      <title>On BCG Vaccine Defense against COVID-19: A Review.</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;Spatial confinement is a desirable successful strategy to trap sulfur within its porous host and has been widely applied in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, physical confinement alone is currently not enough to reduce the lithium polysulfide (Li2Sn, 4 ≤ n ≤ 8, LIPSs) shuttle effect with sluggish LIPS-dissolving kinetics. In this work, we have integrated spatial confinement with a polar catalyst, and designed a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected, Co decorated and N doped porous carbon nanofiber (Co/N-PCNF) network. This Co/N-PCNF film serves as a freestanding host for sulfur trapping, which could effectively facilitate the infiltration of electrolyte and electron transport. In addition, the polar Co species possess strong chemisorption with LIPSs, catalyzing their reaction kinetics as well. As a result of this rational design and integration, the Co/N-PCNF@S cathode with a sulfur loading of 2 mg cm-2 exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 878 mA h g-1 at 1C, and maintains a discharge capacity of 728 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles. Even with high sulfur loading of 9.33 mg cm-2, the cathode still keeps a stable areal capacity of 7.16 mA h cm-2 at 0.2C after 100 cycles, which is much higher than the current areal capacity (4 mA h cm-2) of commercialized lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This rational design may provide a new approach for future development of high-density Li-S batteries with high sulfur loading.Modern polymeric hydrogels use reversible bonds to mimic biological functionalities. However, true biological materials benefit from several supramolecular elements and deliver multiple functions at the same time. To approach similar creation and control of multiple different functional elements in a synthetic soft material, we develop a model dual-network hydrogel in which multiple energy dissipating modes are formed by metal-ligand coordination and regulated by their association thermodynamics. This idea is realized by using linear and tetra-arm poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) precursors with complementary reactive end groups. The former also carries terpyridine ligands on both ends, which form metallo-supramolecular bonds upon addition of metal ions. Multiple relaxation modes are provided by a combination of different metal ions. The timescale and amplitude of energy dissipating elements are characterized by oscillatory shear deformation. These studies suggest that the composition of metal ions controls the contribution of the corresponding relaxation modes in a linear fashion. A molecular-level confirmation is provided by following the UV-vis absorbance of the linear precursor in combination with mixtures of metal ions, accompanied by a theoretical study on the kinetics of the reversible association process. selleck chemicals llc These results show that the linearity of the aforementioned dependence holds for such systems in which the utilized combination of metal ions and ligands exclusively form stable bis-complexes. Here, a simple and fast nucleic acid-based diagnostic tool to directly detect dengue viruses in whole blood is demonstrated using a microbead-assisted direct sample preparation buffer (MB-buffer) and isothermal amplification (loop-mediated isothermal amplification, LAMP). To maximize the performance of the sample preparation process in the microfluidic chip platform, the chemical composition of the sample preparation buffer is simplified and combined with physical tools (heating and bead beating). The entire serial processes consisted of only (1) sample (whole blood) loading, (2) stirring for 90 s, (3) heating at 70 °C for 10 min, and (4) LAMP amplification in the simply designed microfluidic chip cartridge. A single syringe was utilized for sample loading and microfluidic solution transfer. Consequently, dengue viruses were qualitatively detected and discriminated with high sensitivity (LOD 102 PFU per 200 μL of whole blood) in less than 1 hour without the use of any sophisticated system.The effect of sulfated polysaccharides on the digestion of dietary DNA by pepsin was studied using in vitro simulated gastric juice. The results showed that fucoidan (FUC), dextran sulfate (DS) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) could inhibit the digestion of DNA in a dose-dependent manner. Polysaccharides with high sulfate group content have stronger inhibition ability. Fluorescence spectroscopy results showed that polysaccharides could bind to pepsin, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that polysaccharides can interact with DNA, which not only is the main reason that polysaccharides inhibit the digestion of DNA by pepsin but also causes the digestion of DNA by DNase II to be inhibited. The finding suggests that the digestion of DNA should be reevaluated when eating foods rich in sulfated polysaccharides. This study enriched the known pharmacological properties of sulfated polysaccharides as pepsin inhibitors and provided inspiration for the use of sulfated polysaccharides as oligonucleotide drug delivery carriers.OBJECTIVES Our aim is to evaluate the safety, efficacy, predictability, and clinical outcome of femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) procedures performed on the day of the initial consultation relative to procedures performed at subsequent visits. METHODS A retrospective cohort study design was used. The study group included patients with myopia of different severities who were treated with FS-LASIK in 2013 through 2014 in an optical outpatient clinic of a large private medical service. Inclusion criteria were at least 18 years of age, a stable refraction for 12 months, no history of autoimmune disease, ocular surgery, or eye disease, and complete medical records. Background, clinical, and