same thing over and over. I tried to explain only the ones that are unique or the ones that really work. I hope you’ll love it!

Liquidity Pools

By enabling users to deposit their digital assets into a pool and trade the pool tokens on the DEX (Decentralized Exchanges), liquidity pools provide the liquidity required for them to run.

In other words, you can give some of your crypto coins to the pool and get a percentage of them over time. It’s like a deposit in a bank. However, liquidity pools are usually offering much higher rates, and they’re working on blockchain .

It can also be better because you’re investing in crypto at the same time. You’re getting some percentage in crypto , and if it grows, you’ll also get money from it. But *crypto * is a highly volatile sphere, and you should consider these risks before investing in some liquidity pool.

The most important DEX right now is Uniswap . It’s actually one of the first ones on the market and works on Ethereum . There are also many others, such as PanckakeSwap , Compound , and so on.

Selling Templates

If you’re good at something, there are always many ways to monetize it. For example, selling a digital product in this industry or specifically through partnerships.

I’m a UI/UX designer, and it’s a great opportunity for me to turn my designs into templates that people can use. I’m selling these templates on Gumroad, and you can sell them there as well.

On my profile, you can see several digital products, such as Figma templates for marketing agencies, a personal blog, and an online store. All of them are priced between $10–$15 which is pretty low for such products.

But you should understand that this template can be purchased a thousand times. It also will help many other people in this sphere to accomplish their tasks much quicker

You can also sell something like Notion templates. If you don’t know, Notion is a unique tool that can help everyone. It can be your personal database or a dashboard for your projects. Anyway, you can always try to create something yourself and then sell it!

You can earn an infinite amount of money from it. I’ve sold several templates in total for $200, which is not so ridiculous. You can have much more sales, straight up to $100,000 a month.

Content Creation

This is probably not as unique as it could be, but I still want to tell you about it. Content creation is booming right now, and failing to notice it is ridiculous.

There are tons of social media platforms and places where you can share some of your thoughts and monetize them. Medium *is a great example; you can write about whatever you want and see how people react to it. I’m doing it myself, and I earn around *$400 each month absolutely passively!

If you don’t like writing, you can always upload videos on YouTube. Or make TikToks about something cool and unique. You can also start doing podcasts. It doesn’t matter which platform you want to grow; there are a bunch of ways to monetize it.

My personal advice for you is not to start on everything at the same time. I’ve started on **Medium **and now want to grow on other platforms as well. You should do the same thing too!

Faceless YouTube Channel

Actually, it’s another type of content creation. However, you won’t need to show your face, and you do even need to know something to start creating. By using current technologies, you can automate the whole process of creating YouTube videos and earn money from them absolutely passively.

First of all, you need to choose a niche. Then you’ll need a script for your video. You can write it yourself or use something like Rytr or Jarvis. These are the most popular AI services for writing, and you can use them to have them write for you.

After you have a script for the video, you’ll need to add some voiceover. Again, you can do it yourself or use some service, such as Murf. It will read your script like a real person, not a robot. It's an excellent option if you don't have a good microphone or simply don't want to use your own voice.

And the final step is to have the video itself. You can go to Pexels and check for free stock videos that you can use as a background. However, there’s also a way to automate by using AI. It’s called Pictory.ai and it simply adds a collage of different videos related to your topic and makes it more professional.

You can also add subtitles and many other cool features. It is important to mention that even if you want to automate everything, you should check manually at each step. Sometimes you will need to rewrite several sentences or change the background video.

In a nutshell, creating a faceless YouTube account and consistently uploading videos is a great way to earn extra money, especially since you can automate the entire process and make it completely passive.

Lo-Fi Beats

We all know what lo-fi beats are. If not, then it’s just chill and calm music without any words. People usually listen to it to relax and concentrate better. Many developers use it too because it’s much cooler to work with music on.

This is probably one of my favorites and has almost unlimited potential. As we already know, there are thousands of services that offer automation or something AI-related.

By using some of these services, you can create your own lo-fi beats from literally nothing. I personally have used a tool called Avia which has free access and up to three downloads of your music.

You can try it and see how it works. It can produce not only lo-fi beats but also some more complex music genres. Later, you can sell it on different music marketplaces or even upload it to Spotify .

It doesn’t matter what you’ll do with these music files later; you can make some money from them anyway.
