Hey folks!

Just a quick announcement to let y'all know that Jason McDonald (@codemouse92) and I recently started up a podcast about job searching called On The Board.

In it, we interview folks who have successfully found jobs (mostly in tech) over the past year or two. We generally ask them about their experience of being out of work, what insights they learned while applying to different places, and what advice they have for current job seekers. Notably, we interview a variety of folks who hold different positions... we're several episodes in now and have spoken with Developers, HR Representatives, Product Managers, Community Managers, and Security Advisors, all of whom have unique stories to tell and insights to share.

Our shows are typically ~30 minutes and can be watched in video form on YouTube or listened to on Spotify. Also, you can find us here on LinkedIn — we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd give us a follow!

Been a good bit since I've shared music with you all, and I've missed it! So, here I am, coming back at ya with a fresh Music Monday. This one is all about the summer... I wanna hear y'all's favorite summertime tunes whatever that might mean to you. Could be songs with lyrics about the summer, or maybe it's just music that reminds you of summer in some way. No Longer DEV's Community Manager, But Still Got Lotsa Love For Y'all! 💚

Heyo folks! 👋

It's been about a month since I was let go from DEV (see the post here) and I wanted to return to the community to give a few quick updates about myself and how I'm feeling:

a. First off, I'm getting on just fine! Been busy looking for new opportunities and am generally feeling optimistic. I'm continuously honing my LinkedIn, resume, and portfolio website all while keeping the job applications flowing. At the same time, I'd been working at DEV for 5.5 years straight, and while I had vacations, I was feeling a little more burnt out than I realized... so, I've also just been trying to chill out and enjoy a little bit of this downtime between jobs. On the whole, it's been a good mental reset, and I'm confident something will come along soon enough! 🙂

b. I've got nothing but love for the Forem organization, its founders, and the DEV Community. Same thing goes for all current & past Forem employees (or former Foremers as I like to call'em), plus the many mods whom I had the pleasure of working particularly closely with! So many cool folks have contributed their time, hearts, and minds to this community... I feel lucky to count myself among this crew. 💚

c. I'm sure this ain't the last you'll see of me on DEV, though I am taking a bit of a break and probs won't be a daily visitor — hey, I mean, I'm not a dev. Still, I've forged a lotta friendships here in this community and believe it to be a special place on the web. Because of DEV, I know so many kind, interesting folks (mostly devs! 😄) from all over the world... so big thank you to everybody I've had thoughtful interactions with here – it's really nice to have gotten to know you all. I absolutely wanna keep in touch, so please don't hesitate to connect with me... or if you have any opportunities that you think my professional background would be well-suited for, please send'em my way! 🙌

Thanks to everybody who has reached out to me during this transitional period! Whether you've suggested a job opportunity to me, given me a recommendation (or would like to give me one via LinkedIn 😉😉), or simply sent me a supportive message, it all means a heckuva lot to me.

We're constantly sharing our experiences and learning together in public, so it feels natural to open up a space for mentors and potential mentees to meet & mingle, discuss what they're offering or hoping to get from mentorship, and plan their next steps.

If you're a mentor and plan on using this thread to talk about your experience and what you can provide mentorship-wise, you've come to the right place. Also, thank you... we appreciate you offering to help others in our community!

NOTE: If you're offering a paid-for service, we ask that you please be upfront about that in your message.

We recommend sharing a message about yourself that includes the following:

Your experience as a developer and as a mentor. If it's your first time offering mentorship, that's okay; please just be honest.
What you're able to offer. For example: share your preferred method of communication and how much estimated time you can provide on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
Why you're doing this. Perhaps you remember being a beginner and would like to help someone out. Maybe you run a supportive Discord channel. Or, maybe it's part of your career in DevRel.
How folks can connect with you. You could provide contact details, point to your website, link to your socials/Discord channel/etc. — just give folks a way to get in touch.

Your current experience level as a developer. If you're just beginning and/or in early learning stages, that's absolutely okay!
What your personal goals are. These can be long-term and aspirational, e.g. I want to become a professional web developer. They can also be more short-term and specific, e.g. I want to learn best practices for naming models in Ruby.
What your personal commitment looks like. Can you meet up multiple times a week, once a week, once a month? Are you full-time job searching or currently working somewhere else? How much time do you expect to spend on this?

Story time, y'all! Our theme this week is storytelling and there are many ways to take this one. There are songs that tell amazing stories, but also songs with amazing stories behind them (think about the behind-the-scenes making of a song...) — both are welcome in this thread. And why stop there? If you'd like to highlight a specific artist/album/music video that is particularly good at storytelling — go for it! Beyond the art itself, we also have our own personal stories that are tied to music... what song were you listening to when you had your first kiss? What reminds you of your teenage years? What was your first concert? I'd love to hear any stories you have that are tied to music. And yet another angle, there's a whole cottage industry of podcasters out there covering music history — digging into the stories and lore of our musical heroes. Music Monday — What are you listening to? (Best Interpolation Edition)

Interpolation! That's a word you don't hear every day... According to Wikipedia:

In popular music, interpolation (also called a replayed sample) refers to using a melody—or portions of a melody (often with modified lyrics)—from a previously recorded song but re-recording the melody instead of directly sampling it. Interpolation is often used when the artist or label who owns the recording of the music declines to license the sample, or if licensing the piece of music is considered too costly.

If you're like me, you're probs thinking what?! No sampling?! Don't worry, I'm not gonna be a stickler about it... as far as I'm concerned samples are allowed here. I'm just looking for music that references other pre-existing music in some way that is fresh or interesting. It can be an interpolation, a sample... even a cover or an answer song will do! And for all those that are struggling to think up interpolations, I got a list for ya here. Of course, feel free to color outside the lines and suggest any music you've been into recently.