outcome data were collected from the patient files. RESULTS Femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis was performed in 80 patients (160 eyes) at the first visit and 361 patients (719 eyes) at a subsequent visit. Taking metamerism phenomenon into account, spectra clustering is performed within the class obtained from color appearance attributes clustering. The CIE-Rf of 1202 light sources are calculated and analyzed by taking the Large Set, OCSS and CIE color evaluation sample set (CIE CESS-99) as TCSS. Through analyzing CIE-Rf, the performance of the OCSS is further investigated. The results show that the clustering analysis method developed in this paper can be well used in selecting test color samples, and the obtained OCSS can represent Large Set well and be better used for color fidelity metrics of light sources.We report on the excitation and polarization preserved propagation of a very large effective-area (Aeff ∼ 2240 μm2) higher-order-mode in an optical fiber. A laser signal operating in the 1 μm wavelength region is transported in a Bessel-like LP0,4 mode over a 10 m long section of the polarization-maintaining higher-order-mode fiber. We observe that the light propagates through the fiber with &amp;gt;10 dB polarization-extinction-ratio as the fiber is coiled into circular loops of 40 cm diameter.We present an on-chip, widefield fluorescence microscope, which consists of a diffuser placed a few millimeters away from a traditional image sensor. The diffuser replaces the optics of a microscope, resulting in a compact and easy-to-assemble system with a practical working distance of over 1.5 mm. Furthermore, the diffuser encodes volumetric information, enabling refocusability in post-processing and three-dimensional (3D) imaging of sparse samples from a single acquisition. Reconstruction of images from the raw data requires a precise model of the system, so we introduce a practical calibration scheme and a physics-based forward model to efficiently account for the spatially-varying point spread function (PSF). To improve performance in low-light, we propose a random microlens diffuser, which consists of many small lenslets randomly placed on the mask surface and yields PSFs that are robust to noise. We build an experimental prototype and demonstrate our system on both planar and 3D samples.Properly designed black phosphorus (BP) ribbons exhibit extreme anisotropic properties, which can be used to fabricate a high-efficiency transmitter or reflector depending on the linear polarization of excitation. In this study, we design a highly efficient and broad-angle polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on extremely anisotropic BP ribbons around the mid-infrared frequency region with an ultra-thin structure, and study its performance by using transfer matrix calculation and finite element simulation. In the broad frequency range of 80.4 terahertz - 85.0 terahertz (THz) and an wide angle range of more than 50°, the reflectivity and transmissivity of the designed PBS are both larger than 80% and the polarization extinction ratios are higher than 25.50 dB for s-polarization light and 20.40 dB for p- polarization light, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of incident angle and device parameters on the behavior of the proposed PBS is examined. Finally, we show that the operation frequency of this PBS can be tuned by the electron concentration of BP, which can facilitate some practical applications such as tunable polarization splitters or filters, and mid-infrared sensors.A multi-scale direct writing method for metal microstructures is proposed and demonstrated. In this study, metal structures were created in a gelatin matrix containing silver nitrate by photoreduction using a 405-nm blue laser. The influence of concentrations of materials in the sample solution was evaluated by measuring the conductivity of the fabricated microstructures. The fabrication line width could be controlled by changing the laser scanning speed. A network structure was also observed, which possibly helps in increasing the microstructure's conductivity. Finally, we demonstrated multi-scale drawing by using objective lenses with different numerical apertures. Our method can result in new possibilities for conductive metal direct writing.A photonics-based anti-chromatic dispersion transmission scheme for multi-band linearly frequency modulated (LFM) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the central station (CS), the key component is an integrated dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulator, of which the up-arm and down-arm are driven by a microwave reference signal and an intermediate-frequency (IF) LFM signal respectively. By properly adjusting the DP-QPSK modulator, optical frequency comb (OFC) and frequency shift lightwave are generated. After polarization coupling and remote transmission, the orthogonal-polarization optical signals are introduced into balanced photodetector for heterodyne detection. An analytical model is derived to specify the tunable spectral features, including the band gap and resonant frequencies. Both the measured and calculated results show distinct red shifts of passband and the resonant minima (or maxima), well confirming theoretical predictions. The purpose of this study was to validate the performance of Corona-Score in a cohort of Pakistani patients pursuing care for suspected infection. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;After seeking institution's ethical committee exemption, results of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin, absolute lymphocyte and neutrophil counts, chest x-ray findings and demographics of suspected COVID-19 cases with respiratory symptoms were recouped from electronic medical record. The pre-validated score as proposed by Kurstjens S et al., was calculated. The subjects were divided into SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative on the basis of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) findings. Median and interquartile range (IQR) was calculated for the score in the two groups and the difference was assessed using the independent sample median test. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis limited availability of PCR testing. &lt;br&gt;

Based on initial estimates of health and economic costs, social distancing policies were justified, but these estimates now seem too high because of learning by doing. Significant differences in mortality rates across US states and countries can be explained by population density, climate, exposure, and policy. Regions that were able to contain the disease early have seen fewer deaths and lower economic losses. Some developing countries initially imposed drastic, costly measures, perhaps motivated by political economy. We also find that there has been underinvestment in prevention and mitigation that could have reduced the cost of adaptation and suggest that there is a lesson for climate change policies.Rapid urbanisation of Afghan cities without proper construction regulation has exposed their population to a high risk of damage from disasters such as earthquakes. With the growing construction of local non-engineered buildings and an existing level of hazard of 0.8 g, a high risk of casualties and building damage threatens Kabul in the event of a disaster. This study reports and evaluates a recent retrofitting project in Kabul City by 'Project for City Resilience', carried out under the supervision of the United Nation Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) for 48 retrofitted sun-dried clay brick masonry buildings in Kabul. The project was executed by local masons and welders who were trained as a part of the project, and the main tasks included installation of an additional steel frame, additional reinforced concrete foundation ring, ceiling replacement and wall strengthening (via mesh and plaster). After a visual assessment of retrofitted buildings considering the original retrofitting design and actual work done, a vulnerability index for retrofitted buildings was developed based on a behaviour modifier factor, which was assigned to each retrofitting activity using a combination of values and a proportion of scores for each retrofitting activity. click here The results indicate that training of local masons and welders to undertake retrofitting activities could decrease the damage ratio by 15% - 20% for peak ground acceleration values of 0.3 g and higher. The methods mentioned in this study can be used to make existing sun-dried clay brick masonry buildings sufficiently resistant to earthquakes of moderate-to-severe intensity.There are calls for better empirical models to inform climate change adaptation in smallholder agriculture. Hitherto adaptation studies have failed to comprehensively integrate non-cognitive behavioural factors (e.g. psychological capital), and there is also no common framework for measuring non-cognitive abilities of smallholder farmers. Hence, this study is the first attempt to assess how psychological capital affects climate change adaptation amongst smallholder farmers. The study estimated the multivariate probit regression model using data collected from 328 smallholder farmers in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. The results show an association between some psychological capital indicators and smallholder adaptation decisions. Social networks, having multiple farming objectives, access to credit and the type of farmer (irrigators vs. non-irrigators) were also significant in determining smallholders' adaptation decisions. In conclusion, the study recommends the need for practical ways for enhancing smallholders' endowment with key non-cognitive abilities. There is also a need for researchers to develop a comprehensive framework for assessing non-cognitive factors critical for climate change adaptation. This will improve the use of positive psychology theories to advance the literature on climate change adaptation. Support should also be provided to communities facing higher risks of climate change adaptation. More focus should also be given to improve smallholder farmers' ability to adapt, including access to affordable credit. The role of social networks in information sharing remains critical, and hence their promotion should be prioritised. The findings on multiple objectives in farming were unique to climate change adaptation research, and hence the indicator should be considered in future similar studies.Many African countries face escalating challenges of increasing disaster risk and anticipated impacts of climate change. Although disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) are tightly linked and comprising virtually identical practices in vulnerable countries in Southern Africa, research has identified parallel governance structures across the region. This study applied comparative case study research, based on 27 semi-structured interviews, to investigate the reasons for and effects of such parallel structures for DRR and CCA in Botswana, Mozambique, the Seychelles, Tanzania and Zambia. It revealed overwhelmingly negative effects in terms of unclear mandates and leadership, uncoordinated efforts, duplication of efforts, suboptimal use of resources and competition over resources and control.       <description>&lt;p&gt;Perineural anaesthesia is an essential part of lameness investigation in horses. Painful reactions to injections imply a high risk of accidents for veterinarians. To evaluate the efficacy of two topical anaesthetic creams on desensitization of the skin at two perineural injection sites and to evaluate the effects these formulations may have on pain perception distally to the application sites. Randomized, blind, prospective study. 14 healthy horses were randomly divided in two groups of 7 horses each, one treated with EMLA and one with PLIAGLIS preparations. The mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) was recorded via pressure algometer at the baseline and one hour after application (T1) on palmar and palmar digital nerve blocks sites. Skin sensation was also assessed on the distal limb, recording MNT on the coronary band and on both bulbs of the heels. Data were compared with a 3-way ANOVA statistical analyses. No significant difference was encountered in the MNT values between baseline records and records at T1 at the control sites. A significant difference of MNT values was detected between the two time points in the treated limbs. The significant sources of variation in our study were the time and the presence of anaesthetic cream. The type of treatment did not determine any differences. Furthermore, no significant difference of MNT values at sites distal to treatment was recorded between the two time points, both in the treated limb and control limbs. Both formulations are effective to obtain superficial skin desensitization.Equine salmonellosis is caused by several Salmonella serotypes, including Salmonella Newport, which cause enterocolitis and diarrhea. Treatment usually includes the administration of antibiotics. However, since multidrug-resistant Salmonella is commonly detected, alternative options to control the pathogen are needed. One of these options is the use of specific egg yolk antibodies (IgY) for passive immunotherapy. Thus, the aim of our work was to produce IgY antibodies against an equine S. Bcl-2 pathway Newport strain and assess their in vitro inhibitory activity. To this end, laying hens were immunized with an inactivated S. Newport strain by using either Freund's or Montanide adjuvant and egg yolk extracts were obtained. The levels of specific IgY antibodies against Salmonella in sera and egg extracts were determined by dot-blot and microagglutination. Besides, the IgY extracts were characterized by total protein analysis, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, and inhibition of bacterial motility. IgY extracts showed high purity (87.7 to 91.8 %), high microagglutination titers, and the ability to inhibit the motility of the bacterium. The results using Montanide were similar to those using the traditional Freund's adjuvant. Thus, Montanide may also be a good adjuvant to produce IgY. IgY-technology represents a potential tool for the control of salmonellosis in horses.Dwarfism is a skeletal disorder that causes abnormal growth. In Miniature horses, dwarfism can occur as chondrodysplastic dwarfism, an autosomal recessive disorder associated with five mutations (D1, D2, D3*, D4 and c.6465A &amp;gt; T variant) in the aggrecan (ACAN) gene. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of aggrecan (at the gene and protein level) and specific cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) in the articular cartilage of Miniature horses with chondrodysplastic dwarfism (D4/c.6465A &amp;gt; T genotype). Metatarsal bone samples from eight dwarf Miniature horses were collected for histopathological analysis, and articular cartilage was collected to detect and quantify aggrecan levels through Western blotting and determine the relative expression levels of ACAN, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α through qPCR. All affected animals presented chondrodysplasia-like lesions with disorganization of the chondrocyte layers and reduced the amount of an extracellular matrix. No significant difference in aggrecan expression levels in uncleaved samples from the dwarf and control groups (composed of phenotypically normal animals of similar age and breed (P = .7143)) was found using Western blotting. qPCR revealed that ACAN gene expression was higher in the affected animals than in normal animals (P = .0119). No significant difference in cytokine levels was detected between the groups. Mutant aggrecan may interfere with normal cellular function, leading to chondrodysplasia and the observed phenotypic findings.This case series discusses the clinical presentation, ultrasonographic findings, treatment, and outcome of 5 horses with superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) lesions within the carpal canal. The horses' ages ranged from 11-28 years, and presented with an acute, unilateral forelimb lameness which worsened following proximal limb flexion. The presence of a lesion within the SDFT of the carpal canal was accompanied by a mild swelling of the palmar carpal region in most cases. Diagnostic anesthesia of the ulnar nerve, when performed, abolished the lameness. Ultrasound evaluation revealed an increased cross-sectional area (CSA) of the superficial digital flexor tendon compared to the contralateral, sound limb and a loss of tendon fiber architecture within the palmar aspect of the affected tendon, most readily identifiable upon longitudinal ultrasound images. Three out of the five horses returned to their previous level of performance, and two were euthanized. A back at the knee carpal region conformation was associated with a poorer prognosis in these cases. An intratendinous fibroma was identified on histopathological analysis of one-horse following euthanazia, which has been recorded in a complementary short communication.Reliable and simple tests are constantly being sought to enable the quick detection of acute kidney injury in humans and animals. The aim of the study was to establish the value of the renal resistive index (RRI) in intrarenal arteries in horses with clinical AKI and compare it to that of healthy horses. The second goal was to determine whether potentially nephrotoxic agents can influence RRI. The kidney ultrasonography examination was performed in 30 healthy horses, 11 horses with AKI and 30 horses at risk for AKI (10 colic horses, 10 horses receiving gentamicin and 10 horses receiving NSAIDs). RRI values were measured using pulsed-wave Doppler. Differences in RRI between groups were observed only in the right kidney. Horses with AKI had significantly higher RRI values compared to healthy horses.
